CELL PHONE STOLEN - YIKES!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

I don't come across horrible people very often but Saturday they found me!  Some miserable selfish person stole my cell phone.  A Samsung Instinct which took me weeks to decide upon!  What use could they possibly have for it?  They must know it would be reported as stolen and the service disconnected?  What would they use it for, a coaster?  It serves no purpose for anyone else.

When reporting it, I was then given the splendid news that all my data would be lost.   Silly me, I thought when it was backing up every night, that it was actually doing something important.  Everything gone!  My numbers, my schedule, my notes  . . .  forever gone.

I arrive at the phone shop today to have it replaced and they tell me the insurance I paid for, was not ever placed but the good news was they fired that salesman!   It would only cost me $700+ to get a new phone - NOT!!!   But hey, that would only be due and payable should they find another Instinct in stock.   Guess what?   There are none available - out of stock everywhere!

After 2.5 hours of 'discussion' I finally left with a loaner phone, and a new Blackberry Storm will be couriered to me on Tuesday.  No, I am not paying $700+ for the privilege.  Yes, I am even getting free accessories for it.  And one more thing . . .  my husband will be getting a new phone too . . .  for FREE!!!

The one thing I cannot stand is people who will not do their job properly.  The service rep will lose his job because of how he chose to handle this.  Am I sorry?  Do I take responsibility for this?   NO.  He chose to try and bully me.  He then chose to be condesending.  He then wanted to wash his hands of the entire situation.  He didn't realize that, yes on a Sunday, I would contact his district manager.  He didn't understand that customer service is what his job is was all about.  He refused to believe that I was at that moment, in that phone shop,  the most important person in his life!

Can't wait to play with my new phone on Tuesday!

Hi Susan

It's a nightmare to have your phone stolen, and at time customer service is lacking. and it makes it worst.

Best of luck with your new photo.

Wow! That has to be painful, Ouch! I lost all my data one time from a digital diary that I had carried for years. I cried for days. It was like losing all my friends. This was before we could store everything on a phone. I feel your pain!

That could be SO annoying.  Just the other day I was thinking of the devastation if my computer were stolen... the pictures and such are irreplaceable...

I'm sorry to hear about your phone, Susan.  I'm not sure why it is that you will lose, or have lost all your data, if you were backing up every night.

I back up my blackberry every night, and I have all the information, contact list, appointments, even my text messages ...
If this phone went missing tomorrow, everything is backed up on my home computer (and my home computer is backed up onto a removable drive, just in case).

I don't save or store anything important on the laptop, because chances are that would be the one to get stolen ... so everything automatically gets backed up to the home computer and the external hard drive.

I hope you get your new phone quickly, and hopefully, you will be able to use your saved contacts, etc., and copy them to the new phone.

Oh wow, losing my phone or having my phone stolen is one of my worst nightmares- it is so critical to this business.  I am going to leave this post and back up my files.  I hope you like your new phone.

What an ordeal -- hope your new phone is better than ever and that you find a new way to do back ups so this never happens again.  Can't imagine why people would steal a phone either!

Hi Susan!
I had the same experience at my local "can you hear me now" store. In one week I would be due for my "free" upgrade..now there's a misleading statement! But, that isn't why I went in. I went in because I had called them about the fact that my phone quit working.  I was told they would ship me a new one in 3 days. Well, those of us in real estate know that 3 days is an eternity without our phones.  I asked if i could go into the store and pick one up..the guy said absolutely and to ensure there wouldn't be any problems, took copious notes that were left in cyberspace for the store. You can see it coming, can't you? Nope...the store said can't be done.  The guy didn't leave the correct copious notes. I asked to see the manager...the kid went in the back, came back out and said nope...couldn't do it. Again, I asked to see the manager. The manager came out and lo and behold, they could work it out after all!  Just love those phone stores!

Good for you Susan. I've always found service at most cell phone shops has been very poor. Why give service when people are line up to buy the product.

Asking who the most important person is to me right now is a lesson for all.

Susan,

A cell phone loss for a Realtor is devastating. I don't understand though, why you would lose data when you back up every night. What's the purpose of backing up then?

Sylvie -  I found out that my phone has the backup ability but my provider does not!   Isn't that interesting to discover after the fact - I am getting angrier by the moment.  Wish me luck with the new one.

I have no worries about my data on my laptop as Carbonite has it backed up automatically externally and I back up my pc at home each evening.   Thanks for stopping by.

Margaret -  that is something I someone to share with me . . .  what good is a stolen phone that cannot ever be reprogramed to be used.  It is like  stolen credit card that has been reported - no good to anyone, ever!   Thanks for stopping by.

Rich -  were you there listening to me in the phone shop? :0)   Those were my exact words.  As I said above to Sylvia,  my phone had the capability but my provider did not.  I'll back the new phone to my computer myself EVERY night.   Thanks.
