Brevard County Tax Collectors Office I just finished reading an article that the Brevard County Tax Collectors office will no longer be accepting VISA cards to pay your tax bills.  The decision came on May 4.   VISA charges a $2.00 of 2.95% convenience fee (whichever is higher) to it's third party vendors.

The Clerk of Courts office will continue accepting Mastercard, American Express and Discover Credit cards and they will also accept Mastercard debit cards.

Marion, Osceola and Walton county tax collector offices will also no longer be accepting VISA payments.

The burden of these added "swipe" fees to small business is being passed on to the consumer in the way of higher costs of goods.  Small business owners are getting fed up with the added fees and calling for credit card reform.

Hi Sandy,  I know Visa tacks on a fee, it's a hardship especially for the small business owners.  I hope new card legislation will help- it makes it harder for them to compete with larger companies that can absorb the fees better.  Interesting, I'm not sure if our treasurer takes Visa!!???

Hi Sandy,

I am in this line of business and would like to hopefully clarify a few things.  Visa and Mastercard are groups of banks that issues credit cards.  These banks collectively determine the fees that are assessed to companies that help entities that want to accept cards for payment (payment processors).  These fees are called interchange and are the same for every bank or payment processor that assists entities to accept credit and debit cards for payment.  In governments, rules have recently changed to allow these fees to be assessed back to citizens that choose to use their cards for payment.  The other alternative is for the government to find a way to absorb these fees (so dificult that over 95% of all cities and counties do not accept credit cards) and if they can find a way to do this, that means that everyone in the city or county, including those residents that don't pay with a credit card share in these expenses.

The Florida counties that are not accepting Visa any longer are doing so because Visa only allows the fee to be assed back on tax payments and these collectors are also collecting DMV and business license fees where they would have to absorb the transaction fees (interchange).
