Link popularity and how to check your site for broken links

Everyone talks about search engine optimization and how you can move yourself higher on the list. One way is to link out to other web sites and have others link to you. This is commonly known as link popularity but you need to make sure you keep YOUR web site current with the links you have on your web site.

Consumers want community information or school information from your site and therefore, you link out to another site as a new window or many of you link out as a frame on your web site. How do you know they are all working properly?

There is a place you can go and enter your web site and it will validate all your links on your web site instantly and I recommend you take advantage of this tool. Click here to go to this Validator tool to check your links.

Consumers visiting your web site that find broken links are a sure fire way to lose the traffic, the lead, the potential business that might have occurred due to your web presence. Don't let broken links on your site drag you down and stay on top of your site regularly. Don't count on your web master to do this for you.

Well that's a handy little tool. You gotta know we love new tools around here. The downside to this is now I feel compelled to check out sites and make sure our links are working. Thanks a lot :)

I have found the tool to point out areas that need improvement on the web site. It's not perfect but it does a good job finding the major issues you need to be concerned with. Agents have valuable data on their sites and webmasters will prevent robot scans that are not search engines from surfing sites to prevent screen scraping of any kind.

Outside vendors and companies will search for real estate related sites that don't have tight terms of use or privacy statements and will literally take your data and post on their site as being their data with rights to the data because of the public domain.

It is a good idea to review your privacy and terms of use statements and discuss with your webmaster what they do to protect your data.

Great tool, and it works WELL - BUT, I thinking linking must be CAUTIOUS, and is overated sometimes. I SEO fo Google mostly (68% of searches worldwide), and they return very few links for my site. Still, I'm ranked well for 15 or so terms.

Greg - so true AND when linking out to others -- you lose control, you are at their mercy and if they change their content or the link -- it becoming broken.

The link was not checked due to robots exclusion rules. Check the link manually

This is a permanent redirect. The link should be updated

Not sure what this means but it doesn't seem to be good news. any insight?

Scott - I can see that this could be very beneficial as many of us have more than one website, and multiple links. It's hard to keep up with everything, so if this makes it easy to check, I'm all for it. I will check it out.

Found some broken links and bad ones so had to correct them, sent a few to my web-masters.

Stopped on the AR blog as I've been here 2 1/2 years and it was taking too long.

I'm glad you told me of this, I found 2 links on my site that were broken. I put those links there 2 years ago and didn't think of going back and checking on them.

Everyone should make the time to review their site on a regular bases -- you want the site to function properly but you also want to make sure you have current content. A lot of the links we use out get broken as other webmasters change or alter their url links -- think of it as an annual physical that you shouldn't miss.
