Be Careful Where You Flock......

We have all heard the old saying "Birds of a feather flock together", right? Just the other day an agent in the office brought this to mind when she used is as part of an analogy while talking about some of her friends. You know it was kinda like we were around the water cooler and had nothing better to do and it sure beat working. But I digress......

It seems as though birds have this way of flocking together with like birds. And we humans like to do the same thing.

Those that like to party don't like to hang with those that don't party. Football players like hanging with Flocking Turkeys football players, baseball players with baseball players, chess players with chess players, etc.

Then we enter the workforce and the next thing you know some of us like to hang with the gossips and that is normally done around the water cooler, while those that like to work will hang with those that like to work or maybe be loners cause they can get stuff done.

Here is the point, If we continually hang with the gossips in our office and talk about those that are making the money going to a lot of closes. Then we will not be making any money and will soon be leaving the business.

Check it out; if you are in the gossip group your day goes something like this:

Meet our group at the office at 8:30am around the coffee pot. This is an unannounced meeting only for like kind of birds.
Look busy like the other birds
Go to lunch with like birds and talk about the working birds and the business they have
Go back to the office and look busy like our other fine feathered friends
Leave office at 5pm and head home
Get home with a great story to the spouse, nothing going on today maybe tomorrow will be better.
Next day more of the same ole same ole

I only have one suggestion: Be very careful of who you flock with!! Remember this is your business.

Don, you are absolutely right! Your last line was formed in my mind before I got to the end:))

We pick and choose who we want to be with and who we want to be alike. I don't flock around the water coolers:)

Don - Do we have a water cooler ? That was the first question that popped into my brain. Now darn it , I am going to have to leave the Conference room that I am in just to walk over to the kitchen to look.

Glad my prospective Buyer just left !

Don - I totally agree. we avoid all the usual hangouts, just keep our head down ad keep working. In our office it's a bit easier because we don't have a bullpen ... all the offices are private so we can just shut our door and work!

I think it is important to remeember that we are all judged by the company we keep.

Don - Nice post - like the analogy - soar with the eagles or gobble with the turkeys... it's your business, not mine... but I like to play with winners.

We do have the right to pick and chose who we want to be like.

I heard that Eagles don't flock.

It was so cute that picutre of all the birds together. Part of that is when you go to a pond and through bread or crackers the other birds squeak anc caw so then the birds nearby are alerted to an easy meal. When one spots it they all go investigate and go for a piece of the action.

Maybe that is why people flock, too.

We don't have a water cooler but we do have a coffee pot and folks can flock around it. How is it I have this feeling that you flock with the right folks?

It is odd I had all kinds of flocking birds and even single pics of birds and these are the two that I chose. I like hanging with winners too my friend and that is why we get along so well.

So true, It is hard to pass em by at times they seem to have the halls covered. I liken that to the ones that e-mail all those jokes as well.

I like to hang out with real estate investors...the players where deals are closed.

Ther does seem to be a lot of this type of activity going on especially when you be flocking with the wrong birds.

To be a truly upstanding, honorable person (not just an agent)... and to live in obedience with biblical principles, we really shouldn't be gossiping at all, although most people think there's nothing wrong with gossiping. But to take this a step further, any time someone want to tell us some really juicy gossip (which is frequently hard for anyone to reject) we should tell them we don't want to hear it, and walk away. =)

Oh, and after that, we should get to work and/or seek out the highest producing agents, and observe how they do business.

AR is one huge FLOCK sorta like geese tho. I think that we are always honking to encourage others unlike the gossips that want to discredit the leaders/producers. I agree with the gossips getting the flock outta here.

Don - Interesting analogy with a photo of "turkeys" flocking together. Who needs gossip when you can be out hanging around with buyers/sellers? You have to love diversity, because you never know who your going to meet in this business. Makes it all that much more interesting.

Don - Ben Franklin would have preferred to associate with a flock of turkeys rather than eagles. Actually, the wild turkey is a pretty elegant bird. But, yes, we tend to become like those we associate with. Chose companions well. When I was in the Navy, I hung out with Navy people. When I worked high tech, I hung out with high tech people. Now that I am in real estate, I hand out with Navy & high tech people. Hmmmm...

Great analogy. I was enthusiastically nodding my head by the time I got to the part about how their day goes. I have worked with some turkeys...ummm agents that fit your description to a T:) Their day goes just exactly as you described. That's why I work mostly from my home office. A lot less distractions from the flocks and a lot more work accomplished.

I have never been one to flock much... and I have paid a price with some of my colleagues! Oh well, those in the flock do like those who are not part of their flock!

You have the right idea of hanging out with buyers and sellers. It is much more profitable. And yes you do have to like diversity.

Loved your post! That was the most obvious thing at my old company! I could never get any work done when I was a new agent since I didn't qualify for an office and our resource center was the hub for the gossip. It's hard for a new agent to figure out what to do with all that around. Thankfully, I figured it out and got out of there! We don't have too much of that at my KW office as everyone is working hard there.

Don, this reminds me of an old saying, "It's hard to soar like an Eagle when you work with a bunch of Turkey's". Great post!

Hi Don-I think a lot of people like it better to be part of the pack or the flock. It takes a strong self assured person to stand out and be an eagle. The view is magnificent though. Have a great Tuesday<SMILE>

It is easy to get caught up in non-productive activities. Be it gossip or failed business ideas.

Eagles flock but then those are eagles right? I couldn't agree more. Do you think it would help if I posted this on the water cooler for tomorrow morning's meeting?

Good Morning Don....I'm of the same mind as you are here. I detest gossiping on all levels, it just seems so mean spirited. Then there's the saying "If you hoot with the Owls, you can't fly with the Eagles". Now here I do make an exception...occasionally ;-) Who wants to fly everyday anyway!!!

Not only do they suck the life out of you, somehow they suck you in to their thinking.

I was once told you are always going to make the middle amount of money of your 4 closest friends, 2 will make more, 2 will make less. If you want to make money, make more friends that make more money!

ummm....I'll try to explain ;-) Owls are night creatures who hooooot the night away. From that you might deduce the Eagles are up early ready for the days action. So if you're up hooting with the night owls you might sleep past breakfast and miss the morning action. I'm sure you're all squared away on this now ~ RIGHT :-)

Hmm, let's see - I have the corner office, pack my lunch and bring my own water. Everybody knows where I am if they need me. I got invited to hang with the "lunch bunch" the first couple weeks, but not anymore. Hardly anybody interrupts me, they know I mean business when I am in the office. Got them trained :)
