Summer is here, finally, bringing with it all that the season has to offer here in Carlsbad.

The weather much of the year is terrific here (compared to other places I have lived) but the summertime is the best. So what makes summer so special in Carlsbad?

Lifeguard Shack at Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad California - Jeff Dowler

The TGIF Jazz in the Park concert series - free, for 10 consecutive weeks, with concerts in 3 of Carlsbad's best parks. Plus a whole bunch of other summer outdoors concerts in the area - more than you can ever attend - such as the Jazz on the Green at the Four Seasons Resort in Aviara.

Sand castle on Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad California - Jeff DowlerSpending time at Carlsbad State Beach, or one of the other terrific area beaches in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff or Solana Beach.

Surfing - OK, surfing is popular all year round but the summer weather means surfing without a wet suit and warmer water.

Dining al fresco - at the beach, or one of the many outdoor restaurants throughout Carlsbad

Visitors - lots of them, to enjoy the gorgeous weather and beaches. It makes for great people watching.

Carlsbad Triathlon - the 28th, in fact, at Tamarack State Beach on July 12th

A frequent summer visitor to Carlsbad VillageTraffic - yep, there's more of it because of more visitors especially along the coast. And on the freeway there are more folks traveling north and south on the weekends, complicated further by the San Diego County Fair and Racing Season at the Del Mar Racetrack.

Leucadia Art Walk - OK, so it's not in Carlsbad, but it's right next door and it's a terrific outdoor event on August 30 from 10 - 5.

Carlsbad's famous Farmer's Market - in the Village on Saturdays and Wednesday. While it runs year-round, summertime is the best for the variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and so much more.

Fireworks - they're coming up fast, this weekend in fact, in a bunch of locations. Local favorites include the La Costa Resort and Spa and the Four Seasons Aviara Resort

My summer photo. OK, it's not special, nor is it new! Folks who know me or who have been following for some time have seen this photo each summer for the last 2 two years. It's a self-portrait, taken just after spending a few hours at, where else? The beach.

Hi Jeff ~ I figured - before I got to the bottom of your post - that that was a summer photo - perfect!!  And you're such a great marketer for California - everytime I read your posts and see your pictures it makes me think what a fun place it must be to live.  Love the bus!

We have decided we need a vacation and the beach looks like the perfect place. Lots of things to do or maybe just lay around and do nothing.

Thanks for the interesting beach photos. Someone from Austin must be visiting you. I know I have seen that bus driving around Austin.

Lynda - I'm blushing. Thanks. :)

Rita - absolutely. Let me know when you are coming to town. Buy you lunch?

Thanks, Lenn. These seem to be the big issues for folks - fun stuff, the beaches, and important things to know (my opinion).

Thanks, Liz - it is a very cool bus and it is here every summer. I have not been in it - perhaps this year. It takes me back a few years.

Can't sell Carlsbad if you don't believe in Carlsbad and all that it has to offer and do. Wish I could attend some of those concerts in the park.

Jeff, I love the photo!  I agree that the California coast is the BEST place in world -- whether to live or just to visit.  Warm sunshine, blue skies, blue ocean, green hills, friendly people...

Ahhh, it is so beautiful in your greater Carlsbad area in the summer.  I hope you enjoy every moment you can at the beach!  The only reason I actually stopped by was to say how happy I am to see your surfer dude photo back:)  That is the Jeff I first learned to love reading and getting to know.  It was much later before I realized your more serious and academic side. Now go hang ten or something fun for me!

Now you are just making me homesick! Carlsbad is wonderful and my family and I look forward every year to making the trip to the beach, Legoland and just to visit Grandma in nearby Escondido. Thanks for posting some of the fun things to do there...now get to the beach!

GOOD MORNING JEFF!  I read this when it was first featured and thought I can't wait to be back in CA!  So now that I am in San Diego and after hanging out at the beach for a few days now - I've got my summer photo going too!  (Sans the mustache though!)  --Gabrielle from Tucson -- temporarily in San Diego!
