Obtaining a Reduced Property Tax Assessment on Your California Home

By
Real Estate Agent

I am hearing from a few clients over the last few months, which have interest in possibly obtaining lower property tax assessments on their homes.  Generally, these folks are individuals who purchased homes in the last few years, at the height of the market, and now find their homes worth less than they paid for them.

I am providing the link to the County of Sacramento Assessor's Office, which has links so if you think you may qualify for a reduced assessment you will be able to easily find the necessary information to handle this yourselves.

I do want to warn you, that like loan modification scams, there are entities out there that will gladly have you fork over money to them by claiming they will do this for you.

I strongly suggest you avoid any scams, and simply go to the Sacramento County Assessor's Office website which is easy to use, and risk free and begin this process on your own.

For other folks living in other Counties in the State of California, I advise locating the County Assessor's office for your area, and looking for similar resources.  I know several counties do provide it.

Good luck to you!

Not only that, Myrl, but many Sacramento home buyers are finding themselves being assessed at a higher value after closing (especially on short sales and foreclosures), because the assessor's office can't keep up with the new assessments. They'll eventually get that money back, but they still have to pay it.

Elizabeth - Yes, it's true!  My son is closing a transaction on Monday.  It's a foreclosure, which was previously assessed at twice what the selling price is now.  The buyer has already been warned.
