I recently blogged my frustrations at some deals which-- despite doing all the right things and meticulously taking all the right steps-- simply don't seem to ever want to close. One in particular has been testing my mental health for months. Despite the almost daily Q&A I'd get internally at my company, I counseled patience as the key ingredient for maintaining 'deal sanity' through the [seemingly forever] months-long incubation cycle.
Throughout the entire process I likened the deal to birthing an elephant... a long gestation period followed by a relatively short period where there would be a LOT of frenzied activity, extremely loud wailing, some serious pain, followed [hopefully] by a beautiful birth and a brief period of calm before the REAL work began-- living and raising the massive baby for the next bazillion years!
I'm pleased to say patience paid off, the 'elephant baby' was born, and as soon as I have the birth announcement finished [an upcoming press release] we'll start talking incessantly about the little darling here in this blog. And we'll invite everyone out there to share in our joy, too!
Patience. When you think you're about to run out of it, remind yourself that birthing an elephant is a commitment and not one to be rushed.
