Be Careful Of What You Receive In The Mail!

By
Mortgage and Lending with George Souto NMLS #65149 FHA, CHFA, VA Mortgages NMLS #65149

Lately more and more of my Borrowers having been calling me, because they have been receiving offers in the mail that make it seem like they were sent by us.  These offer covered a number of areas, from refinancing, loan modification, bi-weekly payments, lower interest rates as well as others.

These offers are not sent on McCue Mortgage Letterhead, but will mention McCue Mortgage very early in the letter, and are worded in a way to make the Borrower think the letter was sent from us.  This is a very sneaky way of trying to get the Borrower to call the phone number that is provided on the letter, thinking that they are contacting us.

This is unfortunate and is in my opinion a total misuse of the public information that these people are unfortunately able to obtain once a loan is closed, and the deed is recorded on the land records in the Town Clerks Office.  These companies use this information to contact the Borrowers, and market their products in a fraudulent manor in my opinion.

Fortunately many of my Borrowers will call me to find out is this is on the up and up before contacting these companies, and I am able to tell them that it did not come from us, and what these other companies are really doing. I always tell my Borrowers that they may receive solicitations like this in the future, and to call me if they do.  If you do not do this, it might be something that you might consider doing in the future, and hopefully help your clients avoiding being taken advantage of by these questionable practices.

George  ~  This is unbelievable.  I am glad that most people seem to be on top of these type of scams and are calling you.  I hope they can track these fakes down and put them where they belong.

Joan, I guess that technically they can do this, but it is such a slimy sneaky way of tricking people into doing business with you.

Ross, I do the same thing.  I throw away the mail and delete the e-mail

George, that is so bad. Just can't stand that type of thing. You would think that with all the attention that poor lending practices has had, this would not be happening. But I should realize that yes indeed, hard times bring out the worst in some.

Hey George,

About a month ago I received some sort of deal from a company telling me I qualified to lower my rate and refinance or even get me out of my loan. It came from some attorneys office and I called them and told them that I never allowed my private info to be published and that how do they know my financial status. They were trying to get me to use their services...i told them they better remove me from their list or they'll get a friendly call from my attorney...they apologized....it was all a ploy to get me to use them for other means and not for the mortgage.

Andrea it does not matter if times are good or bad, there is always someone trying to con someone else.

Bill the people who do this are real sneaky about it, and in my opinion this is outright fraud.

Neal, YEP that is how these people operate, and I can believe that people actually do business with them even after they find out that they are not who they presented themselves to be.

Thanks for the head's up - I haven't heard of this sneaky practice before!  It sounds like fraud to me.  Can you do anything about it?  Have you reported them?
