One of the things that excited me most when I heard the 3G upgrade was coming for OS3 was the rumor that we'd be able to tether our iPhones to our computers for wireless internet connectivity.  I've had an air card for a few years, but the idea of being able to deactivate that and just use my iPhone's internet connection of course excites me, because it equates to more money in my pocket.  Needless to say, I was highly disappointed to learn after the upgrade that AT&T wasn't offering tethering as an option 'yet.'

Well, there is now a work-around.  I actually just did this and am now posting this blog post without the use of my standard office internet connection, but rather with the connection my laptop is borrowing from my iPhone.  Follow this link to an article at pcmag.com, which will walk you through setting up iPhone internet tethering on your 3G.  Once you're done, please come back here and let us know that you successfully pulled it off!

DISCLAIMER: As you'll read in the article, nobody knows if AT&T will charge extra for this or, if they do, how much it will cost, so use it at your own risk!

By the way, what's up with the spellchecker telling me "internet" isn't a word?

Ryan,  I'm still jealous of anyone that even has an OLD iPhone!!  I love my Verizon service and here, the AT&T isn't as good and I just won't switch services.  So, I'm STILL waiting on that new Apple version for Verizon--some year down the road!  I'll use my wireless card and keep on working remotely!!

Hi Ryan, I read the article and as I read this , it is one of those risky things that may not be reliable. I tend to wonder why with the expense we already pay that there should be yet an additional charge for using the phone to connect the  TabletPc. The air cards are not all that reliable, at least mine wasn't.

In Debe's comment, the only thing I would say is that I love the iPhone and so far at least the ATT service has been as reliable as my previous Version service. I haven't had one dropped call in the 6 months I have had it.

One thing about the iPhone that I love so much, it is a power hog and is constantly needing recharged.

Worked perfectly. No problems.  I've got an unlimited data plan on AT&T, so let's see what they charge (if anything). This is the biggest update to 3.0 in my opinion.

Pretty exciting! I think I'm going to hold off on tethering. I'm afraid AT&T will bill me an exorbitant amount.

(The spellchecker wants "Internet" to be capitalized)

Thanks Ryan. I downgraded my AT&T air card to the $10 per month emergency plan from the $70 per month alltime plan. The air card if as advertised is the fastest most reliable 3G network then we are all in trouble, especially at that price. For every system there is an anti-system and thanks for the latter, I am on the way there now.

Ryan, I am assuming this will only be that effective is you have a WiFi connection versus the 3G?  I have the new 3Gs and it's amazingly fast on the network, but once I'm away and have to rely on the 3G...not so amazingly fast (I'm talking strictly Internet...not the other apps)!  The purpose of tethering would be for a connection away from your home computer...so I think I'll wait it out for further feedback.  Share any surprises you might get on your phone bill in a month...curious about that also!

Ryan,

I find it hard to believe that the IPhone doesn't already include this tethering feature.  I have an old Blackberry Pearl and have used it as a modem for over a year.  When I'm somewhere with no internet connection, it can be a lifesaver!  It isn't superfast, but it saves me $70 bucks per month!

Hey Ryan, did they ever get the tethering feature done with the Iphone?  I'm thinking of switching over and was just wondering...
