Top Five Kitchen Design Trends in New Homes

What Should YOUR North Carolina Home Include?

Sometimes trends are just, well, trendy.  But other times, new features and looks make perfect sense, and make an already attractive new home even better.  Take a look through these top trends, and put together your new home checklist!

New Home Trends - Raleigh NC New Homes - Custom Home Builders North Carolina1.   Open Kitchens, but not TOO Open!

Homebuyers want kitchens that have visibility to living spaces, but not ones that bare it all.  A half wall with an eating or serving bar is the perfect solution.

Cooking spaces are somewhat out of sight, but the cook can take part in conversations and interact with guests easily.

Busy family times can be spent together in these comfortable kitchen designs.

2.  Contrasting Kitchen Cabinetry

It's become attractively trendy to include multiple finishes and styles of cabinetry in the Kitchen.  The light and dark finishes contrast and draw the eye.

Contrasting pieces can be used for decorative range hoods, islands, even eating bar areas.

Usually the island, if contrasting, will be a darker finish, but not always.

A built in seating area near the kitchen can maximize space and storage.

Built in seats are flush against the wall, which allows more open space, and also reduces the need to clean under and around pesky chair legs.

Banquettes can be large or small, and storage can be built into the bench areas.

4.  Oversized Islands

An oversized island can be a wonderful feature of a larger kitchen.  Oversized islands offer extra cabinetry for storage, and can be designed in a myriad of ways.

- Large seating area on one side, raised or same height

- Unique kitchen desk area

- Separate range top and cooking center

- Preparation area with vegetable sink

Accents like display shelves, corbels, and "furniture" posts can also be added.

This kitchen features Capistrano Cherry cabinetry by Timberlake.

As focus moves back from oversized mansions to smaller, more manageable (and affordable) homes, the emphasis is definitely on storage solutions.

Bookcases and storage systems can be incorporated into every room of the home, including the kitchen.

One under-used area is actually underneath the serving bar or eating bar area.  With just a small extension of the existing space, a multitude of storage is added.

Finish the look by inserting neutral or colorful storage bins, neatly labeled for easy clutter solutions.

Lots of great ideas.  The mixed finishes are nice, but could look dated pretty quickly.  Islands are always very functional and create a kitchen that two people can work in for those families with multiple chefs. Love the pictures.

Penny - Thanks for sharing the list.  By far, contrasting cabinetry finishes is my least favorite from a personal point of view.  I came across this last week for the first time at a showing.  By the way how did you get your Twitter to appear on your blog?  All the best.

Penny:  Oversized islands, VERY open kitchens, and built-in seating have been popular here in DFW for years.  Contrasting cabinet colors... would not fly at all.  Not at all.  I have not seen the desk as part of the oversized island idea before.  I think that would be a winner for many.  Thanks for sharing...

Hi Penny,  We are just starting to look at a kitchen redo.  I like the open kitchen for a relaxed living style.

Barbara - The mixed finishes seem to be one of those "love it or hate it" features!

Kenneth - We're seeing mixed finishes most often in the $400K plus market, but can certainly incorporate them in other price points if desired.  The color combinations can really vary, and can affect the appeal.

Karen - The built in desk is a neat idea!

Bill - "open" is a word we hear over and over....

Contrasting cabinetry is also my least favorite.  I also don't think I would like my desk area in the center of the kitchen built into the island. Of course, this is my personal opinion.

Great pictures!

Thanks for the photos and ideas - we need to do an update to our kitchen in Arizona sometime in the future - as a Realtor I get to see "Many" kitchens and when I get closer to actually revitalizing mine I want to start taking photos of things I like - I have been impressed with the use of recycled glass for back splash accents.  But I have to agree with some of the others - I would never do mixed cabinets - Cheers from Sunriver, Oregon and Tempe, Arizona

Contrasting Cabinetry is something my husband wanted to do, but I said uh-uh.  But, this may be the way to go in renovationg are Kitchen this summer. I do not like the desk in the Kitche3n though.  I want to keep the cabinets 1980's ranch what do you think.

Irene - the desk idea is pretty unique, could also use the "lower" countertop as a more unique seating area!

Gloria - taking photos is a great idea.  It really helps when our clients bring photos of the ideas they have in mind.  We have a much better idea what to suggest when we can "see" what you're looking for!

Robbin - contrasting cabinetry seems to be a "love it or hate it" proposition!  A desk in the kitchen can be a great idea, but more universally appealing when it's set in the wall instead.

Judy - thanks for your comment here!

I read your "Active Rain"  blog about kitchen trends and just wanted to comment that I love the mixed finish look for kitchen cabinetry.  I have seen it in many upscale homes, especially in coastal areas, and believe there will be alot more in the coming years. It evokes the feeling of a "family home evolved over years" instead of the "new construction" look.
