Oh Tom... It's "Take Your Dog to Work Day..."

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

soon.  From an email from the Capital Area Humane Society:

"Friday, June 22, 20067 marks the official "Take Your Dog to Work Day" this year, and it seems more and more people (and canines!) are trying to get involved in this relatively new, fun, and exciting venture. This is a wonderful concept for several reasons. Most obvious is the fact you get to spend the day with a favorite furry friend by your side. But it also helps the dog. Spending time in a new environment with relative strangers (or even not-too-often-seen friends) can help socialize your pet, getting him used to new faces, smells, and experiences.

So you want to become involved, but no one in your office seems aware of this day? Don't hesitate to approach your boss with the idea of bringing your dog, but make sure it's done carefully and thoughtfully. Keep in mind some working establishments just aren't well equipped
for an animal to be there, whether it's due to the nature of the job, the people that visit, or the building itself. "

Do you think blogging about it on ActiveRain and forwarding it to Tom (an ActiveRain member) via mail from ActiveRain counts as approaching him?  Carefully? Thoughtfully?

BuddyWe have lots of dog lovers in our office.  Top of the list is Elaine with her Murphy, a wiener dog (Dachshund?)   Then there's Murphy's distant relative Schotzi who is Bettsy's.  Bobbie Marie the Maltese who is Judi's. Long ago we had a woman in the office who had a great Dane.  I think that was when we started having a hard time sneaking dogs into the office. Eve has Sarge.  Tom is a dog lover, or his wife Kathy is anyway.  They have a Bichon? Or two Bichon?

That's MY Buddy.  Mutt. Adopted from the Capital Area Humane Society.

Dogs just do things in the office... bark and worse.

The TYDTWD site has a photo contest.  Elaine might have a photo or two of Murphy to submit.

Real Living HER Worthington has such a nice big office backyard the neighbor dogs use... I've blogged about our backyard and the neighborhood dogs.

Columbus pet lover yet you are more feline inclined? Like a sweet quiet kitty cat who stays home?  Today on ColumbusBestBlog.com  I have  Columbus Cat Crisis.

To be announced shortly ...Take Your Blogger To Work Day?  Can you socialize them?

Most obvious is the fact you get to spend the day with a favorite furry (?) friend  by your side. But it also helps the blogger. Spending time in a new environment with relative strangers (or even not-too-often-seen friends) can help socialize your blogger, getting him used to new faces, smells, and experiences....

Good blogger!

Elaine you are so much more in tuneto that than me.  I don't believe I knew George had a dog...or maybe I did.  I don't know Stephanie well.....  I of course know about Malcolm (spelling?)

Good list. "they don't make 50 copies of their hands in the copier" or other body parts.  Really most of the kids are very well behaved.

Herb:Dachshunds are special.  They were bred to hunt badgers?  Dach must be badger in German.

Don: Is the Greyhound a rescue?  Former racer?

Hi Maureen - Both my dogs are rescues.  The Greyhound is a former racer from Colorado.  She only ran 40 mph, though, so she never actually raced, and we were able to adopt her when she was only 2 years old.

The Italian Greyhound was also a rescue, but a different scenario - he was abused by his owner and removed by the police (so we're told) with a metal choke chain that was too small for him, so the skin had grown around it.  Poor thing.

I was going to say the good thing about "She only ran 40 mph,  though, so she never actually raced" was that it would be easier to catch her. Of course you would have to run 40 mph... how fast people run I have no idea...   I grew up on a street with a family that raised Greyhounds for racing...or that is the story as I remember it.  I think long before there was Greyhound racing in the US.  Certainly before there was Greyhound racing in Wisconsin.  Maybe it was just a legend... anyway THE Greyhounds got out occasionally on their own and they RAN.  Our neighborhood was a loop off a main road, they'd take off like it was a racetrack.  The neighborhood kids were scared of THE Greyhounds.  Or I was.

Good work on rescuing!

I can't tell Italian Greyhounds from Whippets.  Walking if we run into a small Greyhound I say "Whippet?" and the owner says: Italian Greyhound.  I ask "Italian Greyhound?"  and they say "Whippet"   I think they are messing with me.

don't tell anyone but I probably usually ask "Whip It?" ...really with the Devo music playing  in my head when I see a small Greyhound anyway... They of course think I am asking "Whippet?"

The BEST thing about being the broker/owner is.....everyday is take your dog to work day, lol!  We have 5 so they alternate.  My son (who is my admin assistant) has a new puppy, so he gets to come with him most days and I think that is why Chris puts up with working with me.  They also don't roll their eyes and ask "are we going home soon"!

Michelle: Do you know Linda Davis (moonlights as Carnac here on AR?) Linda has office cats.  My friend Pam Bell has office cats in her NJ office too.  We have a big office.  We have some people who would not appreciate the presence of pooches. Elaine does not work in the office anymore but she used to bring Murphy in to play with us sometimes.

Wanna bet that there is some family looking for a home and they are on the Internet looking for homes and run across this blog.  If they have a family pet, they're going to love the agent blogging about pets in the office.

Hopefully they aren't a family with 3 dogs and 2 cats and 4 children looking for a rental.  I'm sure they aren't because they would have called me.

Back again! Stephanie's labradoodle previously lived with the Rouda's. One of their kids was allergic, or some such reason they had to find a new home.

Murph's favorite show just came on so it's bedlam and barking now and a doxie flying off his ramp!

Maureen - Italian Greyhounds are smaller than Whippets (Whip it Good).  Mine is tiny, so he's easy to tell from a Whippet.  But, unless an Italian Greyhound and a Whippet are standing side-by-side, I can't always tell them apart, either.   But don't tell anyone that.

Lenn: Dogs, cats and kids are OK.  Snakes and rodents I do not care for.

Elaine:I didn't know that, I am not in on the Rouda scoop or the labradoodle scoop....Why does Murphy behave that way when that show is on?

Don: Whippets are in the middle... ooooh that's good.  A baby Whippet could be confused with an adult Italian Greyhound or a baby Greyhound could be confused with a Whippet?  I like the word Whippet so much thanks to Devo I will just go on asking "Whip it?" to every possibilty...

I had to go look up Devo and 'Whip It' on Wikipedia.   I did not realize it but they are from Akron.  Whip It was hot in 1980, I moved to Akron in 1983. I don't think I knew they were from there. Not that I was a big Devo fan... I just can't not think of the song when I hear Whippet.  Thanks for the comment Joan.

I love all the dog lovers here!

Every day for us, too, is take your dog to work day! Our office is in our team leader's home - she has a crazy Dalamatian, Sidney, whom I have blogged about...

My dog, Bowden, is also frequently here - he is an Akita mix that Pam found in the median of a busy highway (GA-141/Medlock Bridge Road, for any of you in or familiar with GA). Both Bowden and Sidney are rescues.

Sure, there is barking and playing and occasionally it's hard to hear when we're on the phone, but what a happy, snuggly workplace it is!

Also, as a side note to all you dog-lovers (and pet-lovers in general), check out the Pet Realty Network!

There are lots of dog lovers on ActiveRain Maura but some snarky real estate bloggers will use it as a sign of not being a professional...... Don't like to read an agent's canine capers... move along, there's plenty to read on AR and outside.....

I love all the photos on your entry about Sidney. My dogs have never enjoyed dress up.  As a child I loved dressing up puppies, kittens and my two youngest brothers.

Hi, Maureen,

That's too bad about the "snarkiness" but thanks for the heads up!

It's amazing that a marketing tactic that has worked so well for us and helped us to really grow our business could be seen as "unprofessional"!

While I have not an exhaustive search of ActiveRain for a blog about why you should not take a pet to an open house... I don't think it is here.  I believe it is an urban legend but  I remember a post last fall where the topic of the legend of an ActiveRainer taking their dog to an open house was in the COMMENTS on an entry on ActiveRain. Two members quit over it or partly because of.

Google's been sending me updates of a hilarious conversation in another "real estate community"  "re: spammy point-generating posts with 0 value" on ActiveRain from a member:

"I gave it up when I realized the SEO benefit of REW blogs and forums probably far out weighs AR. I have dropped to 4 now but who cares. I would rather spend my time in here with all of my new found SEO friends instead of talking about "Why agents shouldn't bring their pets to open houses" on Active Rain. LOL. Don't get me wrong, there are some great content writers in Active Rain, but most are spammy point-generating posts that have 0 value."

I don't agree that most of ActiveRain is spammy point-generating posts but I sympathize that not every one here has the same interests as the readers.  I agree Dog Lovers Unite!

Hi, Maureen!

I considered replying to you in a private message rather than as a comment, but then thought, what the heck?!?

Dogs at open houses - unbelieveable!

But clearly a one-time possibly-ridiculous post (I didn't read it so I don't know) and not the norm on AR. I have picked up so many helpful tips and great information in the...oh, 5 days I've been a member! To me, if the post looks ridiculous or "spammy" to someone, they should just move on and read something more serious. No one's forcing anyone to comment about "dogs at open houses"!

Wow! I feel like I've found a kindred spirit! =)

OHHHHHHHHHHHH, we have 4 dogs. They sleep with us, I work out of my home house 90% of the time so they are always here. What a cool post. I was only kidding on your other post about brining Dixid to an OPEN House. No way, no how.

Missy:I hope they are all small dogs.  That other entry is so funny because the fellas keep coming back and commenting as if I am attacking their blogs by talking about them talking about ActiveRain on their site (it is in a forum, not on a blog.)  It is really comical but their dry boring SEO comments have dried up the decent conversation there.  I'd rather talk about dogs .. open houses, there too, dogs are a lot more interesting.  Not that there is not a lot of great SEO info on ActiveRain... just not in that set of comments necessarily.

Ginger:  Buddy is at my feet.

Molly: Choclolate lab and a baby Rott?  Thanks for adding your photos Molly!
