I was 24 before I ever got to go to a Zoo, that being the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas.
I thought it was the coolest thing to see so much different wildlife that I had previously only seen in books or on television.
Since then, I've been to a good forty or fifty zoos, and since I live just fourteen miles from one of the world's greatest zoos, I maintain an annual pass so that I can just zip in anytime I want to see something specific, like babies or special events, or just to stroll around in order not to have to sit in the car on the freeway during rush hour traffic.
Just as the Zoo helps me save gas and relax, many of the animals in the Zoo tend to help each out, too, just as these two were doing:

This week's blog posts (they will open in a new window)
Hey, June - I can certainly agree with you on that one. If you buy tickets online, they are $35 for adult and $26 for children. Adult is defined as 12 or older. LOL When one considers that a year membership is $75 for adults and $28 for children, it's well worth getting an annual pass if one lives here. Considering that the zoo is also an international arboretum, it's well worth going every three months to see animals mating, babies, flowers, etc.
Hey, Pat - When you come to San Diego in November for the 2009 NAR Convention, well, you can stop in at the Zoo, too!
Hey, Cindy - I went to the National Zoo back in 1984. It's about time for me to make another trip to D.C./Baltimore/Arlington.
Hey, Eric - Where would be we without our staff? LOL
Hey, Chanda - Nope. That's his own hair. I think he is a lion-tailed macaque if I remember correctly.
Hey, Judy - Considering how often I stand in front of the monkey exhibits and watch them, they probably are beginning to think that I'm a monkey, too.
That is a great picture. Everytime I see one of these wordless blogs I keep thinking I need to spend more time out and about with my camera. Just doesnt seem to be enough time in the day right now.
I think you would like our zoo....you would find these guys on Monkey Island...come see the Penguins and duck your way thru the aviary....hurry before the snow flies...free room and board at Hotel Hanson !
Hey, Robert - Remember what my wise old grandmother told me: "You always have time for those things you do first."
Hey, John - The San Diego Zoo just completed a $45 million expansion, which they started planning for three years ago, just as the real estate market and the economy were at their peak. Interestingly, as one of the guys told me when they solicited my money, the Zoo was founded after World War I when things were bad, undertook a major expansion after World War II when things were bad, undertook major renovations in the late 1970s when things were bad, did some more major renovations in the late 1980s when things were really bad here in San Diego, so it's only logical that with the current economic conditions, they undertake a $45 million expansion. I liked his logic, so I contributed.
Hey, Sally and David - I know that I'd like your Zoo. I've already been there on a virtual tour.

Zoos are amazing. I think the admissions should be lower so that many more can take advantage of the amazing things that are there to be seen!!
