In previous posts, I wrote about the new IRIS National Capital Area Chapter's homeless shelter apartment makeover project.  Two of the three apartments are finished.  On June 9, 2009, at the Shelter House.org Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, the Chapter received the Community Partner Award for work on the Patrick Henry Family Shelter.  As President of the chapter, I can tell you that the results and the response from the staff and the family who moved in were rewards enough for the hours of work spent on the redesign and staging of the apartments .  To be the recipients of this award is such an honor.  We are so thankful to be able to give back to the community in this way.

Community Partner Award and Congressional Record

As if that weren't exciting enough, we were also presented with an official copy of the United States Congressional Record for June 9, 2009 in which Congressman Gerald R. Connolly of Virginia recognized "Shelter House.org and in particular the contributions its volunteers make in service to our community", and names the Interior Redesign Industry Specialists as the Community Partner Award winners for the Patrick Henry Shelter.

This project, which begain with a desire to redesign and stage one apartment for the Shelter grew into a committment to fulfill an immediate need for three.  Deserving redesign has created ripples that we would never have expected.

Congratulations Pam and yeah IRIS!  That's something definitely worthy of multiple press releases.

Just took a look at your RES and they're great.  The first one game me chills and the second was so upbeat with the music and colors.

 Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ginger, I'm trying to get back to the PR after being co-lead on the last apartment.  So much to do-s little time seems to be my mantra these days.  Glad you liked the RES-are you using them?  I find the music limited but love the quick visual it gives.

Have you finished your Haven? Would love to see the photos or a RES.

I have had the opportunity to be part of this group for about three years now and they are one amazing group of women both in their talent and willingness to give.  The award is well deserved and I am happy the group was recognized for their generosity.

Hi again Pam.  Yes I do a RES (or two) for every house that I work on, be it redesign or staging.  I even did one for our vacation rental in Hawaii and they had music that was perfect.  It really sets the tone.  The haven probably isn't going to happen as a true "haven" but I will be helping out this woman try to make her home more "livable".  It will take some time but we will do it.

Sandra thanks for your help with the third apartment-our most challenging yet because it was so tiny.  We had a great time and it was a wonderful opportunity to draw upon everyone's talents.

Ginger, would like to hear more about your haven experience.  Our group is going to work on a handbook of sorts for doing philanthropic projects and hope to network with others to learn from their experiences too.  It might be something to discuss at the conference in September.  Are you going?

Wow, Pam, that is great!  Those kind of projects are so rewarding and it's nice that you also received some wonderful recognition for your wonderful work.

Thanks Diana.  We are constantly amazed by the response we have received from thr public.  We could have opened up a Sofas R Us store with the number of sofas and sectionals that people wanted to donate to the project.  Unfortunately, everyone was too large for the next tiny space we were going to do which would barely hold a love seat.  People are hapy to give when they see the results for themselves.

Pam, that was so amazing! You all did a beautiful thing and you deserve all the rewards you received!  I was moved thinking of the good you have done.  Way to go!

Lisa, thank you so much.  We have learned a lot from this project and our previous one for a different charity.  Every project is different and we are going to take time to review other opportunities to help groups.  The opportunities may take other forms and that's another chance to be creative.  I hope you will have a chance to be part of a project like this, too.
