Thank you Dad for loving my mother.
Thank you for marrying my mother even though she had 7 children, none of them your own. My step-father was 21 and my mother 31. They met and according to my mother, she only had "3 children". She was afraid that she would scare him away if she told him she had 7 children. He came to our house to meet the "3 children", the rest of us were in a back bedroom and we were told not to come out for any reason! We were curious and soon we started trailing out to get a look at this visitor...well, even after he met the rest of us, he decided to stay. They married and a year later, my little sister was born!
Thank you for taking us away from the poverty-stricken life we knew. We were living in Georgia at the time and we were desperately poor with no hope for improvement. We were called "white trash" by neighbors and strangers. The house we lived in had no drywall or insulation and you could see through the slats to the outside. The toilet was outside and we bathed in a metal washtub and we all slept in one bed.
Thank you for putting food on the table and convincing us that we would eat tomorrow as well. There were many times when we'd go hungry because we had no food and when we did have food we'd gorge ourselves. We shopped at Goodwill and we often wore shoes with toilet paper shoved into the toes to make a better fit.
Thank you for loving each and every one of us and staying even when it became difficult to do so. I know it was hard for you to raise another man's children but you did it despite the lack of respect, the challenges and the hurt feelings when someone said "You aren't my father!" You did your best and I am so very glad you stayed. I can't imagine my life without you.
I love you Dad.
Happy Father's Day!
