If you leave a comment, Russel will visit your blog and comment.Several years ago I was supposed to do a morning home inspection about 45 miles from my office. Since gas was high and the drive was long, I confirmed the inspection the evening before. I figured that they would certainly be able to confirm that the inspection was on for a mere 14 hours later.

The next morning I got everything in the car and set out during rush hour so I could get to the property on time. I got there with five minutes to spare and did some preliminary documentation. At 8:15 a.m., no one had shown up yet, but I didn't worry since they might have been fighting rush hour traffic, too.

Eucalyptus, Balboa Park, San Diego, CaliforniaAt 8:30 a.m. still no one, so I called the Realtor. I got voice mail and left a message. 8:45 a.m. Nothing. More phone calls, to the Realtor, the Client, even the Seller's Realtor. Voice mails. Messages left. 9:00 a.m. Nothing. I decided to pack up and go hang out at one of the malls just in case............... 10:00 a.m. Nothing.

I headed back to my office 45 miles away. No calls from anyone during my drive back.

Frustrated, as most anyone would be, I prepared for my afternoon inspection, ate lunch, and took a catnap. Fast forward to that evening..............

At about 7:30 p.m., my Client calls wanting to reschedule the inspection. Well, at least he subtly admitted that they missed the inspection since he wanted to reschedule. I asked him if I had the wrong time that morning and if anyone had received my voice mails. He said yes and explained that they were in the car with their Realtor and had been involved in a car accident which sent their Realtor to the hospital. Obviously, no one was thinking about something as insubstantial (at that point) as a home inspection, and I certainly had no problems rescheduling the inspection for the next week.

So remember as you're writing your blog posts about how someone didn't return your voice mail promptly, or didn't return your email promptly, or didn't update the MLS listing promptly, things aren't always what they seem.

On that note, what do you think the following little fellow is? I found him at the San Diego Zoo late yesterday. It might be what you think it is. Or maybe not. The open mouth might tell the herpetologists among us.

I live at the San Diego Zoo. What am I?     I live at the San Diego Zoo. What am I?

Russel--I had a similar personal experience many years ago while waiting for a friend to begin a fun day trip out of town.  I was pacing and getting frustrated, etc. Her delay was caused by an accident her mother had just like your clients.  Mine had a happy ending in that we had a good day inspite of our slight delay.

The critter from the zoo--I don't know.  Tell me, please.

Russel - I have never seen anything quite like that. It looks very unusual, and and none of your photos capture a flicking tongue, maybe that's what makes it unusual? I will stand by for the big reveal.

I hate snakes but the one captured here almost looks like he is smiling at everyone!

Russel:

Whenever shows up late and don't call, or a friend doesn't return calls for days I worry.  Things like this happen to all of us.

Like Caron I don't like snakes, I am deathly afraid of them, but this one is adorable makes you want to hold it.

Hey, Folks!

Except for Mary for telling the truth -- "The critter from the zoo--I don't know" -- and Mike, who is on to something with his "I have never seen anything quite like that. It looks very unusual, and and none of your photos capture a flicking tongue, maybe that's what makes it unusual," I am sooooooooooooooo disappointed in the rest of you. LOL

You just naturally assumed that since it is long and slender that it is a snake. Well, NOOOOOOOOOOO!

This little fellow was over with all the lizards, meaning that he must, of course, be a lizard, right? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

In this case, however, this little guy is, indeed, a lizard. He's an Eastern Glass Lizard. They are legless lizards only superficially resembling snakes. Mike didn't see the flickering tongue and was on the right path to identification. Glass lizards have moveable eyelids, external ear openings, and inflexible jaws, not to mention a standard non-snake-like tongue.

The Eastern Glass Snake generally lives in Georgia and South Carolina, really liking wetlands in sandy areas and coastal dunes. As with many lizards, the Glass Lizard will also lose its tail when under attack from predators, and with the predator now focused on the wriggling tail, the lizard escapes, growing its tail back and living to lose it another day.

So don't be too quick to jump to conclusions based on first impressions.

Hi Russel,

I never jump to conclusions. But when I find out an agent didn't do the right thing, I get annoyed.

That lizard is great!

That's what made it look so unusual...besides the lack of a snake-like tongue it doesn't have any external  ear openings. Very cool Russel, thanks for sharing. - Mike

Russel, I thought he looked like a lizard. And I try to remember this when people don't respond in a timely fashion during a transaction.

I've never seen a legless lizard before. He looks a little friendly in the last photo, like he could be conversing with the Geico gecko.

Interesting critter!  It has a snakelike body but a lizardlike face.  A cute face, in fact, and it looks like something drawn by Disney.
