14 Comments on Skype on Websites? Skype in Life.
Bill: It is a free download. Just go to www.skype.com --but be prepared with a computer microphone and speakers. I bought a Skype headset at Radio Shack.
So far, life is sane--but that is because I only have one other Skyper in my book. Next week, we work on the website. Apparently, Skype can forward incoming calls to your computer to other numbers. I am still exploring. One reason for doing this is that I will be able to make and receive calls from the laptop when I am in China this November.
Skype as a telephone service is awesome. I have used it in hotel rooms (to avoid the silly charges). :)
China? Have you investigated using the internet there? As I recall some sites are blocked. I had problems finding proper dial up to publish my website there, but this was 6 years ago, maybe things have changed.
In Hanoi at a cyber cafe, someone showed me how to log onto a "secure server" to go around the blocked email/internet thingee. (I felt so subversive) but it worked.
You are going to have such a great time in China...I wish I were going too!
Enjoy!
Kristal: I asked the hotel what internet connections, if any, would be available in the rooms. Sounded just like the hotels here: $12.50 per day for the connection. Now I am wondering if certain sites will be blocked? Do you recall anything about logging onto secure servers?!? LOL!
Sounds like you had the adventure of a lifetime on your Hong Kong to Hanoi bicycle trek. That took a lot of guts.
I've never heard of Skype. Will look into it. Can I get rid of MaBell? Hope so.

Roberta,
You will certainly have access, but I suspect some of it will be limited. I remember not being able to log on to the RE/MAX site in China, it was considered "subversive!" I got a big kick out of that!
My issues on the trip were 1)incompatible dial up 2) not being able to publish my www.biketracks.com in China and Vietnam. I finally did find a work around, wish I could tell you what that was...it's been too long.
I will venture to bet things have changed a lot. I did discover (at the time) it is much easier to find an Internet cafe anywhere in the world, than it is here in the U.S. Just one more indication of our wealth.
BTW, I didn't just ride through China and Vietnam. I rode around the world. 47 countries, 6 continents, 352 days, 14,000+ miles by bike, many more by plane, train, bus, taxi, truck, hydrofoil, ferry and foot. :)
And thanks for the tips on China. My trip will be tame compared to your venture!
Am hoping that Skype or Google Talk will work over there and have just begun the research.
Hey Roberta, wrong kind of bike! and outfit! Think lycra shorts and a yellow helmet! 1 year of helmet hair oh my!
Skype works from China, one of the drawbacks of having it here are all the freaks and weirdos that want to talk to you.
Now that's an assumption on my part, they may be normal people, they just freak me out when they call and want to "get to know me." eeeeekkkkkkk
Kristal, if you click on Tools, then Options, you can change your Privacy settings so people can't contact you unless they're on your contact list. You can also set yourself to Invisible or OffLine even when you aren't. Plus, your clients will feel special when you give them you're Skype ID since not everyone has it.
Jennifer, Skype is VOIP so I think it's here to stay. I could be wrong, though.
Jay and Linnea, calls out by Skype are free till the end of the year, then there will be a monthly charge. You can purchase special Skype phones at WalMart so you don't need a microphone and speakers.
Crystal thanks for the tip. I keep meaning to look for that setting, now you've saved me the time and trouble.
NO wonder you are a great VA!
