Recently Facebook allowed members to create a username so that you can be identified by a url.  i.e. Tatoo removalwww.facebook.com/yourusername.  In all the rage to choose your username, what kind of consideration did you give to your username? This same concept applies to twitter also.   In all things we do as realtors, mortgage lenders, or any other business for that matter, we are always branding ourselves whether we like it or not.  It starts with the business card, then email header, and then the list goes on and on.  Facebook, twitter and other social media sites are changing the face of how we reach out to consumers.  If you aren't jumping on the bandwagon, now is the time.  If you are, I hope you will carefully consider this suggestion as an extension of your branding strategy.

Personally, I use my facebook page to connect with people I know versus connecting with possible links for referral via other realtors, lenders, vendors, etc.  But I do have a twitter account for business use. Most people might choose something simple like your full name or your first initial with your middle name for your username.  But in case your 1st choice is not available, I'd like make a suggestion if you are using facebook or twitter as a business tool. Consider choosing a username that reflects your business.  For example, www.twitter.com/chasreexpert.  My user name for twitter is an abbreviated version of Charleston RE (or real estate) Expert.  If you are using these platforms as a business tool, this might be a great way to brand yourself or advertise your niche market so you can connect with people that are looking for your product or assistance. So you might choose LuxuryRealtor or CondoQueen instead.

So what's your twitter/facebook username? Are you going to reconsider your username choice ?

I went with "RealtorJared" on Twitter and "FortWayneRealtorJaredChristiansen" on Facebook.  Good post!

Michele,

Seems like the best URLs are the ones people would pay top dollar for in SEO. Good post.

Jared-Tried looking you up on Twitter but it said the page didn't exist.

Roy-I don't think its bad to use your name, but choosing a unique one that matches your niche is another inexpensive (FREE) way to brand yourself.

Connie-Good for you for diving in.

Larry-Long time no see :) It's been crazy busy which is good.

Ian-Thanks for the follow. I couldn't agree more.

I wish I had thought this through a long time ago. My Twitter name is RealtorLori. My Facebook name is TulsaRealtor.

I actually signed up for AR in November of 2007, and my AR name was razncain. (My last name is Cain, and my e-mail is razncain.) So, recently I changed my AR name to LoriCainRealEstate. HOWEVER, when I search in google for Lori Cain, AR posts linked to razncain will come up, and of course, the link is dead. Don't know how to fix this other than to let it run its course.

Lori-I think your user names are great choices! Not sure why the old user name still comes up, but hopefully over time, it will correct itself.

I have everything under my actual name and so far it seems to work for me.  You make a great point though because if you are using all different names or something that people can't find you under than what is the point?
