His death and music is a constant on the Canadian version of Much Music. The callers have tears in their voices.
A phenomenon that will be long remembered.
Michael Jackson did not receive the adulation from my generation that he did from younger generations. However I do remember watching the Jackson Five in Las Vegas in the 1970’s. I also remember how blown away my ex-wife, a dancer, was with his dancing.
What I am witnessing today reminds me of August 16, 1977. The day Elvis died. Those of us who grow up with The King can tell you where we were when we heard the news. I was driving my 1969 Thunderbird. I remember phoning my wife to tell her. I remember my secretary crying on my shoulder when I told her.
That was a Benchmark Day for me.
Today will be a Benchmark Day for countless millions throughout the world.
They will remember the day Michael died as clearly as I remember the day Elvis died.
Benchmark days play an important role in our lives.
A benchmark day gives you a snapshot of your life at a particular moment in time.
Benchmark days are usually reserved for private moments.
Today’s Benchmark Day will be shared with the world.
Benchmark Days like today bring the people of the world together.
In the future you may meet others from diverse cultures, nationalities, economic status or political views.
Your common Benchmark Day, today, the day Michael died, will unite you, however briefly, in a common experience.
Michael’s contribution to the world will have surpassed his short fifty years.
