Michael Jackson/his physician/CPR and the other voice on the 911 phone.  This is a short and sweet blog...any of you who have medical experience will understand what I'm about to say....

Michael Jackson had a physician with him, who apparently was administering drugs to him...so the news reports.

CPR...what is TOTALLY BAFFLING TO ME IS THAT...the physician was apparently administering compressions to Michael Jackson in an effort to save him...in his bed...to no avail...yup...that won't work.

Anyone with a current CPR card knows...the patient needs to be placed on a hard surface such as a floor where the compressions to ones heart will work..

When the 911 operator asked the unknown caller where the patient was and the answer was..."In/On the bed"...major questions should be asked.

It's bad enough that Demerol was administered...and he stopped breathing...hello doctor...if there was an overdose..the first thing you should have done was to administer some narcan...just in case here.

Doctor, you also should have known to move Michael to the floor...CPR does not work unless it's in a hospital bed in a critical care unit.

Was this doctor ACLS certified...I hope...he was a Cardiologist (doesn't mean he was up on his certifications)..but to leave a practice and live with Michael Jackson...What was going on there.  No Cardiologist with a practice would do that...unless he was one of those physicians in Hollywood who was known to keep prescribing meds...that is "on demand" and for a better salary than they could make on their own.

What a sad story...

Just my opinion, what is yours?

Such a sick way to live your life.  Think of all the good Michael Jackson could have accomplished as a role model if he had lived a different life.  I personally have heard all I want to hear about MJ.

Karen,

i thought he was on the floor, but I might be wrong. My understanding that the doctor was planning to accompnay Micahel on the world tour, so maybe this was the reason he was there.

Anyway, this was a glorious and tragic life.

Sandra,

I think he had a great heart...he had a horrific childhood which was all work...in other words...he had no childhood.  His father abused him...He tried...He did make a difference...and I don't believe the child abuse.  I think that he was the Peter pan...he never grew up, he just tried to please his parents.

Why,

I did the same and do to this day at times for my mother.

Sorry for you...I guess you had it better.

Jon,

He was still in his bed when someone called 911.  I don't know who called 911 but he apparently was still in the bed according to the 911 tapes until they were called...the 911 operator asked the caller where the patient was...the caller said, "He's in bed"....that Say's  a lot.

You are so right.  What amazes me is that he told Lisa Marie that his life would end the same as her fathers...Elvis...

Think of those who knew of his demise...his lawyers (maybe past) knew what was going on...lots of pain killers...in multiple names...like Anna Nicole...to many drugs...what a waste.

Depression is a sad state of mind.  He was on Zoloft as well...an antidepressant..causes chest pain.

The doctor in his care will be an issue.

Karen, this is a rather interesting topic for an industry blog -- not a bad topic, just different.

Didn't you say you were in the medical field before you got into real estate? I'm thinking that, for the most part, a lot of people wouldn't have noticed these little details.

As for me, I didn't listen to the 911 calls, or anything beyond seeing on the internet that MJ had died on Thursday. I'm just not that into MJ.

Andrew,

TOTALLY MY POINT!  No one in the news media even picked up on this either...Makes you wonder how many people have a BCLS or ACLS card in their wallet...The first thing that sent up a red flag for me was...CPR...get him on the floor where the compressions would work...and if the doctor thought he was over dosed due to the injections of demerol or any other drug...Narcan would have reversed these affects...and yes you are correct...I have a long medical background.

I was not that into MJ, but he was a fantastic preformer and a great singer...it's a shame his childhood and his father's abuse hurt him...I don't think he had a bad bone in his body...He wanted to make everyone happy...I do think he was someone with two personalities...one on stage (and one who wanted a normal live with a wife and children) and the other...one who never wanted to grow up---Peter Pan.

The Dr. hired an atty.  That is just what I was waitning for him to do.  Of course, I would be doing the same!!!

This is another case of showing that money doesn't buy you happiness!   Also, living past your means can happen at any income!

Karen - Just a bizarre ending to a bizarre life... There is no doubt that he was a music visionary... but his childhood isn't an excuse for his actions as an adult.

I finally saw a news clip this morning that had picked up on the CPR/bed issue.  I also saw one that stated his son said MJ collapsed on the living room floor.  Not sure how he then got from the floor to the bed.  Also, that the physician and a body guard were there and that the body guard initially called MJ's father (not 911).  It further stated that the father then told him to call 911.  If this is the case, why didn't the physician have someone call 911 immediately?

Most people think having a physician around will help in case of an emergency.  You actually need an EMT/Paramedic with all their toys and not a physician.  Even an ER physician may not be as well trained as an EMT/Paramedic to handle emergencies that occur outside of a hospital.

It make one wonder how could so many people around him were watching what he was doing and did not intervene. With all his masks, he seemed to be cautious about his health, and should have listened to people that became his confidants.

Is this s a fate of the celebrity, where people take advantage until the star dies?

William,

I'm sure he called his attorney before anyone else.  If MJ was in such bad health, why didn't they have a full crash cart on site?

Money doesn't buy happiness...that's exactly what I told my friends when I filed for divorce almost 20 years ago.

Ryan,

It always puzzles me why he didn't talk with a Psychiatrist?  Someone had him on zoloft.

However, I understand from people who had taken zoloft that it (in some patients) causes chest discomfort.

Linda,

Thank you for your comments.

This fact I do know.

ER physicians and Cardiologists must be ACLS certified in order to practice medicine as required by the ACHA.

My exhusband was an ER physician.

If MJ was in a situation where he was that ill, the Cardiologist should have had him hospitalized and tested for cardiac issues.

What puzzles me is, why he had a Cardiologist living in his home and not an Internal Medicine specialist.  Having a Cardiologists sends me a signal that he was having chest pains of some sort.

JMO.

Jon,

Appears that way.  Apparently the celebrity and the money that go hand in hand also affords you the ability to hire people who will do whatever you ask, no matter what the end result.

I heard on the news that a previous attorney predicted this.  Another "so called" friend said he was probably less than 125 pounds.  Why didn't the physician put him in the hospital.  He was obviously in failing health.  The failing health has been going on for a while, this just didn't happen over nite.

Why the MD didn't call 911 immediately is another issue.  My thought on that is that the Cardiologist knew he was not going to be revivable. The paramedics when they arrived wanted to call the code. I also heard that the MD performed CPR for quite some time before 911 was called.  Big mistake.  He was only a few minutes from the hospital.

Hi, Karen:

I read someplace that MJ knew the cardiologist through one of his people.  As such, MJ wanted this physician in lieu of others who may have been more qualified as his new concert promoters wanted.

I also wonder if the cardiologist was ACLS certified, as he should have been (seems unlikely, given the CPR/bed issue and not calling 911).  Lots of questions regarding what was or wasn't done at the house before EMS arrived.

I would think that if any sort of health care issue was present, they would have had the appropriate equipment and staff present just in case (crash cart, AED, meds, etc).  Most of the ER docs I know have said they are best at handling patients once 'thru the doors' but that the EMT/Paramedics and their toys are actually better outside the ER.  MJ could have easily just purchased his own 'red box'...

The Holmby Hills estate was about 4 minutes from UCLA, and it only took several minutes for EMS to respond (once called).  MJ collapsed about 12:15pm and EMS arrived about 12:30pm.  The paramedics worked on him for about 45 minutes and then transported to UCLA.  At UCLA, they worked on him until 12:26, when the code was called.

Thanks for the update.  I agree with this;

What totally baffles me is why they didn't transport him immediately.  They would have had everything available there.

Don't you mean 1:26?

I totally agree with you regarding the charges and rumors against him.  I have always felt bad that people were so cruel and made jokes about him.  I hope he is remembered for his amazing talent.  He is at peace now, a peace he wasn't able to find while alive.

Sharon,

I hope he can rest in peace and he can have a normal childhood (if that happens in heaven)...

My father passed away this spring...I asked him in a prayer to take him under his wing and give him the opportunities that my father gave me when I grew up...as strange as that sounds...I hope things are better for him.

The reason he was such a mess was a result of his father...JMO.  His success was his mother.

What a shame...I don't think he wanted to be a freak...I think it was a result of Hollywood.

Deepak Chopra said there are a lot of doctors who are "prescribing" drug to those who are willing to pay!  It is criminal and I hope those doctors will be identified.  This has been going on for years and there's need to be enforcement and these doctors need to be put in jail where they belong.

Michael was a sweet soul...even after all he had been through. I'm so sad he had to leave. Glad he could do it while the world wasn't looking. RIP

Actually, I meant 2:26pm ....  he arrived at UCLA about 1:15pm and they worked on him for over an hour, finally calling the code at 2:26.

Linda,

Didn't I hear that they worked on him at home for 45 minutes prior to transport?

1:39pm • #24

Yes, the Paramedics worked on MJ for about 45 minutes at the house prior to transporting him to UCLA.  Not sure why they did this instead of just doing a grab and go.  Especially since the MD had already been doing CPR for 15-20 minutes and UCLA was only 4-5 minutes away.

Linda,

Greta just picked up on the CPR on the bed on FOX news.  Finally!!!

Dr. Murray (NJ's Cardiologist) put his hand under MJ's back for support???You have got to be kidding me. We haven't seen the end of this mess.  Even those trained in basic CPR know to put the patient on the floor or where the attempts at CPR would work...

I still don't know why an AED, as inexpensive as they are were not in the home if Dr. Murray was checking on MJ all night...why wasn't he admitted to the hospital?

Is this medical mal - 101?

Dr. Bodden also agree's on Greta's show, this was inappropriate.

I just read the doctors Attorney stated that the CPR was effective since "the doctor was consistently checking" to make sure.   If the doctor was the only one performing CPR and you need to check to see if the compressions are effective by checking the pulse WHILE performing said compressions, how could he have been doing this?  Am I missing something?

During CPR, after so many intervals the protocol states that you stop and feel for a pulse.  Usually in the neck.  What I cannot understand is why 911 was not called immediately, regardless of whether or not the CPR was working MJ needed to be in a hospital...

The other stupid thing that was mentioned that he said was that one hand was supporting his back...while doing CPR...this manuveur is impossible for one to perform adequate CPR...I wonder is this MD has a license that is in good standing and is ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certified?
