Do You Want to be the "Featured Member" Here's Some POINTS!

There is only "ONE WAY" you can be the featured member.  It's Points!  You have to have the most points... period!  It is not based on your successes, your experience, your moral or ethical values, it's all based on points.  I will tell you from personal experience, that points don't get you leads, and points will not get you referrals, it's the content of your Blog that is the most important of all.  However, points do determine where you are placed both on ActiveRain and on Localism.com.

If you are not in the top 10, you will not show up on Localism.com in your area.  If you are not on the first page in your area, will you get lost in the crowd?  How do you get enough points to be in the #1 spot in your area? Maybe even just being in the top 10 could be to your benefit!  Let me say this, you're going to have to work very hard.  How hard, depends on how many members there are in your area, where you want to be, and where you are now on the totem pole.

This is the best way I know to help you become the number one "Featured Member" in your area.  I owe this post to the guests I've invited.  Here is the recipe for your success on ActiveRain based strictly on points:

  • First, your profile page is the starting point and foundation for your initial points. I quote the FAQ section that states, "We've incorporated a unique scoring system into the ActiveRain Real Estate Network to reward contributing members. When you create your profile it is automatically scored based on thoroughness, and also will be manually scored by a reviewer for quality." Build your profile as you would your own webpage.  Remember, a web-page will pass away when you do, but your Blogs live on forever!!

  • Point Summary - By checking your points summary the first time (located on your "My Home" page), you will automatically be given 50 points.  there are some other "secret" areas on ActiveRain that will award points so click around on everything and explore.  Navigation on the rain is the key to getting around quickly and efficiently.

  • Invite others to ActiveRain- When they join, you'll get 50 points and then 10% of all their points forever.  There are various ways to invite others, be sure to use the "referral link"when doing this.  You must use this link to get the points.  Then help those you've invited to be successful Bloggers, it helps their business, and gets you more points.

  • Add Links to ActiveRain from your other websites.  There are big points there. To do this is very simple. Click here for the details on creating ActiveRain links on your other websites.

  • You must Blog!  You get 200 points for every post you place on your Blog.  Make it a good post, because you'll get 1 additional point for every comment made.  You are allowed 10 posts per week.  If your post is selected as a "Featured Post" on ActiveRain, you'll get 400 points plus 1 additional point for every comment made.  Content is king, so put some thought and effort into your posts.

  • Commenting on others Blogs and posts.  You are rewarded 25 points every time you comment on someone else's Blog.  You are allowed up to 10 comments a day.  That's an additional 250 points per day.  If you comment on theirs, they'll comment on yours.  These are the most important points of all.  You will learn from other members, and establish great relationships in the process.

  • Uploading Photos to Localism.com.  You used to get 100 points for the first photo to an area, 50 points for the next 10 photos, and 25 points for any photos after that. This has been changed due to the mass amounts of photos that were being uploaded just for points.  The quality was over-run by quantity. There are no points available for uploading photos, but there is the benefit of sharing "Quality Photos" of your area with visitors and viewers.  Plus, when someone sees "Your" photo, it has your name and links them back to you. USE ONLY YOUR BEST QUALITY PHOTOS for uploading.

  • Helping Other Members gets bonus points.  When ActiveRain sees examples of members helping each other they may reward you points. This could be just answering questions, making referrals, etc.

  • Promoting Active Rain.  If you promote ActiveRain,  let them know and they'll reward you with points for it. For example writing about AR in your off-site Blog, adding a link, or mentioning them in one of your marketing pamphlets, etc. ActiveRain rewards creativity.

  • Contests and Challenges:  From time to time, you will find various contests put on by ActiveRain and it's members.  In many cases, there are points awarded for the winners. See examples:
(and sometimes you'll get points at random for acts of kindness to others in the community.)

All this to say, if you create a post, (get featured), comment on 10 posts each day, that's a potential of 650+ points a day. My disclaimer on all of this is that it's about quality, not quantity.  Remember that readers and other members will be able to tell if you're just after points,  based on the time and effort you put into your work here.  You can have the best of both worlds if you do it right.

Here is MY POINT!  To become the featured member in your area, and to use ActiveRain as a tool to increase your business, your network, and be successful, you need to become skilled in the art of Blogology.  You have to become a blogger, and just Blog, Blog, BlogYou will get out of it, only what you put into it!

Good "points!"  Ha ha... I crack myself up!  Anyway, this was very helpful and there are some things here I' haven't figured out yet, so thanks for the great tips.

"Points don't get you leads"-- Brad

Well said Brad...I couldn't agree more!

06/01/2007 04:38 PM by Ricardo Bueno - Mortgage Planner (World Wide Credit Corporation)

Yes, Brad.  Agree to all your points.  One of our cohorts in this group compared blogging to being in a marathon.  Instead of putting one foot in front of the other, you put one post in front of the other and , as you said, blog, blog blog (and I AM getting some nice leads and referrals from this).

06/01/2007 04:56 PM by Joan Snodgrass Tri-Lakes Realtors, Shell Knob, MO (Tri- Lakes REALTORS)

Brad you are creating blogging point monsters! Just kidding. It's hard to keep up with all of it and still run a business and your life. Most women have no problem multi-tasking....LOL

06/01/2007 09:22 PM by Lizette Fitzpatrick, Lexington KY Real Estate (Central Kentucky - Prudential Don Foster - Richmond KY)

Hey it's me again. I can't figure out how to load pics on localism. If I log in there & click on KY pictures this is what is there:

Notice: Photos can no longer be uploaded at the state or county level. City/Community photos now show now in states also.

Am I missing something? Help!

06/01/2007 09:30 PM by Lizette Fitzpatrick, Lexington KY Real Estate (Central Kentucky - Prudential Don Foster - Richmond KY)

Lizette...they can only be put in at the city or town level now!

06/02/2007 03:47 AM by TOP MORTGAGE COMPANY

I hate to sound stupid but I thought AR brought the posts to localism.  Am I supposed to be posting under there as well?  Sometimes it comes up but often it doesn't......and I've been on here long enough to know (better!)

06/02/2007 05:09 AM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

Donna - you don't have your work cut out for you, you have your FUN cut out for you!!

Joan - leads and referrals are at the TOP of the list of Great things that come from Active Rain and blogging.  One post in front of the other, brings great rewards!!  Thanks you for stopping by here to share.

Lizette - Tell me about it...I can hardly find the time to multi-task anything these days.  This post is just my way of helping some of the members get how it all works...you know..."point" them in the right direction.

06/03/2007 01:09 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Lizette - Joan is right, you can only upload photos at the City, Community, or Neighborhood level.  They no longer allow uploading at the County or State level.  Let me know if you need help ok?   :-)

06/03/2007 02:30 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Carole - your post is pushed to Localism when you check the box to do so.  The photos have to be uploaded directly into Localism from the Localism website.  Your post's are placed on Localism based on which boxes you check, and if you take it all the way down to the County, City or even neighborhood level. Hope that answers your question.  If not, let me know, I can show you how on line.  Thanks!   :-)

06/03/2007 02:34 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Thanks Brad, I've added you as an Associate too -- WooHoo!!!   Oops, I keep saying that -- guess it's one thing Sally & I have in common WooHoo!!!

06/07/2007 12:30 PM by Linda Sanderson (Coldwell Banker Solano Pacific)

Thanks Linda, see..I'm not such a bad guy afterall huh? :-))   This is one of those posts that took me months to learn and grasp, but only minutes to type.  It's one of many I plan to do in a series of posts, to help other members and my customers.  I am gathering posts from all over the rain, and combining them for a "Big Surprise" someday soon.

06/07/2007 08:56 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Hey Brad, catching up on some of your posts here. And Greatttt post!! Blog, Blog, Blog is KEY. I'm still getting use to it, but still trying. Thanks for this post! very informative to me.

06/11/2007 11:55 PM by Luisa Orellana, Escrow Officer, Camden Escrow (Camden Escrow)

I had no idea that you get 10% of referred members points!  That's awesome!  Great tips!  I think I had found most of them already, but the others were handy to know!  I'll be sure to post any new ones I find to help out the AR community.  Someone told me when I joined that it was addictive and I thought "Yeah, right" but everyday now I think "What would be a cool topic to blog about today?"  I don't want to just re-post some news story I read, rather give my take and back it up with good cites.  Thanks again for the tips!

06/12/2007 12:45 AM by John Hurlbut (John L. Scott - Puyallup)

Brad - Sure wish you had posted this several weeks ago :)...I had to learn the hard way!  I'm sure this will be very helpful to new AR'ers (probably some old-timers too!)

06/12/2007 01:16 AM by Joddie Roberts - Your Spokane Realtor - Spokane, WA (Exit Real Estate North)

Brad

Great points and and a wonderful push to get me off center.  I have been building it up but so far haven't made my first post.  I keep wanting to do something great and the desire to do something great is stopping me from doing anything, I need to get off my duff.  Thanks for the motivation.

06/12/2007 01:53 AM by Darrel Quebedeaux (Evergreen Realty & Associates Inc.)

Luisa - Glad you found this post to be informative. Yes, blogging is "key" for all aspects of growth on AR.  Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.  :-)

06/16/2007 11:25 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

John - like you, I am always looking for good topics to post about.  The ones I think are great and I plan out, get the least amount of comments, the ones that come off the cuff and from the heart get the most.  Go figure!!  :-)

06/16/2007 11:27 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Joddie - I hope that ALL AR members will find this to be useful info.  I know (like you), I had to learn the hard way, but sometimes, that IS the best way to learn.  Thank you.  :-)

06/16/2007 11:29 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Darrel - I'll be looking for your first post.  Great is good, but I suggest stop getting ready, and just get going.  There is so much to blog about...just follow your heart, your posts will be GREAT!!   :-)

I added maybe 20 or so neighborhood to localism because our area didn't have any and got no points for this but didn't know I should until I read this blog.

06/21/2007 06:16 AM by Julie Chapman Realty Homes Brunswick Georgia

Thanks Brad for the list. I guess there is still hope for me to reach the front page of my state.

06/21/2007 07:10 AM by Michelle Maddox - Fayetteville Real Estate Agent (Keller Williams)

Julie - If you were logged into AR, and you added neighborhoods, you should have received some points. Click on your "points summary" from your profile page and see if you were credited any points there... :-)

06/21/2007 10:36 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Michelle - there is always hope!!!  :-)  I wish you the very best in reaching ALL your goals, not just here on AR, but in life as well.  Thanks for the comment, enjoy!!

06/21/2007 10:37 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Thanks for the post it will be nice to be featured. One would think it would help your blog a lot.

06/21/2007 11:21 AM by Salt Spring Island real estate agent Scott Simmons (One Percent Realty Vancouver Island)

Scott - being featured does help your blog in that traditionally, featured posts get more comments from my experience.  Thanks for your comment, they're always welcomed and appreciated!

06/21/2007 11:45 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Brad,

I was logged on at the time I added the subdivsions to localism and have checked the points summary.  I got points when I first started for six neighborhoods I added the first week or so I joined.  One afternoon I was home sick and brought our area up to date as no one had ever added any real neighborhoods (just towns).  I added around 20 or more that day if if I recall but did not get any points in my points summary.  It isn't that important but I am very clear on the fact that I am not clear on the scoring on AR. No big deal. But thanks for answering the blog challenged.

06/21/2007 09:41 PM by Julie Chapman Realty Homes Brunswick Georgia

Brad- I learned a lot from this blog, thanks for all of the info. It is going to come in handy

06/22/2007 12:20 AM by Dan Tobias - Northridge Real Estate Expert (Discovery Properties)

Julie, you should report your experience (not the home sick part...LOL) to Active Rain support. They'll check it out and fix it or explain what happen and why.  They are very good about getting back to members with explanations and results!  Need more info for them  CLICK HERE >>>>>>>>  I hope this helps!  :-)

Wow, Brad, what a great post. I hadn't seen this until I was checking in on one of the comments I made to someone "new" on the Rain. I was going to link mine vast array of what I've learned as well, but didn't know if that was okay or not. Guess it is since YOU - the Brad, did it, huh? Good info as usual......

Hi Teri -

I have been asked by one of the moderators to try and help others by "Paying It Forward" with their posts and blogs.  They are looking for posts that have good content, graphics, links, and readability...easy on the eyes.  I am still trying to master this art myself, but many other members need help in this area.  That is why I do my welcome comment to newbies.  I am always trying to help others write "Featurable" posts.  The moderators really need our help in this area, I owe them that!!  Thanks Teri, glad you found this post!

How Ironic, the graphic word below is: PASSION!!  LOL  :-)

Thanks for the help. I am new and this seems to take so much time from prospecting I am not sure if it is worth it?

06/28/2007 12:11 PM by Renee Parrish (RE/MAX Equity Group)

These are super tips and points for me to upgrade my website at Active Rain.  Being new, it is great having someone teaching me to correct way to promote and network.  Thank you for all your help with the new technology and terms.  I look forward to an active "rain" in my real estate world.

06/28/2007 02:05 PM by Sonja Phelps ~REALTOR®~ Metro Brokers-Georgia (Metro Brokers/GMAC Real Estate)

Hi Renee - I think blogging is one of the BEST forms of prospecting in my opinion...the main page of Active Rain states:

The ActiveRain community> </td> <td width=

Welcome to the Community!

We are a free online community for real estate professionals designed to help them promote and grow their business.

I think prospecting and promoting yourself to your clients, readers, potential customers and referrals couldn't get any better than this free service.  Just my opinion.  If it was NOT worth it, would 1500 Real Estate Industry Professionals be joining every week?  That's my opinion, it is your choice! Thanks for the comment, let me know if you would like to read some of the success stories that have come from Active Rain and the blogging efforts of those individuals.  :-)

Sonja - you will find this network and the members to be most helpful and knowledgable.  I'm sure you'll have some success stories soon to share with the rest of us, I am looking forward to the "rain" in your Real Estate world too!  Thanks for your comment!  Enjoy!!

Thanks Brad, I did'nt know about the photo points. But I do have a  question. I noticed on the Florida page, the featured member signed up only a week ago and has 11,000 points, and is featured #2. Can someone please tell me how she accumilated so many points in that short amount
of time. I have been blogging like crazy and I have almost 6000. I've been on AR for about 3 weeks. I might just go ahead and ask her but the problem is she's my competition for Florida. Therefore, she probably won't reveal any secrets.
Thans for any help with this.

07/03/2007 09:24 AM by Callie Thompson Sr. Loss Mitigation Specialist (Keep Your Property, INC)

Callie - The other agent may be cutting and pasting posts, and might be doing only the activities that get points and to the max!  (many of us members can tell) Trust me when I say, IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT POINTS!!  Go for the "BEST" content and look at the Big Picture.  This will "eliminate" some of the others as competitors.  Write for your readers, your community, and your business.  The points will come, and so will the business.  I know it's frustrating to see someone else capitalize on the point thing, but they will come and go!  Just focus on your content, your posts, your comments, your clients and your business!!  These are the "valued roots" of blogging on AR.

Remember, anyone can get 1,000,000 points eventually, but what is your true goal and purpose for blogging on Activerain?.....give it some thought....then boldly go forward and focus on that goal!!   :-)

07/03/2007 11:12 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Thanks Brad for visiting my blog. I am taking the points seriously, but not at the expense of quality content. All my blogs will be my own work.

Incidently, I've moved into 2nd place in Oceanside CA today, my second day!

The people invited recently have had problems with their invitations from me.  I repeat the instructions in my invite. Even so, I have not been credited for their acceptances.  Are those points lost forever?  Those that I invited that I personally assisted in accepting the invite were credited to me.  I don't know what the problam is, but I have already lost points for 5 different invites.

Jeff - you can click on the "Contact Activerain" at the bottom of the lower right hand side of this page.  Just scroll down, click on it, and you're there!  Hope that helps, if not, let me know.

Marie - best of luck to you, it's hard work, but worth it!!  :-)   Regarding your invites, the new member has to link through your invite only!!!  If they just go to Activerain.com and click on join, you or no other member will be credited for that invite.  Click on the link to "Invite Others" from your "Home" page.  It gives pretty clear instructions on how to do this, it still does not guaranty your invitees won't join directly.  Let me know if this helps, or call me and I'll walk you through over the phone.  Thanks Marie, sorry you've had some challenges in that area.  :-)

Brad,

Thank you for your information.  I contacted Active Rain after reading your response and found on yet in another blog that they were no longer giving points for neighborhoods.  That blog also had a link to Active Rain.  Both times I went in through the links - the other blog allowed if I entered between May 28 and June 1 - which is when I did they would correct and give me credit - I got a response that said - sorry no longer given points for adding neighborhoods.

Julie - that's a bummer!  Let's try to close you some deals so we can make up for the point loss!  How can I help you get some business to overcome the dissappointment of not getting these points.  Would a single transaction closing make up for it?  Here to help if you need!  Hope you had a great 4th!!  :-)
