Have you noticed that some of the tree's are dying from lack of water?

Both the oak tree and cedar that are popular in this area can usually go without water for a substantial length of time. Stress is beginning to catch up. We noticed this year not as many leaves in the spring and the trees are beginning to look pale. What once had a huge canopy is now sparse. Pray for rain so we won't loose our trees.

Worst hit is Central Texas and the Hill Country, where exceptional drought, the most severe designation, has persisted for months and is the driest area in the U.S.

To manufacture food, plants need: The nutrients + soil moisture from water + Carbon dioxide from the air + the sun's energy.

A mature oak tree can draw up to 50 or more gallons of water per day. Trees take up water through their root system. Some of the water evaporates from the leaves in a process called transpiration. I had no idea these trees needed so much water.

*In the population program if you don't select all the nutrients and all the water required for proper growth, the tree leaves will grow yellow (more yellow the less water and nutrients). Under these conditions, the acorn production will only reach a percentage of their full potential. At some point because of lack of nutrients and/or water, the trees will not grow at all and will not produce any acorns. After looking at the previous table you now know that lacking a specific nutrient affects a different aspect of the tree development. Also, when not enough water or not all nutrients are available, the trees will grow much slower and smaller but will not stop growing

    Howdy there Carl and Ceil

I knew they needed a lot of water. But sure did not know it was that much water they were a needen.

Also if they are not producen many acorns, thats also going to affect the deer in the area. And then afftect the folks. Because the deer will just say, it time to go visit the neighbors and eat whats in their yard. There sure is a lot of things that can end up being affected when theres not enough rain fall in an area.

Oh Great Spirit of ran, please hear us and give the Hill Country of the Grand State of Texas Rain, and all other parts that are in need of your sweet rain of life!

Carl, we had a bad drought a few years back and we lost a lot of mature trees in our area. Pines seem to be more susceptible to lack of water conditions. Thanks for the information and timely post...

Dale thanks for stopping, you are correct if a tree doesn't get the nutrition necessary to survive it will not make it. I was surprised also about the water, I knew pecan trees needed allot of water and also cedar but that is a great amount even if it is a mature tree.

Michael we have lost many of our fine oak trees to oak wilt; I feel lack of water will open the situation up to many diseases including oak wilt.

Dale I forgot to mention acorns, they were very small last year. The deer are really hungary. By the way the new fawns this year are running around and doing great; they are at the curious stage.

There are a lot of cedars in the hill country but I have heard that the cedar is not native to the area and that they use a lot of water.

Before moving, we asked the builder to contact the city about removing some "dead" trees from behind the property as there were no leaves whatsoever on them last year... they completely looked dead!

They didn't get very far with the city, and I guess it's good because there are leaves on those same trees now.

Shirley - Ricki is the one that knows about cedar trees. Hope she stops by.

Donna - Glad they are coming back. They really add to the landscape and definitely help with shade and many other reasons not to loose them.

The trees and shrubs are really suffering and we're not far from Stage 3 Water Rationing unless we get some rain soon.  I had no idea trees needed that much water.

Ceil, we have to keep doing the rain dances everyday -- maybe we can "stir up" a little rain.  :)

    Howdy there Carl and Ceil

Are they callen for any rain in your area yet?

If-en there was some way I could rope, the rain clouds here. I sure would pull them out of the sky, and load them on to a truck. And ship them down to Y'all.

We are needen a lot of sunshine to dry everything out. Deb and I have lot five tomato plants, and some green and orange bell pepper plants so far. Because of to much rain and no sunlight for them.

Judi I'll tell Ceil. I think she and Jeanne have another neighbor about to join them. I told Keith awhle ago we may need "a small hurricane" to bring in some moisture to the hill country.

Dale - send it on, we'll take it. I remember a few years ago we were saying "rain rain go away please come back another day" now look at us.
