If I was to change careers, which career do you think would suite me? by: Robert Swetz

I have had several different career changes on my mind that I would like to share with everyone. And for everyone that knows me through the AR network, I would like some of your opinions!

I have been thinking of a possible career change in the distant future and it would have to do with photography of course. Here are some of my ideas for careers that I would be interested in.

And remember when giving your opinions, (high salary) is not very important to me it's loving what I do for work!

1)   Photographer for a Travel magazine:  Taking photographs of places I have traveled and writing and displaying photographs of places around the world.

2)   Photo Journalist:  Taking photographs of news, places, sports, etc., for newspapers and television.

3)   Criminal Surveillance Photographer:  Taking photographs of persons under surveillance.

These are just a few ideas that have ran across my mind in the last couple of years. As I was writing this post I thought it might be very interesting to publish my own travel magazine with photographs and stories of places I have traveled.

If I was to publish my own travel magazine would any of my friends be interested in reading & viewing it?

I'm going with #2...why, you asked...#1...you are much more confident as a photographer than a writer.  #3.  I think you would get bored with this...I know some undercover guys and I think you would get tired of this quick...I think you would be outstanding at #2...   :-)   Known you a while...

Karen- I really like your answer and you have known me a while and it's been a pleasure.

I also think #2 would be a good job for me because there is some excitement and ever changing situations! I have been told by friends and family that I would be very god at it.

Robert, what about weddings? bar mitzvahs? graduations? anniversaries? ....

I've not been with AR long, so don't have the history that longer-time ARs have. What I have gleaned thus far, I would go with #2.

I have another suggestion - Have you heard of Steve Uzzell ?  He is an amazing photographer and also a speaker.  I saw his Open Roads - Open Minds seminar at a conference last year.  It was the neatest seminar.

The lights were turned off and his photos were shown on a screen with his commentary.  He has done stuff for National Geographic, commercial photo shoots, and he loves taking photos of trucks and being on the road.

I think you should do the same thing!!!!

VB, I am with the others, I say #2, that is of course unless you get a partner who prefers to write, then you could open your travel magazine. You always go to some very interesting places after all!

Rob - as soon as I saw your title (before reading your post), photographer was definitely the most obvious profession.  While I think you would be wonderful at #1, I think you would get bored with #3 so, I'm going to agree with Karen and say #2.
