The Blue Beet in Newport Beach, California, site of REBarCampOCI had the pleasure of meeting up with some great minds in social media and technology today at The Blue Beet in Newport Beach at RE Bar Camp Orange County (#rebcoc for those Twitter folks). This was my second bar camp this year and it did not disappoint.

First, congratulations and thanks to some of the folks I know who were involved (and my apologies for leaving out people who also contributed) - Stacey Harmon, Jim Marks, Linse Planeta, Loren Nason, Eric Stegemann, Gretchen Benes, and Devesh Khare. The venue - a REAL bar, will multiple levels and rooms, practically on the ocean in beautiful Newport Beach. What could be better for a bunch of Californians (oh, and few visitors from further away including Rob Hahn from NJ) than a day at the beach, which, after the June gloom burned off turned out to be spectacular.

Having fun at RE Bar Camp Orange County in Newport Beach, CAAnd of course it is always fun to run into good friends, and meet news one already known on-line - Stacey Harmon, Ricardo Bueno, Robin Fenchel, Elaine Hanson, Lynda Eisenmann, Vicki Lloyd, Morgan Brown, Sharon Paxson, Dustin Luther, to name just a few (I apologize for forgetting who else I met and talked to), as well as other folks there I just didn't have time to connect with.

It's hard to capture the spirit, enthusiasm, sharing and so much more that happens at these events, but those of you who have gone know well enough how terrific RE Bar Camps are for learning and networking.

Just a few takeaways, in no particular order:

Sharon Paxson and Ricardo Bueno caught unawaresNAR announced that 100% of buyers (or someone in the family) will look on-line at some point for a home (I hadn't heard this and it may not be particularly profound, but something to keep in mind...everyone (almost) is on the Internet

Social media is where you market who you are, and demands that you invest in YOU. It will make YOUR brand

Delicious is a terrific free site for social bookmarking. And why not set up a series of book marks to share with groups of people - first time home buyers, sellers, etc. Make sure the content you bookmark makes sense and adds value. And check out Dwellicious for real estate.

Drew Meyers (Zillow) and Jim Marks in the SEO sessionSEO Tips (yeah, you may already know this)

  • Go after the long tail
  • Make sure all your pages are indexed (Drew Meyers recommends Yahoo Site Explorer)
  • The title tag may be the most important - make sure it is not the same on every page of your site
  • Linking out is GOOD - as Dustin Luther has said, "linkation, linkation, linkation."
  • Use social networks and add your blog/website/etc. links to your profile where allowed
  • Keep in mind the anchor text - don't use CLICK HERE unless you want to be indexed for click here.
  • Once you hit the submit button on a post you have done 1/3 of the work - you need to promote your blog wherever and however you can

View from the roof deck ("Surf Daddy") scene of many terrific sessionsFacebook

  • Ask your fans what THEY would like to se on your page then provide it
  • Create "friends" lists - friends and family, real estate professionals, other categories you feel are appropriate to better organize your newsfeeds
  • If you create a business page download FBML application to use to customize

Branding

  • Your brand is your logo, the look, recognition, how people can contact you and A PROMISE. Make sure you can deliver on your promise or change it. Real estate practitioners are usually weak on this
  • How do you distinguish yourself?
  • Social media is not a brand differentiator - who you are IS. Branding is also deciding what NOT to do, like taking a listing that absolutely does not fit with your brand.

All in all a terrific day, great learning, and lots of fun. I couldn't stay for the REAL bar acitvity as I had a walk-through back in my neck of the woods, but you can bet it was a continuation of a great time. If you haven't been and have a chance GO. By all means. Or start one yourself.

Hey Jeff,

It was a great day, packed full of interesting info and you've covered it well.  No doubt a great deal of planning went into this event. And good to see so many friends again and meet new ones.

Nice recap Jeff. It's nice when they are close to home, right?

I just got back from Chicago, 5 hours but we could drive. I enjoy ReBar Camps as the interaction is so awesome. You are a part of the dialogue and not just on the side-lines.

Hi Lynda - It WAS a good time. I can't imagine how much work has to get done onputting these events togteher. And what a terrific place to be.

Tom - there are lots of people who use C:ICK HERE. We see it all the time ourselves. Better to say something like "to learn more about Wisconsin Real estate..." and make Wisconsin Real Estate the link (anchor text).

Terry - thanks. It was just a small bit of what I learned. And now there are some other things to implement or change.

Missy - so true. I love the format and the interaction. And of course all the great stuff you learn, adn new ways to think about our business.

SO much fun to read your recap and even better to have you there participating in the day with us!  I'd say it was the RE BarCamp attendees that did not disappoint.  The curious, generous, and participatory crowd made for a special day.  Great to see you again.  Look forward to the next time.

What a pleasure to meet you and hear your thoughts on blogging.  You didn't recap your rockin' blog session!  You ARE your voice, which is why you naturally found it, BTW.

I am looking foward to following your pearls of wisdom on Activerain.

Stacey - thanks again to YOU. I thought it was terrific

Lola - they are amazing, aren't they? Will you be an Inman in San Francisco?

Lee and Pamela - I appreciate the compliment. There was so much learning it was hard to just snare a few things to share that would be useful.

Sharon - it was fun to meet you. I was so embarassed I didn't immediately recognize you - must have been that hat, and my own spaciness.

Carolynn - well what could I have said that wouldn't sound like self-promotion? :) Thanks for visiting. I enjoyed getting to know you a little. Look forward to hearing more from you here.

Jeff I wish we had events like this closer to me.  I have met several of the ActiveRain members in Connecticut, but would really like to meet other members from other states, and events like this seem like a great way to do that.

Jim - well that is a nice compliment, for sure. Maybe the word is obsessive? Really enjoyed your talk yesterday at REBarCampOC. Look forward to a repeat.

George - why not get together with a few AR agents in the area and put one on? There are some great resources are there with folks who have planned and run these.

Bill - just get yourself to the next one. Or come on out for Inman in August for Bloggers Connect or the REBarCamp in San Diego at the NAR convention in November.

Ahh--I see my Tomato guy (Ricardo)!  Pretty amazing that he didn't miss a beat getting back to me about my blog while he was there!!  I'm creating a site for my partner whose primary focus is short sales and she hates to write--so I told her that I would do this for her and Ricardo is my go-to guy.  He has been amazing!

As for the REBar camp--we had ours recently and it was so much fun!  I had a blast helping the hosting team and it turned out great--so good to meet some fellow-Rainers and share my passion for Active Rain during the camp.

Great recap, Jeff!  I would loved to have seen Sharon (by other blonde-buddy!) and Elaine and YOU, of course!  Glad it was a success and you were able to connect with some of your AR buddies there too.

Debe - it WAS great fun, and I enjoyed meeting Sharon, although we have talked on the phone a couple of times These events are great but there is just not enough time to catch up with everyone, or even to meet everyone adn still listen in on all the terrific topics.

William - well I expect you know (or you will not) about the Bar Camp being done as part of the NAR meetings here in San Diego. RE Bar Camp is well worth attenting.

Kathleen - There will be an RE Bar Camp in San Francisco just before the Inman Connect and the Bloggers connect event in early August.
