Click it or Ticket

What's with the laws that are meant to protect you from yourself?

I just got a seatbelt ticket downtown in my small town of Cambria. I wasn't going fast or being reckless. I figured he'd just give me a warning. I have a clean record, never gotten a ticket before - but sure enough he just wrote me up. Something like $90.

I don't agree with that law. Why not spend the time and energy it takes writing me up for not wearing my seatbelt and catch a real criminal? Or someone committing a crime that is actually endangering some innocent victim. I'm just endangering myself!

To me it's the same as the "Got to wear a helmet law." If someone wants to endanger themselves by not wearing a helmet, I say go for it. But they want to fine you for it - "Here's your ticket - We are protecting you from yourself." Geeee thanks.

Honestly though, I'm a big advocate of seatbelts and helmets. My wife was shocked I got the ticket as I am always making everyone buckle up. Maybe that's another reason I'm so upset about it. I just jumped in the car thinking I was going like 2 blocks - then they hit me =\

Well it definitely worked anyway - I've noticed myself thinking even more about wearing my seatbelt than I ever did before.

So buckle up - in California they are starting to enforce this one.

It's an automatic thing here...even for kid's in the back....too many accidents happen right around the corner or whatever. I'm glad you got a ticket. You're safe and will look forward to more of your writing. So, there.

Arguements that make sense

1. Driving is a piviledge, not a right.

2. If you get seriously hurt by your actions.... could they affect others?(higher insurance rates, yada yada)

While I don't like the intrusions of govt in most cases.... this one is to small to argue over

Ok Abraham,
No bellyaching, you got what you deserved--you know the law.  I don't think there is an exception for "going only a couple of blocks".  But I do understand the temptation.  Celeste and Tom make good points.
The upside -- a blog topic for today!

Tom - Though driving in this day and age might be a privilege - I am of the mindset that "The right to travel" in the constitution should be somewhat in effect, with limitations, and that it does apply to automobiles.

Cynthia - Did give me something to write about =) And sometimes we need to hear "Suck it up and deal with it" LOL

Here in NH, we have no seat belt laws for anyone other than children.  They just tried again to pass a bill to make it mandatory as in every other state, and it failed to pass again.  "Live Free or Die" is our state motto, and I guess that applies to everything.

Hey Ann,

I believe in that =D

But I'm a free spirit type anyway. Thanks for the input!
