Was it really forty years ago that the Apollo 11 moon mission made headlines? It was an awe as a kid to watch that landing. An amazing feat by any standards. On July 20th, 1969 history was made when Neil Armstrong let people of Earth know that "The Eagle has landed" and then spoke his famous "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". He was then followed by Buzz Aldrin. It seems like that was only yesterday and how fast those years went by. That day that Neil Armstrong stepped off the Lunar module named "Eagle" was a day that almost everyone stood and watched. After their historic walks on the Moon, they successfully docked with the Command Module "Columbia," in which Michael Collins was patiently orbited above  the cold but no longer lifeless Moon. The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. On July 16, 1969 Apollo took off and it carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, JrPresident John F. Kennedy had set a  goal of reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s, which he expressed during a speech given before a joint session of Congress on May 25, 1961

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

Tom - Great post - one of my fondest possession is a little locket with pictures of the moon walk.  I was born almost 2 months premature.  Mom's original due date for me was the date of the moon walk.

I loved to watch that moon walk; it was amazing at how it stopped everyone in their tracks for a brief amount of time.

I so remember this! I was 10 and my parents didn't approve of this type of exploration so I sort of felt robbed of the experience. Years later I would work in the Aerospace industry and actually be involved in some NASA projects.

I think the entire world must have been watching that on fuzzy black and white TV. It is amazing they got back ok in that precomputer day...

I wasn't going to be around for another 8 months when this happened, but I can tell you where I was for Challenger and some of the other amazing NASA things that have happened since then. (Hubble, Mars landing) All just amazing feets that have ever changed our perception of our world.

When they landed on the moon, I was working in downtown Detroit at an office building.  Someone had brought-in a couple TV's that had been set-up in the lobby.  All I remember was the hundreds of people who had assembled all trying to catch a glimpse of the small 19" screens, wanting desperately to be part of this great historical event.

Moon walk, are we talking about michael jackson again?  Just kidding!  Although when i was in grade school, they asked us to moon walk and me and my friends started doing the dance, not pretending to be astronauts!

I can still see that little set and waiting for the tubes to warm up. I like the part about pre computer. One gets the picture that they had guys at Cape Canaveral working an Abacus.

I think it's amazing what the Hubble can do; I also find it amazing that it costs billions and they didn't think of a window washer to keep the lens clean.

I always liked the idea of zero gravity or low gravity and moon walking. Lars keeps on eating croissants and hot dogs like he is I may have to sent off for a simulator.

I had two months left to cook in my mother's uterus so I have no recollection of this day :(  I do remember my dad's newsprint coffee mug that he got when he was working for the Omaha World Herald newspaper with these headlines.  I guess that I am gonna be 40 soon! Like Greg :-/

I probably have a couple years on you: I was just a little kid. I bet your Dad's coffee mug was pretty cool. Greg is a great guy and he is also an Oconomowoc police officer; he has all my respect; especially at 2am. Renee, Happy Birthday to you.
