Are we rushing too much?  Or is it just a bad attitude?
Some things I don't understand and never will.  I have lived in this town for 30 years, shop and the same places, see the same people and no one greets me.  A simple "Hi, how are you today" would be such a nice thing to hear.  It's not just on occasion that they might be having a bad day, it's NEVER.  I don't know if they're unhappy with their jobs, having problems at home or just rushing too much but it seems to me to be more negativity then anything.

A recent example is that about a year ago they opened a new restaurant on Main Street.  It had a great menu and wonderful food!  When I like a place, I'm a familiar face.  Several months ago they hired someone new and she is always there.  With a frown on.  She is barely polite, NEVER smiles and just seems angry all the time.  It got so bad that I stopped eating there and ordered the food to take home.  Does her employer not notice this?  And I have to wonder why she is so unhappy every day.

YOU choose your day.  You can make it as miserable or as happy as you'd like it, even when you're faced with obstacles.  It doesn't help to get upset that you're stuck in traffic and all the honking and yelling isn't going to make it go away.  Put in a new CD and know you'll get home sometime.  Things that are out of our control are simply that, out of our control.  But we do have control over our emotions and actions---and that's an empowering thought.

I remember when my kids were little and I took them to the diner to eat.  We got a rude, nasty waitress and she snapped at one of my kids, hurting his feelings.  He wanted to leave and I wanted to see if I could turn the situation around (this was a challange but I was hoping for a lesson for him).  I asked them both if we could try an "experiment" (WHY do kids like that word so much???)  I told them I bet we could all make HER happy if WE were happy---(I know, I was pulling for a long shot on this one).  When she came over we were overly pleasant and polite, smiled, I think I complimented her on something and we saw this woman's attitude start to change.  Slowly, but she would come back to check, we would be nice to her and she did, she literally smiled when we left and thanked us!  I remember this but it's funny, my kids were pretty young at the time and they remember this to this day.

It taught them (I hope) it's takes just as much effort to go through life happy or sad, miserable and depressed or trying to focus on the good (and there is always good, even if you have to dig for it sometimes).  These people that I see day in and day out who never say hello, well, I don't bother trying much anymore and that is a shame.  But they are choosing their day, and I'm choosing mine.
What kind of day do YOU want today?

Every morning we wake up we have a choice to make. We can either choose to be in a good mood or we can choose to be in a bad mood. Whatever we decide will dictate the rest our day. Choose wisely!!

This reigns so true Carole and provides a simple reminder...of self & will.  No sense in being miserable, there's not enough time for that.

Nice article but I wa always taught that we make our situations most of the time and how we deal with them sets the tone and the outcome. While I totally agree that there is nothing worse than being around a negative source, I also believe that us joing them is not ever going to change the situation. I try to start the dialogue if I see someone in a bad mood and most of the time it helps them and I feel good about me. You seem to be a positive person and I would hate to see you abck off your feelings just because someone else dampens the day. I loved your experiment with the kids and I will try that one with mine.

Have a great day.

Carole,

It's up to you how your day turns out. It's your attitude that plays the key role in it. And if your attitude is positive, it reflects on just about everything you do that day. Your business, home life etc. Your post is a good reminder for us.

I was thinking about that today when my dog came up to the bed to work on getting me awake. Same time everyday, 7:30A. I always wake up in a good mood and she puts a smile on my face with all the funny sounds she makes. We play games with each other until I am finally up. I even taught her to growl" I love you". I get up once she has me laughing!

What a nice way to wake up!  My dog waits until I wake HIM up, then he's mad at me for getting up early :) You are surrounded by all this FIRE energy, it's no wonder you're such a positive person!  SO much better then an alarm clock!!

When I had my cafeteria service I had a great big cardboard smile on a stick(like you can buy in the novelty stores) I kept it under my counter and if a grouchy or sullen customer came up to the register I would hold it up in front of my face as I took their money...I got a laugh every time!

I love your outlook on life, Carole.

I try to live with that philosophy every day. (I must admit, some days are difficult!)

I like to equate it to a boomerang........you get back what you give out.

..pay it forward..it works..

I guess we just need to hope that all our positivity begins to rub off on our surroundings.

I absolutely think it comes back to you.  Optimistic and positive people attract those type of people back to themselves---and yes, some days are more challanging then others but I always remember someone I worked with years ago saying he was happy EVERY DAY when he woke up and  his feet hit the floor.  He had been through an experience where he didn't know if he was going to "make it."  How nice to cherish every day but that is surely learning the hard way!

I like to take each day as it comes.  I don't particularly like it when people at store say have a great day! We really do have to have some regular days to know how to appreciate the great ones.
