How much information are you giving out to people you don't know, and you wouldn't want to know?

This is a serious problem and a few folks are beginning to understand that what they write on Active Rain, Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites is open to the PUBLIC.  Did you hear that?  The PUBLIC may know your young child's name. They may have saved a photo of your precious little son or daughter.  They may know where they go to school, what activities they are involved in, etc.

Are you giving out information on the World Wide Web that you really don't want everyone in the world to know?

This has always been a concern for me and I value my privacy.   I try to be as open with people on the networks as I can and let folks get to know me.  You should too if you are a real estate professional blogging for fun and for business.  There are some things though, that should not be put on the web.

Clark Howard on CNN today talked about how some people are returning from vacation only to find their homes have been burglarized while they were gone.  How did the crooks know they were gone?  Easy!  The people wrote about their travels while they were gone and posted it on the web.   So for your safety, make sure you do NOT post your vacation until you return from it or you may find the robbers were reading your blog too.

Ricki, the items I think are especially unsafe are people saying they are going on vacation with empty homes left behind. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the home is probably not occupied during this time. Good points you make.

Hi Gary,  It's scary when you think about it.  We don't know who is reading our blog and we sometimes forget it is not only our friends.

Hi Ricki,

I agree, I have always been cautious when writing about the personal aspects of my life for that reason. I have always tried to educate my children that way as well. Great Advise! Thank You for posting it.

Hi Judy,   It is wise to not be too open about our lives online.  It is easy to say too much especially when you are talking to friends back and forth like here on AR.

Howdy there Ricki

Very very sound advise my friend. For anyone that is blogging or even that have a website. Some folks put up small personal websites. To post family photos and the like on. The site's that folks put their family history on even.

Very fine and helpful tip for all to fallow!

God Bless America

Hi Ricki... this is GREAT advice!  So many of us forget that what we post about is out there for anyone to see and act upon.  Clark Howard's story is a vivid reminder of that.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Howdy Dale,   Yes those family websites worry me.  TMI, if we could just limit who looks at them.

Hi Steve,  I just wanted folks to stop and think before they post. Thanks for commenting.  I see you are up very late again. :)

I actually heard about that story through Twitter the other day and Retweeted it. Thought it was an excellent example of what NOT to do. I do give information online, but I do not believe its too much information. I certainly would not announce that NO ONE IS HOME.  Thats crazy!

Be careful Shirley,   We want you to be safe. :)

Hi John,   Some people just forget, thinking they are talking to their friends but the internet is like having coffee at a friends house and some one you don't know is just outside the window listening in.

Ricki thanks for the reminder. Next time I go fishing I'll show off my catch when I get back. Seriously we do all need to be more careful.

Thats a good analogy Ricki. I do my best to keep it private, but I do like to share some personal things. It just wont be "Im leaving on vacation for a week" or even a day.

Hi Carl & Ceil,  Yes, we do need to be careful.  Can't wait to see your next catch. :)

Hi John,   That's good.  Never let people know where you are going unless you are a Realtor and going to show property, then tell everyone in the office!

Ricki great post many don't understand concept of World Wide Web, why since college I have never disclose my residence, never receive mail at my residence, I won't allow unless a personal friend know where I live ...we are at risk another measure have your clients qualified prior showing homes
