Love your job and your customers

As a salesperson I have often been seen arriving first at my office or being one of the last to leave.  I spend almost all day long on the phone and the internet aiding my clients and answering questions for potential clients.  I am a firm believer that a smile can be heard over a phone and I also feel that sincerity is an aura that a person can give off while speaking with clients.  Your own happiness can be an integral part of your perceived customer service and customer care.

How does one stay happy when working our mortgage/real estate 1/2 days? (by half days I mean 7am to 7pm btw ;) )  Easy.  Love what you do.  Love who you work with.  Enjoy what you accomplish.  We all spend roughly 60% of our waking lives with the people we work with, doing our career objective.  Why would any sane person spend that much time in a career they don't want to be in?  There is a variety of possible answers because we are dealing with people, who can be the most complex and confusing creature on the planet next to the platypus.  Personally though?  If I didn't like what I was doing, I'd move to another career on my own terms before my attitude got me moved.

I've been lucky and found a job I love doing.  I get to help people and use one of my two super powers.  Since I was 6 or 7, I've been great with electronics.  I can make most software and hardware operate as it's designers hoped it would.  I'm the guy that enjoys reading both 'the manual' and then a couple of guides or extra books, and then possibly even write a guide of my own.  It is a natural that I would be helping people to make their websites 'sing'.  The average person, who I discover is almost always never average, usually just needs direction for their marketing ideas with their website.  Or they have direction and just need help getting their website from point A to point B.  Either way, it keeps me working and happy.

What is my 2nd super power?  Empathy.  I love to feel what my client is feeling and to try to help them feel either happy or satisfied.  I would never be good at a job where I didn't get to work with others or I didn't get to offer some kind of service related task accomplishment to a client (preferably lots of clients).  Many of my clients are people you really can love.  In the emotional physical sense? Of course not.  Just as you can love a painting or a design of a car.  People are just so interesting and different that to be able to find one that you cannot love is not an easy thing.

To some, all of this will sound possibly too California or too hippie. No worries though, as I'm happy as I've said.  If they are 1/2 as happy as me, they are doing OK.  Although, many can out earn me, few can exceed my feelings of worth and happiness.  So my advice is to find something with your job and your clients that you love and keep that in your thoughts.  Be happy.  I don't believe in the ‘don't worry’ part as I'm a father and find that I always worry ;), but be happy.
