Networking is such a big topic today.  Everybody is doing it!  There are a few rules to follow to make sure that it is effective.

.) Always have your networking tools with you at all times.  (cards, badge- wear all the time, phone or calendar)

.) Set a goal for the number of people you will meet so you can measure if you met your goals.

.) Act like a host, not a guest - ask if you can help when you arrive and stand by te door.

.) Listen, and ask the five "W" questions:  Who, What, When, Where, Why.

.) Give a lead or referral whenever possible.  Find out who the best referral for them will be.

.) Describe your product or service in 60 seconds. don't be a sales person.

.) Exchange business cards with the people you meet and write notes on the back.

.) Spend 10 minutes or less with each person you meet so that you can met the number of people in your goal.

.) Write notes on the back of the business cards you collect.

.) Follow up with the people you meet. Hand written cards, emails, phone calls - and keep following up.
