In today's economy, we are seeing a rash of crazy burglaries. Smash and grab, home invasions and other types of crime are on the rise. So, how can we as real estate professionals be safe when holding an open house or simply meeting with a new client at a property for the first time?
One way is the "Buddy" system. When having open houses it's good to have more than one person. I like to take someone such as an escrow professional or loan officer that can answer questions other the what I can. This is not only good for your safety, but also provides information on the loan or escrow process directly from a profesional. It looks really good to prospective buyers and/or sellers.
My local association sells pepper spray. I know that coming up against someone with a gun, this probably isn't going to offer a lot of protection, but it's better than having nothing. And you never know when you'll have to use it!
I personally was also thinking about taking a self defense class. Not only would that be good for safety, but it also is great exercise. What a great confidence booster that would be to know you have a chance in a bad situation.
I truly hope this is a great reminder in your lives.
