FORT MYERS BEACH
Sometimes I forget that the grass is not greener the other side of the street. My wife and I moved to Florida in 1990 with one job and a place to rent. We left behind the cold beauty of North Shore MA and its then challenged economy. We started living in Key West, where it seemed then that the time was standing still and after another move to Old Naples we opted for Fort Myers Beach for its more lay back life style and the fact that even though its an island, its so close to the main land that you feel you have the best of both world.
FORT MYERS BEACH
The real estate went through a dramatic boom as we know in 2003 to 2005 and the economy has since been solid due to a slick tax break for companies and the flux of around 1000 new residents every month.I just saw on the news that someone with obvious good taste rated Lovers Key of Fort Myers Beach as the #4 best beach in Florida with Sanibel /Captiva at #9. Even though we are proud to be in the top ten in Florida I really believe that rating beaches in Florida or the USA for that matter is a subjective thing. If you are into car racing Daytona
would be a must.
CAPTIVA
I think they omitted in that list Destin which has sugar sand and lovely dunes, they did put Siesta Key very high at number 5 but I would also put Barefoot Beach In Bonita Springs, and Wiggins in Naples. They rated Miami Beach at number one and Clearwater at number 3.
Barefoot Beach Bonita Springs
The credentials to make that list are based on eco-friendly tourism, family, nightlife, scuba, water-sports and snorking, bird watching, quality of the sand and its water and the overall ecological quality of the frontage in general including the architectural designs of its properties. Some even have credentials as best value.
SANIBEL
I would also add Anna Marie beach at Bradenton and Long Key beach in the top, so would Pensocola,St Peterburg, Baha Honda State Park, Lummus Park Beach of South Beach,Pensecola, Cape Carnaval,Key Biscayne and i am sure I missed some as the ones I mentioned I have personally seen and there is always another beautiful beach somewhere which is not well known. Marco Island has a few beauties for example.
Still I'll stick with Fort Myers Beach with its 7 miles of white sand also known as the safest beach in Florida. To try be objective there is a mile long strech mid island behind the Holyday Inn which is just glorious and stands on its own.I would like to know what you think.

Lloyd,
I've never been to any of those beaches but my favorite Florida beach has to be at St. George Island! A beautiful place that isn't too crowded.
