Tonight is Big Band Night on PBS and I am flooded with memories of experiences, places and people of my teens and 20s.
Like most teenagers in the 1950's my music included, Elvis, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and the Crickets and many others who gave us music that was a radically departure from our parents.
However it took a long time for the Big Band Era to die. At parties and dances the bands and disc jockeys still played music of the 1930's and 1940's.
During at those dances we enjoyed holding our girlfriends on the dance floor as they rested their heads on our shoulder or as we danced check to check.
Dancing with your date while the band played "String of Pearls" brought romance to young hearts.
Listening to Tommy Dorsey's "I'm In The Mood For Love" behind steamed up windows while parked by the lake was unforgettable ecstasy.
Thanks to PBS we old guys get to relive this experience.
PBS enriches our lives and deserves our support.
