Bittersweet Goodbye

It is almost unreal to think my youngest children, Colin and Meghan are leaving grade school. They have had 7 wonderful years at Hamblen Elementary K-6. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly time goes by. I see them blossoming into tweenager's and it is exciting and sad all at once.

The world changes at lightening speed, technology is becoming a central part of our moment to moment living, and I sometimes long for simpler days when, as a former stay at home mother of five, I changed diapers for what seemed like decades. I remember at times longingly looking forward to the days when all of my kids would be fully independent. Now I look back with an even deeper longing wondering where time went. The challenge is to enjoy the present and rejoice in the ages and stages that make up the here and now. When our children start sporting cell phones instead of blankies, and laptops instead of lego's, it is truly a bittersweet goodbye. And so it is with tears and giggles, we move on and beyond , away from  primary school and into the new challenges of Jr. High years. Meghan and Colin, congratulations !

This is a photo of Meghan and Colin, age 2 ...time goes by so fast!!! Here they are now:

BethAnn: I remeber thinking about how it would five more years until I was in the sixth grade. It seemed like forever and that I would never make it. Our first child will turn six soon and I can't beleive how fast the time has passed. Congratulations to you all. May you enjoy all the season of life as they unfurl.

Hi BethAnn!
I just spent a week with my daughter, her husband and their 2 beautiful children...almost 3 years old and almost a year old. I listened as they said "...next year will be easier", "...I can't wait until I can reason with them", and so on.  I kept my mouth shut...I am sure I said the same kinds of things. It was just too cliche to say "time goes by so fast" to them.  But, in my head I was thinking...enjoy now, because you won't get it back. Savor the moments...good and bad...and ultimately, they are all good in some fashion!

Hello Beth Ann,

You put out a great post.  The pictures were an awesome demonstration of the passion you expressed with your words.

Every day when I journal the things I am grateful for....my kids are always there.  I almost totally messed up.  I was the COO of an international medical device company when it hit me that three years went by and I hardly saw my kids.  I made a decision to change that and am grateful for it.

We are parents have an awesome responsibility to raise our kids.  Some times we forget and turn them over to someone else to do most of that work.  We may not be perfect but our kids do appreciate each and every moment we spend with them.

It looks like you have some awesome kids.  CONGRATS!

Regards,

David Costa

BethAnn, I'm sad to tell you but it only goes faster from here. I long for those days again. My kids both have their Masters Degrees and only seems like yesterday they started Kindergarten...
