A Community Powered Reading List - My Facebook Neighbors Speak

The following doesn't surprise me anymore. I've come to expect it. The reading list contained in the conversation below was generated in less than 30 minutes on Facebook. What's more, I expect that it might grow a bit from here. I think it illustrates the beauty of YEO. Because these relationships are real, I've come to trust these people that some of my "real life" friends affectionately call "faux friends." I'd strongly disagree.

I asked a simple question and the community was quick to respond. They spoke and I listened. I now have four of their recommendations in my iPhone Kindle app. And I'm looking forward to reading their suggestions!

The Question: I'd love to do some reading (books) while on vacation next week. Any suggestions?

Sarah Nichols at 9:15am June 18: Well Jeff, I would suggest some classic novels but you just wrote that you don't read novels. Anyway, My favorite novels are: "The Good Earth' by Pearl S. Buck, 'Memoirs of a Geisha', all the Harry Potter books (You won't be able to put those down) - that should occupy you for a while if you opt to read a few fun novels.

Sarah Nichols at 9:20am June 18: Memoirs Of A Geisha is actually a very riveting novel that - while it glorifies the idea of being a geisha - also shows the pain, struggles, and mental anguish that these girls go through when they are torn from their families and thrust (and sold) into this life that they didn't choose.

I love my iPhone Kindle app too. I third the Kite Runner and his second book is incredible too.

Jeff- Funny I saw this come up on FB this morning but I didn't have any suggestions unfortunately... I do most of my reading here and on the web as of late....lol

Rarely get a chance to read anything else. Good luck getting a chance to read. What a luxury these days huh? Just sayin.... :-)

Jeff, I would be happy to send you my book but it is also on Kindle.

Jeff we must be kindred spirits. I never leave home without my laptop and a book. Never! Even when going to work. One never knows when situational issues control the schedule freeing up moments for the great joy of reading.

Melina... the Kindle app on the iPhone has changed my reading habits for the better. Because I have it with me at all times, I find myself reading more than I ever have. I'm loving it.

Keep the book an easy read; Kurt Vonnegut's "Slapstick" or more out there books like "Midnight thoughts on listening to Maulers ninth symphony."

Faux friends? Oh my! Doesn't faux mean fake/imitation? Tell your buddy I said, "Don't think so, champ!"

Personally ... I cherish each and every friend, be it here or FB or Twitter or in 'real life' if that's what you want to call it. :)

I've just started The Great Santini by Pat Conroy. It's the last one on my Conroy list. BTW Mr Conroy's style kinda reminds me of you :)

I am shocked that "the wheel of time" series by robert jordan was not one of the finalists, well 13 of the finalists...it is a series...you could be reading them till the end of the year...

Vickie... we are recent kindred spirits. Before the Kindle app, I was neglecting some much needed reading.

Jeff I agree. I always have my books with me on my phone. Sometimes I would find myself with dead time somewhere and not have anything to do...but between by RSS feeds going into my iPhone and my kindle app, I am always good to go.

Also if you like reading American history kind of books, Nathanial Philbrick is great. I loved Mayflower and have another one, I'm set to read. How did I function before without my iPhone?

I can't remember the last time I read a book. I guess that is pretty bad. All of my time is spent reading online now.

Both my hubby & I have read everything Pat Conroy has written, so I understand TLW's priorities. Kindle worthy, BTW!

I know you have lots of children but do hope "Green Eggs & Ham" isn't one of your recent downloads...

If you do decide to take on some Conroy start with "Beach Music". Out of the ones I've read thusfar, it certainly was the best. I think you'll enjoy the story, assuming of course you're reading for pleasure :)

Now back to The Great Santini. Can you say child abuse? Ooops. Didn't mean to give anything away :)

Jeff, I guess I'm going to have to check out Kindle. I've had my iPhone for 5 months and have yet to download any aps!!!

I guess I have to 2nd TLW's book suggestion. I get to read her books after she finishes. Pat Conroy is an awesome write. "Prince of Tides" is still my favorite Conroy book.

Have a wonderful vacation, Jeff! A fave book of recent years, for me, was James Michner's THE COVENANT. He's a powerful storyteller, and historically accurate...In this book, he tells the story of the cultural development of South Africa over a 2000 year timespan...Similar to the sort of approach Alex Haley had with ROOTS. You become engrossed in the families and relationships and the drama of the historical accounting. It's a big, fat book, and I could hardly put it down. It also helped me, tremendously, in understanding the South African culture (as I'd lived there in the late 90's). Since you have ties over there with your wife's work, you may both find this captivating.

How about Ayn Rand. The Fountainhead if you want something light and Atlas Shrugged if you want something a little more challenging...

Jeff - This looks like a great list. I also just finished "Outliers" and I loved it, although I have enjoyed all of Gladwell's books so far. I also really enjoy the iPhone Kindle app!

I have a book with me all the time - but haven't gotten a Kindle yet. . . One of my all time favorites is "The Book Thief" - like Kite Runner and Pat Conroy but this one blew me away. This is a good reading list for me as well.

I'm so glad I bookmarked this.

It will give me some reading ideas for when my affair with Mr Conroy comes to an end :)

Jeff, good topic. I don't have the Kindle - as I LOVE turning pages and I'm very hand's on. Sounds like you have some good suggestions, and I'll check them out as well. I'm ready to dig into my latest purchase: Glenn Beck's Common Sense. Enjoy your trip and keep us in the loop.....

This is great Jeff! It reminds of a job interview I had in 1990 in Savannah, GA. I was brought there from LA and asked on a Compuserve Bulletin Board for things to do and see. I got a recommendation for a restaurant that happened to be the favorite of the company owner. He couldn't believe that I knew about this "hole in the wall!" We've come a long way since then, but the concept hasn't changed a bit!

Julie... I guess my vacation was a success because I was only able to get through one of the books. I chose "The End Of Poverty" to be the first I read and it was as good as advertised!

OH, I am so far behind on leaving a comment for anyone to see...but for the good of my reading soul--and my spelling abilities--I must confess out loud that books on CD became my favorite method of devouring the written word while majoring in contemporary literature several years ago. Having a mind that tends to wander unless riveted by something, I find that plugging into a well-read book on CD contracts my distracted mind, while allowing me to finish physical tasks I might otherwise dilly-dally over. I once "read" an 8-disc book while I cleaned my kitchen. When the book ended, I was bewildered to discover that everything in the kitchen sparkled, and in my hand was a grubby old toothbrush that I had used to probe every corner of gunk. Alas, what works for quieting my distracted mind has also led to my need to consult a dictionary for my dwindling spelling prowess. Thanks for the new book list.

I became a fan of audio books when my mother lost her sight. As an avid reader, English teacher this loss was torture to her till, we got those wondeful books. They were on cassette then, I listened to 15 hours of the whole story of the Wright Brothers. It was life changing. Currently I have read and loved ZERO LIMITS by Joe Vitale. the message is simple.

I love you, I'm sorry, I forgive you, Thank you. The most powerful words in the world to use for yourself your family your situations in life...so healing.
