They had these memorable television commercials in 1975 where famed TV and movie actor Karl Malden would be hawking the benefits of when traveling on vacation making sure you brought along an ample supply of travelers checks. These financial instruments if lost or stolen, unlike cash, could be replaced and you would go on your merry way (all for a small fee of course). NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE (except when I buy you lunch LOL).

Karl MaldenThe key jingle or slogan that went with this advertising campaign related to signing up for these travelers checks was "Don't Leave Home Without It."

But did you know,

Don't Leave Home Without It Extends Beyond Karl Malden?

Think in Real Estate Agent's or Stager's lives. Surely you pack things in that briefcase or car before you hit the road that are "essential!!" What are they? How about

  • Purchase Contracts, Listing agreements, Agency notification, Disclosure forms
  • Bottled Water for hot summer days, Mallets for putting signs in the hard ground, helium for balloons for open houses
  • Toilet paper, paper towels, items for the kids in the car
  • GPS, maps of destination, how about a full tank of gas for those cranky all day long lookie loos
  • For stagers all their wide and diverse materials, possibly a before and after portfolio of work

Just curious,

WHAT ARE YOUR DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT ITEMS?

I never leave home without my old man hat. It's a dress hat that was common years ago, and I wear one everyday. It's my luck hat.

My Blackberry!  always, and if I am working I always have my laptop with me... so I have everything I could need.

Outside of work, My trunk is full of sailing gear, so I can hop on a boat at a moments notice! last count 3 different types of sailing shoes/boots, and My foulies!

Hi Gary. My biggest problem is remembering to grab my Supra Key. I can't put it into my bag the night before, I just have to remember it when I wake up. I've too often arrived at the seller's front door, reached around into my purse, only to realize that I don't have the Key! OMG! It's just not professional.

But, I've finally gotten past that. I put a note to myself on my bag that says, "Don't forget your key!"

Gary, besides the water, I always keep snacks for the buyers and their kids to munch on. By my having them, I can keep better control of what they're eating in my car.

Gary,

I have a portfolio in the trunk of my car with listing agreements, contracts you name it. My wonderful husband Gene has filled a little basket for my trunk with a Home Depot largemeasuring tape for those wanting to measure, a can of the something to squirt into a lock when a key is being tempermental (it really works great), wipes, kleenex..all kinds of little things I might need!

Gary,

I do not leave the house without my phone, keys and wallet.  Oh and my glasses or I would be dangerous.

I like your Expect Great Things banner!

How about a Genie in a bottle with 3 wiishes?

I forgot my phone when I had to leave early to fill in for someone on floor time who had to leave early.  Should I be late and go back and get it or go in and figure it out.  As a good team player, I went in so my teammate could leave and figured out I could e-mail anyone I was expecting a call from and I did and they called me at the work phone number.  It was nice to see what life was like without it--it was simpler.

Lets see...

My blackberry, my supra key, the office keys which are now attached to the supra key case, my laptop with all my files, forms, my camera, and my head, which may or may not be attached to my shoulders.. depends on the day. I have blown through so many tape measures, there is a tape measure thief who must come and ransack my car... but otherwise, that's my list.

My darn authenticator to log on to the computer.  Business cards to leave when showing.  Gas in the car.  Lipstick to put on at the first red light.

I never leave home with out my girl tool box: WD40, Duct tape, and lipstick.  If it won't come apart and should, use the WD40.  If it comes apart and shouldn't, use the duct tape.  for everything else, put on the lipstick and you can probably get a man to do it.....

My phone, a favorite pen and notebook, a camera, a food bar, water, business cards, an extra pair of shoes,  lip gloss and a smile. (And if I know I'm having customers or kids in the car, I pack a small cooler of drinks & snacks) :-)

Hi Gary... a flashlight is important for vacant listings where the electricity has been turned off.  And, of course, there is the popular response... lipstick!  LOL
