I saw this picture and could not resist...sorry...if it is too disturbing for some..please turn away....

Recently, an ugly series of events have been occuring within Active Rain, and other blog sites...and I have heard ALOT of comments about this from agents using Zillow as well.  I have come to know this as "HIJACKING SOMEONES BLOG".

Many of us here on AR blog to make ourselves feel better, to provide GREAT CONTENT to other people in our profession, to build relationships, to inform consumers, to get FACTUAL information out about recent events or changes in the industry, and some do it just to "lighten the mood".  However, I dont think I have met someone who BLOGS, with the specification intention of inviting people to "WALK ALL OVER THEM, or SOLICIT their business or trade within their blog!"

 ******************************************

Folks, it's ONE THING if an outside consumer starts trying to take over a blog, EVEN THOUGH that blog was made PUBLIC....IT IS CERTAINLY another though when a long term Active Rainer, or experienced blogger does it to someone else within this community!  Personally, I think you should be ashamed of yourself for doing this!

I have always been told that is is "better to beg for forgiveness, than ask for permission", but when it comes to blogging, I have decided that it is directly OPPOSITE of that!   There are many people on AR, and in other arenas, that could care LESS if you put a link to YOUR blog, YOUR website, or even to YOUR BUSINESS.

HOWEVER, there are also people like myself, that would merely appreciate an email asking if it is cool!  Recently, I emailed Janet Guilbault and asked HER if I could add a link in my response on her blog, to one of MY blogs!  She was totally fine about it, and even stated that is was ok in her response to my comments..that way everyone could SEE that it was fine!  She, like many others, doesnt care if you put a link in your response! In fact, some people I have spoken to actually encourage it...!  Out of courtesy though, why not ask??

***************************************

In the Military, they have a saying...."When in doubt, whip it out"....Obviously, this has to do with the question of superior command or not!

In other words, it is better to errr..on the side of caution!

Recently, I read a blog that was FEATURED, and had been Hijacked to the EXTREME by a fellow rainer!  Wow, was that disappointing. I cannot even imagine what a newbie might think, or for that matter, someone who FINALLY got a feature, and then wasnt even given a chance to respond...before someone else took it over!!

That leads me to two other small issues:

1.  If you have a blog that is highly contraversial, or very popular, PLEASE do what you can to respond or answer the questions posed within the comments!  I believe, that much of the learning comes not from the blog, but from the comments & answers!

2.  If you ARE going to comment, ( and I always encourage EVERYONE TO COMMENT) and you have a product or service to sell that might help, aid, fix, or solve a situation...come RIGHT OUT AND SAY IT!  Dont be shy!  It may NOT be hijacking... Honesty IS the best policy!  Dont re-direct, link, or say how much better YOU ARE than the blog author...not cool!

UPDATE 6/26/09-  PLease visit TLW's BLOG by clicking HERE.  She did a nice job on her "redux" of defining, and setting out the basic rules!

Okay, now I realize, there are no TRUE RULES regarding blogging, but are there rules for being polite?  How about rules about being courteous, respectful, and professional?  Unfortunately, the "POWERS THAT BE" at Active Rain spend alot of time being referees, fireman, and psychologists!!!  Why is this? They should NOT be forced by our actions, to "police" our blogs!

I do understand that there are HEATED BATTLES to come, and when you are dealing with this many TYPE A personalities all in one forum, you are going to have a fair share of arguements....but that does NOT mean we can't have a little forsight, and try to eliminate these issues before they become problems!  Our industry is under alot of stress right now, and I believe professionalism might be the only thing still holding it together.  Soooo....the next time you type a comment, and you think to yourself...."self", could this be perceived as hijacking.. and the answer comes back I dont know....send an email...!

My two quick solutions to make all the nay sayers happy:

1.  Add a comment to the bottom of every blog that says..."I welcome all links"

or

2.  "Please email me prior to linking or soliciting a product or service on my blog"

Or, we could leave it up to Active Rain to set rules? Do you really want that??

Thanks for reading & Keep selling!

It's very annoying when someone tries to take over your post with commentary that often goes wide of the subject.  I've had many folks try, but I don't let it happen.  There is a guideline.  We don't need more rules.  "DON'T ADVERTISE YOURSELF ON SOMEONE ELSE'S BLOG" is the message of one of the guidelines.  That should be enough.

If you don't care, leave the message.  I do care and I've deleted comments when a competitor in my market area advertises themselves on my post.  I don't have time for the back and forth e-mail.  I tried that long ago, but they wanted to argue so. . .  BLEEP!

I also delete comments when they are nasty.

Darin- Way to go, this will get a gold star! I think that some people are SO petty about the comments. I like debate but I have discovered that most posts, the comments are about 99% supportive. That tells me that someone who disagrees might be afraid to be the voice of dissent. I say go for it. IT is how we learn. If we all thought the same and felt the same, well, it would be so freaking boring here.

On another note, I'd like to tell all the snitches and tattle tailers to give the guys at AR a break! They should be spending their time growing their company not fielding complaints. It is amazing to me the amount of stupid complaints they get! It makes me wonder if they are really out selling real estate! Katerina

I know this is an ongoing issue that probably doesn't have an exact answer. Posting and commenting is not much different than communicating in person. I think people should have the same courtesyin either situation. One thing I've noticed a lot of lately is people commenting answering questions for the person that posted. I have to double check on who wrote the blog. Not nice at all. And also people trying to make themselves look good at the expense of the original poster. Not nice either.

I appreciate what you would have done too...hitting the FEATURE FLAG!~!  :)   I agree, it has become very petty & childish.  There was a particular blog about Redfin too with one of Stewart Penn's blog, that got me thinking about this blog...then the last few I read..I actually started to get upset!  THEN, the straw that broke the camels back, was someone who took over one of MY BLOGS!  Mine, are almost ALL about Sales, Marketing, and tips..etc....as well as industry news...It doenst make SENSE to try and take MINE over...unless you are all about SELF PROMOTION...then, like LENN, I have decided that person is just gonna have to go!

Darin, those are all good points you made.  I would like you to explain what you mean by "hi-jacking" because everyone is not clear on that term.

On my blogs, I welcome any and all comments.  I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but I do like to hear other points of view.  I don't delete anyone's comments, even sales-type of approaches, unless the comments are nasty OR very negative.  And then.............DELETE!

On a few blogs, I've taken the time to email some tips to NEWBIES who apparently did not know the protocol.  They were thankful for my guidance.

Darin, Another good reminder for some folks that may not no that 'linking" on another's post is taboo. As is jumping in and dominating the conversation when it's not your post. Being that I'm on the featured board quite often (high visability) I get hit with spammers frequently.

I emailed a guy a couple of weeks ago who linked to his free short sale product on my post trying to sell one. I could tell by his comment that he was truly trying to be helpful. I emailed him, he removed the link and actually gave me a call. We had a great conversation and then he sent me a free copy of his book. I turned a negative into something very positive for both of us.

I'm kinda new to member services but i think Lenn said it best it is actually against the rues to directly advertise your services on a comment on someone else's blog, but don't quote me on that =D either way great post and here is my link lol just kidding!

Lately, I have responded to participating in a couple of hijacked blogs. I thought it was all in good fun. I didn't mean to be distracting from the blog. Anyway, it's interesting to read this perspective. I just never would have thought of it as rude. It more felt like a late-night party...I would never want to be offending, so I will just "stay home" from now on.

There have ben some hijackings that clearly have been for fun and you can tell from the author's comments that they are enjoying it as well. The linking is another story all together and not nice etiquette at all.

I have participated in a MEMBERS ONLY post that was jacked.  And I'll do it again.  It's in good fun, not always in good taste maybe, but in good fun.  If the poster doesn't like it they have a delete button and I would NEVER do it on a public post.  I would also NEVER advertise my services in a comment.  That being said.  Ever member comment has a link back to the person who writes it if they are logged in.  That's part of the system.  And it's a way I've found many interesting people on ActiveRain.

We already advertise ourselves when we leave a comment but if the person posted a hyperlink and/or an icon with a hyperlink then I can understand how annoying those type of comments can be. I am fortunate in that I write solely for customers and clients and do not make Members Only posts. I like it that way because it helps deter drama. Life is so much better without drama.

Some people here welcome hyperlinks upon hyperlinks of others. Some even allow icons with hyperlinks. It's difficult to tell but I prefer to just leave a comment without pushing additional hyperlinks to myself and/or icons with hyperlinks to myself. It can be difficult though because some people welcome it while others are annoyed by it. To each his or her own but if this was done to me in a *members only* post then it would not warrant much. However if it happened to me in a public post then I would consider deleting these types of arguments with icons with hyperlinks of someone else in the same industry trying to belittle someone else while trying to elevate themselves but it's your blog. As long as you follow the TOS you can do what you want with the comments. Take care, Lana

I agree with the person above.  Define Hijacking.  I have at times disagreed with a persons post and stated why.  I've never posted a link.  I did a post where I asked questions and a guy gave a long response pitching his business.  I was not offended, he answered my question, or at least he felt his business was the answer.  He offered me a discount and I mean to take him up on it.

Darin:

You have raised an issue that has plagued AR, and probably other blog sites, for some time.

The protocol is not always clearly defined, but it seems that if it feels wrong, or looks wrong, then it is. There is plenty of opportunity for folks to write their own posts, and blatantly advertise themselves if they must. The purpose of the comment seems to be to add to the conversation, question it, or somehow add value by offering a different perspective.

When it becomes negative, obnoxious, rude, derogatory or the writer is clearly taking on their own soapbox, then it probably exceeds the boundaires of what is appropriate and acceptable. As writers, we have the right, I think, to decide when that occurs. One does not want to delete things that we don't agree with necessarily, since that can add tremendous value to a discussion, but we also don't need to publicly allow ourselves to be subjected to rudeness.

Hello,

I read this post and I noticed something that maybe is of the subject of hi-jacking the blog but is very disturbing to me.What is it? The sign itself about Hi-Jacking Hot Spot.Where did you find it? If this is reality of US today I certainly don't want to go back there and I don't want to buy property there but I appreciate you letting me know.

Wow, I don't know where that last comment came from. I've noticed that in the comments they are talking about two different types of Hi-Jacking.

I agree with you that someone trying to be the expert on your post and linking to their own info is way out of bounds. The other fun one really shouldn't have anything to do with this.

The self promotion with a catchy little phrase, a link to themselves on Twitter, their website, etc. a personal logo with an embedded link....I don't think of hijacking on my posts... mostly because it gets ignored and then deleted (usually the following day so they can't get points if it was 1 of 10 identical comments they left "efficiently" which is a generic cut and paste comment. )  I am pretty good about going back to delete.  Offensive yes, but I don't think of  it as hijacking....

I was at a fancy restaurant reading your post and the comments at dinner last night on my phone (addicted?) when I was alone at the table for a few minutes ....  and I remembered a post of mine that got hijacked here by another company that sells blogs to the real estate industry.  I shut down the comments because I had asked the satisfied customers and real estate gurus who were hawking the product to "cease and desist" but they chose to continue to try to leave infomercials about how great their real estate blogs are.... I had that happen previously with a real estate website vendor and his satisfied customers.  At the time I don't think we could close down the comments.

I have just re-posted my original post about HiJacking/RainJacking. I hope it will help clear up some of this confusion. I think the point is this ...don't use the hard work of SOMEONE ELSE to promote yourself. It's that simple.

The blog belongs to the writer. Some have suggested that it is petty for a content creator to disallow blatant advertising on their posts.

A commentator is a guest on someone else's blog, and your suggestion of emailing for permission is a wonderful courtesy and is very respectful, and I like the idea.

Great post, very thoughtfully done. I'm glad that it was featured!

I usually jack people who welcome the playtime, so it's not unwelcome to a lot of folks. We always give the writer a heads up in the comments so as not to embarrass them. So, although I enjoyed your post, you're missing the flip side of the coin. Friends are not ashamed to prank friends and give them exposure by sending hundreds of people and comments to their blog. Rain-jacking can be a sign of affection or an atta boy, atta girl for a post well done. Club Chaos is very social and we high-jack our members all the time. When we jack non-members, we invite them to become members. We go live in AR like its our own personal twitter stream. Sometimes we stay on topic and other times we don't. It just depends upon the mood of the piece and how serious the discussion is going. You can learn a lot from people by how they jack a blog because sometimes we do it so seriously you don't even know I sent the whole crew over to welcome you. All jacks are not frivolous. They can make for a very educational discussion. Come on over to our group page. We're jacking one right now on the same subject of your post because you inspired us (LOL). I hope you will accept our invitation to see an affectionate jacking in progress (LOL). Come play in Club Chaos with us today. You'll discover we sent people over here already to comment on your post. I love irony... :-)

It makes me wish I was that influential. When I get there I will ask the advice of the veterans here. There are a million original topics to blog on so don't copy and paste. Plus, if you dedicate yourself to your marketing and your blogging craft, you don't need to hijack a post with your comments. On controversial post, especially if they have extreme religious or political bias, I count to ten, and then realize that a boycott is preferable to inflaming a riot.

Some people just need drama in their lives to feel important and needed.  ONe of my posts encouraged a lengthy debate, and one gentleman actually called and apologized for someone else "hijacking" my post that he was in a debate with.  The other guy was defending me and my post and the gentleman that called was demeaning me(on another blogsite that the guy defending me told me about).  I enjoyed the drama for what it was worth and moved on.

  1. for fun
  2. for debate

Links, on the other hand, are just not cool.  I have sent several AR members emails telling them that their links are not well received, and usually the offender is a new member that has no clue that what they did was wrong.  I try to help educate so that no one else gets offended.

Regina- Sorry took me so long to get to you!  I am pretty okay with TLW's blog and definitions!  Let me clear ONE THING UP THO.. I have not been hijacked truly yet, and I dont consider ANYTHING in this blog hijacking.  I welcome ALL comments too, and to date, have not deleted ANYONE's comment ever on one of my blogs! I too, Many times have emailed questions, comments, suggestions, and normally in a VERY VERY polite way!  Even as Sarah Lamm said ON TLW's blog, I emailed Sarah with a brief question, BEFORE I responded to her comments!  She has since even sent ME a very very good and polite email back explaining HERSELF!  That is AWESOME!

I wasnt going to actually STATE examples, but I will state ONE FOR THE RECORD!!!!  Stewart Penn, did a blog on another Realestate company.  A person FROM that Realestate company, came on his blog, and started answering HIS blog commentors questions!@  Now, to me...SUPER SUPER UNCOOL!  That is, unless, he had gotten Stewarts permission to do so!  This nice guy, EVEN SAID IN HIS BLOG COMMENTS that what he was doing could be conceived as HIJACKING Stewarts blog!  In my humble opinion, he should have emailed Stewart, asked him if HE could respond..and within the BLOG THREAD or even in the BLOG, Stewart could have said.."Im gonna let bla blah answer your questions, as he is from such and such company!!"....That way, all readers KNOW what was happening, and can appreciate the perspective alot more!  I have not always AGREED with Stewart, in fact, I argued with him one time..HOWEVER< that doesnt mean I wouldnt stick up for him or bash someone who is hijacking his, or anyone's blog!  What is right is right.  WHat is wrong is wrong!  Yes, it is that simple!

There is a huge difference between discussion, debate, arguement, suggestion, and citing experiences   and hijacking, selling YOUR SERVICE directly through the readership of someone else's blog, and or trying to upstage them, or show them up!! BIG difference!  There are people Regina that have answerd/commented on this blog, that I have seen do this!  I wil not mention them!  I too professional for that!-   Thank you very much!  I really apppreciate your getting this question out there!  As you can see thru the thread, many people had the same question!

Broker Bryant-  YOu made some of the best points really...you did.  I have turned about 6 difference negatives into positive since I HAVE been in the RAIN too!  I LOVE doing that!  In fact, one of the people I have come to really like now!!   Linking is so easy to do...quick question or email...get the okay,, and it is done!  Thanks for sharing! -  D

Steven at AR!- Totally rockin that you commented!  Thanks!  Tell Bob, this is one more reason we need a Active Rain Message Board!  :)    You can post YOUR links any time!  LOL...Thanks man!

Mara-  Here is a very interesting suggestion to YOU and to CLUB CHAOS and to Active Rain! Wouldnt it be nice to have a Active Rain Clubhouse, or CHAT ROOM??? what I think you, Club Chaos and others are actually TALKING ABOUT, is not hijacking a blog...It is more chatting within a group within someone's blog!  This is more chatroom type material, but until AR has a place/forum for this..we will all have to make do!  I dont consider what you are talking about as Hijacking in ANY way!!!  Keep it up..and come back often!@  I appreciate you!

Barb-  The linking thing is a big issue for me!  We all work hard to get our name out there, our readership etc...when someone tries to piggyback that...it is more than likely OKAY...just check with me first!!  Maybe I dont want to be associated with you, or vice versa...and you know what...that is okay too!!! :)  Thank you...please come back again!-  D

Tammy L-  Again, I think what you are referring to, is NOT hijacking, and again..is more like a chat room ...if we had one!  Keep it up!  I think that is awesome! Key part of your comment was that EVERYONE links back!  That is really really important!  TEAM & UNITY!  That is NOT HIJACKING!!!

I have no problem with people posting links or photos in my blog as long as they are on topic and appropriate. I have never deleted comments -- except for SPAM and one that was mean spirited/nasty.

Gary W-  I know one day I will probably have to hit delete...and actually there is one out of sorts comment on here...but I think the person who left the comment already did more damage than I could do by deleting them!  LOL....I am a positive person, not negative!  Soo...I will remember your sage advice, and hope to never invoke it!  -  Thank you for commenting!

Candice-  DO you want to direct the AR realtiy show?? Twist & turns huh??  I nominate you as director, and TLW can be the producer!! :)

Lana-  You bring up an AWESOME point...thank you!  I once spoke to another long time RAINER, and we talked about WHY people /a few person's attack her..consistently...she responded like this..." I dont write for him, or for consumers"...I write for Realtors, other mortgage lenders, and professionals in the industry on AR and elsehwere!"    HENCE< your point, well taken, is that it really ALSO DOES depend on WHO your audience is...and truly, other people here, or otherwise shoudnt care!  It is up to YOU who you write to!  Thank you very much! - Darin

Gene-  YOu know, I think after a time, we all get to know each other here..and there is a common BOND or trust!  For example, you have probably commented on my blogs 7-10 times..IF YOU, Lenn Harley, etc...ever wanted to post a link...that would be AWESOME!  All that would do is be a positive in my eyes!  But again, I made 2 quick suggestions at the end of my blog, and I even followed ONE of my own!   IN a nutshell I think Hijacking is:

Selling YOUR SERVICE directly through the readership of someone else's blog, and or trying to upstage them, or show them up!!  In addition, trying to get off topic, or manipulate someone else blog topic for your personal gain or benefit!  Does that helpl!  I always appreciate your comments!  Thanks...Darin

Karen M...I think TLW, as well as our newer esteemed colleauge from AR helped with your question!  Btw- do you think you have ever been hijacked??  Thanks for sharing!  You are always welcome!

Darin...

Just got your email. You're welcome and thank you for bringing the topic up. AR grows so fast it's hard to keep up and explain these things to Newer Member's. Since the earliest days of AR there's been RainJacking. It's a wonderful way for Member's to get to know each other better. You can tell a lot about a person by their sense of humor or lack of :)

The Great Sardini-  You know, I need your obscure wit this morning!  Thank you!  I LOVE YOU MAN!  -  You can spam my posterior ponzi any time!  LOL

Lane Bailey-  You know, Lenn Harley once said, (actually she always says)...that all blogs should be public and not Members only as an option.  I have thought about that...and I go back n forth!  Again, I think it comes back to who we are blogging for, and who we THINK our audience is.  In my case, I ALWAYS make my blogs public, because most of them are sales tip oriented, updates for Realtors on loan program changes, and I try to sell myself as an idea machine!@  That said...I havent experienced the true "negative person" yet..!  I am lucky!  Thank YOU for sharing!  - D

Matt- Well, I got the Scarecrow picture off of flicker, and ther was nothing about copywright.  Due to your comment, I changed it out, just in case! ..I do think you are right, in that it probably isnt as frequent as we have members here in the RAIN..However, it is nice when people of experience and long term STATURE here,....comment...as many of the commentors on this blog have massive followings!  The commentors here alone, spurned a now FEATURED BLOG by TLW!  That is great!  IT is working!  Things like this, make it easier for us all to understand!  Thanks..and please visit again!

Roland...YEP, you are right!  I have seen what I would consider about 12 different hijackings within the last 45 days or so..None were funny tho!  One guy in particular, IN HIS COMMENTS completed changed the subject and sold HIS OWN business!  The blog author, never even came back and commented ON THE COMMENTS!  So..in the end, who is guilty??  Ive only been doing this a year, AR that is...but after 20 yrs in the mtg industry, you get pretty good at identifying the bullshitters!  LOL..Thanks as always!@- D

JEFF DOWLER - Extremely well put!  That is why IN MY BLOG, I put....that is is annoying when people who AUTHOR a blog...dont' go back in and respond to the comments!  MUCH of the learning COMES THROUGH THE THREAD!  That is also WHY it is so important NOT TO allow HIJACKING!  ...It is detrimental to the basic fundamentals of blogging!....which is LEARNING!  Thank you so much!- D

Connie Harvey- I think the "other type" of hijacking could be best described as just "discussion", and should have a different place...Like a CHAT ROOM!  Hopefully, AR is listening...Dont you think a CHAT room would be a great thing for CLUB CHAOS, or other smaller groups here in the RAIN to set up...?? Throught the website?? It can't be that hard!  -  Easier to think big when you are controllable in size!  Right now...AR is growing at about 200 members per day!  :)  Thanks so much! -D

Michael Perry-  I have seen that as well..I actually have been privately emailed by about 5 different people that state they see this on ZILLO alot...I am not a member over there..and not sure if it would help me being a lender or not...Dont know too much about them...but what I have heard, I havn't like!  I am a member at Trulia though, and I go on once a day and answer questions posted by consumers!  IT NEVER ceases to amaze me at the thoughtless ,moronic comments that are put on there, by people who dont have a clue!  In the end, KARMA is huge!  Thanks !  KW rules by the way!...D

LOL  -  Well put in your comments, and great followup!  I will and do, always appreciate YOUR input!  Thank you!  People dont have to agree with me for me to like them, or for them to like me!  THE ONLY THING I HAVE EVER ASKD ANYONE, was to APPRECIATE my side of things or opinion!  In any case, I actually have PERSONALLY been accused of getting "off topic before", so the blog comments etc...are REALLY important to me too..because I AM HERE TO LEARN AS WELL!  I am not an expert, nor do I have expertise!  I am smart tho...and can read people very well!  I think AR moving forward has to think about some things too! Thanks again !  D

TLW-  Thanks for the sharing and the LINK LOVE!  I appreciate it!  What you did by commenting and the your REDUX was not even REMOTELY hijacking!  It was playing OFF OF my blog, and answering questions through YOUR OWN!  AWESOME!  APPRECIATE IT!  And, thank you for your efforts!

C TANN STARR-  Welcome to MY BLOG!   Actually , I respectfully, DISAGREE with you.  I dont think EITHER of us is wrong, nor do we have to look at the FLIPSIDE of the coin.  I think, what your "team" does could have a better place for what you do...actually...As I mentioned above, much of what YOU DO, is talking through someone's blog.  This could be also accomplished in a CHAT ROOM!  I personally think that would be an AWESOME IDEA for AR to get put in place!  I will ALWAYS welcome comments, Rainjacking as you say...from your, club Chaos, or anyone for that matter!  however, I am merely stating that mabye there is a little better place for it!  In my case, I publish more updates on programs, selling ideas, etc..etc..etc...so many of my blogs are NOT contraversial!
Yes, you are right, bringing along 100 new people to someones blog is a GREAT IDEA!  If you did that to me...I would send you an email...with a big THANK YOU!!!  So please do!  I will visit, and will comment!  I promise!  Thanks for sharing...your view is appreciated!  - Darin

Lane- Gotcha!  Thanks for clarifying...I went back and re - read..just in case!  Sorry about that!  I figured that is what you meant...but it is nice for others to see too!  It has been strange for ME personally, because I for whatever reason...dont get very many public comments at all!  But again, I NORMALLY blog about important info for Realtors etcc...so...not really targeting that!  I was just thinking bout this tonite, and think the landscape will change a little bit now, ...because some of the blogs WILL always be public...unless the new people pay the monthly fee...(if I am getting that straight)..please, correct me if I am wrong!  As this gets bigger and bigger, it is now more important than ever to develop a solid following, and blog about GOOD content!  This blog here, was a result of too many people having crappy things done to them! Gratefully, I havn't fallen into that cateogory yet...Not sure what they could do about the public stuff..as I have learned there are just BLOG BASHERS out there...that have nothing else to do in their miserable lives!  I do have other things to do...like SOLID BUSINESS with GOOD , POSITIVE people!!

RainJacking is a service and trade mark of TLW and can not be used by anyone. Violates her copyright.

High-jacking is the same as rain jacking except all members can high-jack but only TLW can Rainjack. When she puts her stamp of approval on the ActiveRain high-jinx and shenanigans, that's one of the original members of the network putting her stamp of approval on the art and craft of a high jack well done.

I do not want there to be a misconception about that fact. The RainJack icon was specifically designed for The Lovely Wife. No one can use it without facing copyright sanctions. You haven't been rainjacked unless TLW says your post has been. When we do high-jack a post we are always hoping we do it well enough to be graced with the coveted stamp of approval. :-)

Comment spam, which your post has described, is being confused with high-jacking, which TLW provides the history of and ActiveRain members definition. She was one of the founders of the art of jacking a blog. I am a third generation high-jacker on the ActiveRain Real Estate Network. Very proud of that distinction because TLW taught Amanda Hall and Melody Botting and those two taught me.

There are rules of engagement to an acceptable and unacceptable high-jack. Interchanging RainJacking with high-jacking is a no-no to those who understand the difference. These are very distinct things.

Interchanging comment spam with high-jacking concerns me. If you read the community rules on comment spam posted by the firm who hosts us you will see the distinction. If you click on the red blog post flag button you will also notice ActiveRain has an option to flag a post for a feature because of high-jinx. The ActiveRain groups Jacked, Wacked, Club Chaos and a host of others devote ourselves to having fun in the Rain and periodically high-jacking blog posts to socialize together on. That's why our icon is a social butterfly (LOL).

I read every comment here and thought it important to point out there are subtle differences. People should be aware that regardless of all of our personal opinions on the matter, the terms RainJack, RainJacked, RainJacking are actually a copyright service and trade mark not for indiscriminate, casual use. Think of it like getting an Emmy or Oscar. If the firm that grants them doesn't nominate and award you one, do not misrepresent and say it happened or you got RainJacked. That custom made ActiveRain stamp is the same as those statues. It's a blog award from Roar Productions ownd by Broker Bryant and Billie Bryant. TLW will confirm this statement is correct. So will Jeff Turner, who specifically created the graphics for it for her exclusive use. It's only fitting. She created the ActiveRain tradition of jacking a blog with her friends. ;-)

Hi Darin - I haven't written posts here on AR in some time, however I think we should all use common sense when it comes to putting links in someone else's post.  Unless you got their permission to do so, don't do it.  Simple as that - I don't understand why so many either don't get it or refuse to get it, and they go on and leave their links and all their promotional junk all over the posts they comment on.

I have emailed people directly when they've done it to my posts, and if they don't delete the link, I delete the comment.  I do give them time and I explain why in my email directly to them.  Some members here on AR have signatures that are far longer than many posts, and to see those in the comments on posts all over AR clearly shows a thumbing of their nose at the community guidelines here that they agreed to abide by when they became a member.

If a competitor comes onto one of my posts and puts their links in the comments - they either remove the link or their comment is gone, AFTER having given them ample opportunity to remove the link themselves.  I don't walk into a competitor's office advertising my services, etc., doing so on someone's post is the same thing - don't do it.

Ann

Your post has started an interesting discussion.  I enjoyed reading all of the comments and your responses.  I had never really understood the difference between hijackingand rainjacking.  However we really don't need a lot of rules.  It still comes down to that old life staple - do unto others.  If you wouldn't want it done to you; don't do it.

I don't nor would do it, I guess by reading this long blog that Lenn told me what Hi jacking was in the first sentence of here reply. The thing about rules as with laws is the explanation is so long that with my small brain I can't figure out what the was. Why make anything complicated.

Hijacking is advertising and or linking to another site or yourself, end of post. I don't really care if people hi jack mine I am just not that into it or that important sorry. When I start getting paid for it I will probably feel different.

If Short all you Hi Jackers just come to my post and knock your self out.

Sandra, here are the ActiveRain Community Rules.

Here's a short set of fave ActiveRain quotes that I spend a lot of time writing and chatting about when I'm not playing in the Rain:

"Being a part of any community requires a certain level of trust. Don't abuse the site or your fellow members. By joining the ActiveRain community you are given a platform to present your ideas and opinions to a large number of people. We trust you to be responsible with that platform; thousands of other ActiveRain members are also counting on your trustworthiness.

* The ActiveRain community and real estate industry as a whole will only be respected to the degree of character represented by the actions of it's professionals. Do not conduct yourself in a way that disgraces your fellow member's on this network.

* Do not take malicious action against the network.

* Do not advertise yourself or your services in the comment section of another members blog post.

* Do not personally attack another person.

* Do not slander another person.

* Do not send unsolicited emails, or faxes, or make unsolicited phone calls to another member."

Group Founders, Administrators and Moderators who are serious about their responsibilities and active in their groups take the community rules of the network very seriously. We love ActiveRain and when we form groups and work across the blogosphere together to advance our concerns and causes, we spend a lot of time recreational reading to monitor where our group dynamics are going. Comment spam is always annoying to deal with... Sometimes it is accidental and people don't understand what it is, so they put their spin on why it is okay when it is not and we have to work twice as hard to educate them why it's wrong.

If the owner of the post gives permission for a link to be there, or if the link is to further enhance the conversation, it is not the same as people who run around blatantly advertising their stuff at the expense of another writer. All links are not comment spam and randomly accusing writers of it is always offensive to the writer who is not engaging in the practice. I say practice because a lot of people do this and will immediately point to someone else doing it as an example as to why it is okay.

Members need to read the community guidelines and the examples and explanations given by ActiveRain rather than make up their own definitions. Just because I trade links with my friends doesn't mean I trade links with everyone. The relationships people cultivate here will determine the permissive will of the writers. Some people like links and will actually ask for them (like I do at times) and others wont tolerate a single one, even if it is to help explain the answer to a question, because they feel it takes traffic away from their post. Their post is about advertising their business and ideology.

Each writer must moderate their blog and determine what is best for them. Each founder must moderate their group and determine its purpose and membership criteria. I hope this explanation has been useful to you. Regards, C. :-)

Good post. Timely as the issue does not go anywhere. There are always some Members who have their own agenda. I found myself a few times, when I would comment on those comments, openly saying that they were hijacking.

Only once this was an innocent mistake, and the blogger turned out to be a very nice gentleman. Others were defensive trying to impose themselves as the saviors of the nation.

What a petty BS.

The cure is in our response to that. If it is our post, delete them, and not comment, not engage, as that is exactly what the need. Just not notice them.

C- Tann-  Thank you for the highly detailed and lengthly explanations!  One nice thing is that it will forever be IN my blog...so you, or any commentor, or ME, can cut & paste it RIGHT INTO anybody eles's retort!  No worries!  Thanks...

I do have one quick thing tho...TLW might have copywrighted and patented the RAINJACK ICON, but my suggestion would be for her to also do the words/wording!  I searched it as part of my normal INVESTIGATIVE WORK, and there hasn't even been an application applied for!  I didn't search the ICON because I personally have no need to!  I look at the ICON as almost an "award" like you!  It is TLW's to present!

Im sure she appreciates your loyal defense!!!  :)  - Bucky

Ann-Remax-  Well said, and very thoughtful!  I appreciate it..and like you..I do almost the exact same things!!!  I will take this opportunity tho for a "shameless" plug!  I did a blog on Condos some time ago..and I noticed in your profile you have CONDO"s as one of your main focus benefits!  I would def read my blog on this!  We have had MANY changes in this arena, and I will be doing a new blog this week on other changes, and detailing a situation that is "REAL" and happend to one of my customers!   again, well put, and thank you very much!  Please come back often!-   I appreciate you!-  D

Pam-  THANK YOU BIG TIME for what you just said!  YOU GOT IT!!  What i mean is that you read the comments, and it was VERY NICE of you for stating you read MY COMMENTS!  Thank you again!  This is very important to me personally, because as I have said...much of the learning (which goes both ways) comes thru the thread!  Questions & answers are REALLY important in the learning process!  Please visit again, or subscribe!  I appreciate your reading!  -  Darin

Service Marks and Trade Marks aren't the same as Registered Trade Marks, Bucky. (LOL).

SM, TM, and R are three different things belonging to different databases and different levels of protection in the law. SM and TM are usually copyrighted and people who want to go one step further will patent and register their SM and TM into R (Registered Trade Mark).

It is up to the service mark holder to decide how and when to use their intellectual rights and when to establish more rights or restrictions for their holdings. That is why if there is a question we always tell people to consult with their attorney or contact the owners directly for permission or clarification.

That is also why when people sometimes interchange the use of a phrase (as if it is universal when it is not) that people who know the difference take a step back and say whoa there. Hold up a minute. We are crossing a line into the intellectual rights of others while playing in the digital divide. :-)

It is important that we all be very careful. We don't get a free pass for violating another person's copyright. I  own quite a few SMs an TMs and am quite serious about defending them. So I try to be respectful of other people's intellectual rights as well and always keep an eye out for my friends because they keep an eye out for me and my intellectual collection of stuff. I'm glad you found the explanations useful. Happy to be of help. :-)

I hope she edits it into a registered mark. That would be lovely. I'm with you 100% on that one. ;-)

C TANN-  THANK YOU!@!!   Sorry, I NEVER CLAIMED EVER to be an expert on this!! LOL  One thing to know about me...is that sometimes I will play the fool, in order for someone like YOU to place the explanation!!!  It is my secret evil plan!! :)

Oh, and we are diverting now from the point of my bloody blog!  Hold the line!!!! :)

I know Lenn Harley and others have actually had MATERIAL stolen, reblogged, and used....and they SUED!!!  I think that is awesome actually...I went to a small college that kicked people out for plagarism!  I was an english major in college, so I do take MY writing VERY seriously!

Stay on subject matter tho!!!   Thanks!!!  - Your new pal...Bucky

Charles Stallions-  I absolutely get the gist of what you are saying...and agree with you...Some people are just making too much out of it...when in the end it is pretty basic!  I continue to be surprised at the lack of understanding that there ARE rules to follow!  You know, most websites...etc...have something you sign that says something like...."I AGREE" etc...most people dont read that, but should...they just click it!  AR I think should take on a more proactive role regarding the RULES and plagarism, as well as Hijacking!  I have suggested two things to Bob already and received a couple of VERY NICE EMAILS in return!  1.  Main page message board for Members  2.  An active Rain CHAT ROOM....

Both would be awesome ...and solve a few of the issues we continute to see pop up on a daily basis!  I had to laugh at your last sentence, because soliciting hijackers to come to your blog could be considered hijacking hijackers!  :)

I see the TLW has already been here and most of the time it is not bothered by the person who posted the blog and we have always asked permission prior to doing so. I can see what you are saying, but half the time, the poster is involved in the hijacking. I've been hijacked a few times by TLW and I always welcome her.

Hey there Todd!

Thanks for stopping by!  You know, I think the whole HIJACK thing is a little misunderstood!  It is one thing if it is for the learning, but simply another if they are "hocking their wares" amongst your developed followers!

Also, I hadnt heard the phrase, RAIN JACK...so that has been interesting too!  I do think it is VERY IMPORTANT TO MENTION that if the blog author doesnt bother to address the commentors, they are just as much at fault at getting hijacked!  I actually THOUGHT i had hijacked a guy once, because he was NOT comemnting back...and he had brought up a VERY serious issue!  I emailed him, and begged him to comment..until, I couldnt take it anymore!  TOO MUCH BAD INFO!  Had to quell it...later, he okay'd me, which was cool!  -  Thanks again!-  Darin

Darin - I really like your idea of asking for permission first before adding a link in a blog comment. Someone did that to me not too long ago and I thought it was very low class...

Hey there Christianne!

Thanks..I agree.  Odd thing, and the challenge is that EVERYONE seems to have just a little different opinion on this!

Some people, even LENN HARLEy, allow anyone to link at any time...obviously unless you are selling Nike Shoes, or one of our other illustrious SPAM LINKERS!!! -   Glad you enjoyed it!

Darin:

Posting a link is verboten.

Hawking your wares is, too.

But don't you think the rest of this is a little like "beauty" (or maybe "ugly") -- i.e. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Or maybe it's like "pornography":  The High Court can't define it...they just know it when they see it.

Or do I have to get your permission before I disagree with you.

Oops...I just did...and didn't.  Shame on me.

Jim-  GREAT COMMENTS!  VERBOTEN...i just burst out laughing because you couldnt be more right>.>and yes, I do agree with you to SOME DEGREE that the rest is open to interpetation!

Most eductated, quality bloggers, LIKE IT WHEN PEOPLE DISAGREE!!!  HOWEVER, what we talk about alot in my personal "group" here on Active Rain is that when someone disagrees with you...they need to make their point strongly and based on fact.  And MOST IMPORTANTLY give us all the facts!  you never know, you might sway ME, and have ME change my opinion...but not unless you base YOURS on FACT today!  You know what they say about opinions....  LOL

We enjoy quality debates!  One problem lies though when someone like you, takes TIME out of their day...(which I appreciate) to leave a comment, and then the BLOG AUTHOR doesnt retort??  It is a thread killer, and kind of in a way ruins the string of the blog!  I think commentors who dont go back to see the response are just as guilty as the AUTHORS that dont retort!

Thanks...and please, come back often!  -  Darin

Darin, I came here via Sara Woodford & Steve Golson's blog on hijacking blogs.  I hadn't experienced this yet (hope I don't) but I find it very fascinating.  And I'm amazed at what people think is acceptable online that hopefully they wouldn't do in person.
