Do you return phone calls?  I do.  I believe it is polite and also very beneficial to growing my business, developing and keeping good relationships.

I ask this question because today I became very upset with a friend of mine that does not always return or answer phone calls.  I think it is rude.  Being my friend, I have overlooked it many times but today I held that person accountable.  I told them, in case no one else had ever told them, how Rude it was.  We may become better friends because of me saying what I did.  If not, so be it.

I am sure in today's business climate, you have experienced the same thing.  Some things from the past, like common courtesy should be retained, however.  It only takes a second to answer and say "I'm busy, I'll call you later."  Many opportunities both personal and financial are missed by not taking a call.  The person calling you may not be as important to you as you are to them in your mind, but things change.  That person could one day be your boss.

So ask yourself,  "Are you guilty of this?"  Think about how it has made you feel and then imagine what your friend or acquaintance thought when you did the same thing.

Let's strive to provide good customer service, and politeness to our friends, as well by answering our phone or returning missed calls.  Courtesy is always in style!

Howdy there Ricki

You sure are right on the money with this here post.

To me someone that is taken the time to call me, is a whole lot more important to me or my company. Than I am really to them, all they will do is call someone else.

Very good tips, that everyone should be sure to fallow.

God Bless America

Thank you Dale,  Yes, if someone wants to lose business just don't return calls.  That will make it happen.  That goes for emails too!

I always return real calls, but part of our time management is not to be sucked into time wasters.

My mother raised me to be polite and not rude, LOL.  I answer the phone if I am able even if I am rushed and I always return calls... :o)

Hi Jim,   Time management is important but I find answering the first time is easier and more efficient than a back and forth several times always waiting on someone else.

Hi Shirley,  I know you do and that is one of many reasons I enjoy working with you!

OMG .. I have a friend like that. I have to call him 3-5 times before I get a return call. But to be fair.. I do it to him when he calls me back.  LOL  I would answer if I were not irritated with how long it took him to call me back.  Oh... and he is my best friend. Its been this way for 18 years.  :-)

Hi John,  That's funny but not!  It takes more time to play this game than to answer the first time.  Time management :)  Best friend huh? LOL

I know. I agree that it would take less time. But it is rare that either of us answer on the first call. I certainly answer more often than he does. Its turned into a game. Unfortunately, I also know that if I need someone RIGHT NOW I cant call him. Perhaps I should have a talk with him about it. I'll keep you posted.

I always try to return phone calls as soon as I can.  I know that I've appreciated returned calls myself, so naturally, I understand the importance of the practice.

I return phone calls. until you talk to the person, do you really know why they are calling? Maybe it can be massaged into something worthwhile, but yes, we need to control the time spent on the phone w/ them.

Hi Tom,   It's just good business to return calls.  It amazes me how many younger people seem to not know that.

Hi Lise,   Managing our calls is important but like you said we don't know what someone wants until we talk to them.  I have to say that numerous times I have called for a specific purpose but did not give that purpose out until I saw how I would be treated at the first of the call.  Many times I let the real reason for the call go unsaid because of poor customer service.

After I wrote the response, I realized how silly (thats right... a grown man said silly) it was that I cant rely on him for emergencies. So, we have made it a goal to answer and/or return the call quickly.  So, perhaps THIS POST will change things. :-)

Know what you mean Lynn.  Today I got a listing because I answered my phone right away.  The referring agent told me it meant a lot to her.
