My husband and I helped prepare and serve dinner at one of downtown Atlanta's homeless shelters. It was a humbling experience. There were 4 families residing there while trying to get back on their feet. Behind the main building some of the residents and volunteers had built a small meditation garden and planted flowers. It's a quiet place in an urban jungle.
We just heard last week ...the shelter is closing.
How cool is that to have at the homeless shelter? A great little 'sanctuary' for those suffering major life hardships.

Patty, such a shame. There never seems to be enough money to support the smaller efforts and they're the ones that are usually the most effective. I hope you're doing well.
Indeed not a good thing to hear with the number of homeless that we seem to find on our streets. Altho the ones on the streets are usually there because they want to be. It sounds like this was a place to help people get back on their feet.
Hope they will be able to find some other place.
Debe - one of the "team" at the shelter showed me their meditation garden - he was very proud of it!
Connie - it IS a shame! But this place is in need of updating and maintenance, there's just not enough money to fix it up.
Thom - these folks will be out on the strret in a few months. The property is up for sale (or soon to be) and I have no clue where these families will go. This is the only "family" shelter in downtown Atlanta.
