The Story behind these gardens. Pierre Dupont came to this country from France in the early 1800's. He founded the Dupont Chemical factory and created even more wealth. When this property was for sale , he acquired it because it represented one of the largest tree collections to be found in the US. That is just the beginning of the amazing story behind what is seen today as one of the largest Gardens in the world with over 1000 acres of tress, shrubs and flowers. And that doesn't even begin to describe the water features and one of the worlds largest flower and plant Conservatorys. It defies words to describe.

Looks like you enjoy your new camera, and you really have tested it. Did you try a polarizing filter?

My understanding is that in the photo like this it could make the sky pronounced. I am still to try it myself, and I am not thrilled with putting it on and off, because you can't just keep it on the lenses. I am not that devoted to perfection, but maybe you are (LOL).

You got me a teaser. So far no clue, but I am still trying.

Hi Gary, I couldn't get back far enough to get the whole thing but if you look through the trees , you will see even more fountains and the part I liked best were the setps leading down to all this. Here is some of the rest of the picture Gary.

William - Really pretty gardens... Although we've seen enough water here on the east coast as of recently....lol Nice shot though anyways....

Hi Jon, I didn't take the new camera, thus no polarizing filter. I took my little point and shoot. I do regret that I didn't lug the bigger one , especially with photo opportunities like this where, yes, I did need a polarizing filter. This area is so vast and with a point and shoot camera , normally good for more close up, it just couldn't begin to handle the immensity of this place.

This is one of my favorite spots at Longwood. With the Fourth of July coming up - it's a reminder about the spectacular fountain and fireworks displays.

William - Longwood Gardens is amazing, and I have already enjoyed visiting, especially this particular garden. I have visited often, having lived within about 30 minutes for many years. Visiting the Conservatory at Chrismas in the dea of winter was always a treat. Truly incredible what the duPonts built.

William - The landscape is simply stunning!  The steps that lead down to it are absolutely amazing!  It was 108 degrees in Sacramento yesterday, and 107 today.  I wouldn't mind spending my days there until it cools down some.

Hi Susie, You are too funny. But it does make sense, I don't recall seeing many restrooms along the way, LOL. And finding a tree is not a good idea, take a look at what I found under a tree.

Hi Judy, The rest of the story will be a separate post as soon as I locate a good slide show to add the many photos of this place. I did a whole series on the individuals flowers and they were awesome. Take a peak. Is that amazing or what? Something I have never seen before.

Hi Janice, How lucky you are and I saw the ads for it and know I missed the timing by 10 days. It is amazing and I have a collection of fireworks photos from there and they are like nothing I have ever seen before.

Hi Jeff, How fortunate you are to have been able to experience these gardens so many times having lived so near. I could see myself as becoming a weekend docent for family and friends, or at least acting as one :-). I would never tire of it.

Hi Carole, they sure do have a lot of water works besides the fountains. Check this out. It is the water falls ( man made along the Bell Tower). Took this with my iPhone because after 8 hours, my camera battery died. But I couldn't resist not having this photo.

Hi Myrl, If I lived in Sacramento, I would heading to Lake Tahoe at every chance I could get. Not sure I could live in Tahoe but I love the drive from Sacramento. Your temps are like the desert/ It will moderate  but it sound a bit unbearable, especially with not being on the ocean there is no real breeze and the river does generate my air flowing from the slow current.

But heading back East , you would not believe how lush and I think God created a new intense shade of green back there.

Hi Renee, Thank you so much. I had a call late day from a client in New York who by chance read my post here on ActiveRain. He called to say that he is planning to take his family this summer down to Longwood Gardens. I was impressed to say the least. I guess at least now and then, people are paying attention.
