One of the benefits on being on Active Rain for a little bit or blogging on on your own is that gives you the opportunity to go back and review your old blog posts.  In my case, I can laugh at some of our older blog posts and can see our growth over time.

Reviewing Your Old Blog Posts

More importantly, it gives me the opportunity to assess and reflect what I am doing as a blogger.  Do you see improvement in your blogging year over year, quarter or quarter or month over month ?  There are so many things that go into one's blog such as content, design, style, photos and videos, links, keywords and the like.

This thought came about when Stephanie and I noticed that our tags for our blogs are completely out of control   In the beginning and even later blog posts, I did not fully understand the tagging concept.  So last night I went back to the first blog post I wrote in 2008 and one by one, am starting to update the tags.  That is when I thought about the potential for this blog post as I was thinking about the multitude of benefits from reviewing your old blog posts.

They are as follows:

  1. Assessing your blog content:  Are you writing about relevant subjects ?  Engaging your readers ?  Which of your older blog posts generated more comments ?
  2. Blog Style- How is your design now compared to then ? Are you utilizing photos and video ? Is your alignment better ? Font type and size used more effectively ?  Do your blogs have a sleeker look ?  Is there enough white space and not too long-winded ?
  3. Linking- Reviewing old blogs allows you to add relevant links that you may have forgot to do back then.  It also allows you the opportunity to link to newer blogs and so forth.  Interlinking strategies can provide for greater readership and stickiness to your blog.
  4. Keywords- Are you using keywords in your old blogs ?  If not, you can take a moment or two to add some of those relevant keywords in your old blog post.  Also, perhaps even the title too.
  5. Updating - I added a little update on some of my old blog posts.  For example, if I was talking about a property, I updated that we successfully sold the property and so forth.
  6. Tags - Like I mentioned above, having appropriate tags are important as your blog is more structured and organized.  Ours had too numerous and redundant tags (and still does) as we have many blog posts to go through.
  7. Planning for the future- I think by reviewing your older blog posts can give you thoughts, directions and insight in terms of where do you want to take your blog in the future ?  Who is your audience ?  Who do you want your audience to be ?  What is your blogging strategy ?

With us, blogging is fun and we enjoy it.  But we primarily do it to grow our business.  We have benefited greatly in one year by receiving countless leads and clients who found us through our blog.  Our goal is to continue that and even grow that part of our business through our Internet marketing strategy.  Thus, it is important to us to provide fresh, quality content as well as being consistent with it, week in and week out.

We love the fact that when a consumer types in a few keywords about our local market, that chances are, our blog posts will be at the top of Google !  And when they get there, we need our content strong enough for them to contact us when they are ready !

In the future, we will be more cognizant in reviewing older blog posts more often to make sure they are updated, have keywords and appropriate links.  So when you have a day of down time here and there, why not take the time to go into your archives and do this exercise.  If you do, please let us know your experiences and insight.  And especially so if you have already done this in the past !

What other benefits are there in reviewing your old blog posts ?

Sometimes old blog posts can also give you new ideas for future posts.

Is Christopher the one who just became the broker for this agency?  I'm guessing.  Yes, I need to clean my blog closet.  Do you know how to do the html version, I tried to use that tab and did not know how.

Christopher,

Although I don't yet have old blogs, I'm willing to lose the couple points to edit them as I learn and add new posts. Sometimes inserting a link to newer material, sometimes working on "medium and long-tail keywords."

It is also my understanding that editing older posts somehow gives it an SEO boost. Don't really understand the how or why, but I'll trust...

Great advice - and may it all bring us the business we deserve!

I'll find myself writing too many "member's only" or too many personal blogs. Always have to evaluate. Sometimes I check one of my outside blogs and purge things I later think shouldn't be on that specific blog, depending on that blog's agenda.

Jim - Most definitely.  Old blog posts can give wonderful ideas for new blog posts.  In addition, that is a great way to link up each individual post as well.  Or start a series of posts !

Monika - Yes, I did recently become part owner of our company RE/MAX Affiliates in Philadelphia.  I do not use the html version too often, only when inserting code for a video or graph.

Irene- Absolutely !  I do not know exactly why that editing old blogs is good for SEO but I have heard that too.  Maybe it is just content being changed and updated, even if it is slightly ?  I think just taking a couple of minutes and adding a keyword and a few links is a super idea and of course, interlinking to other related blog posts as well.

Steve- I think personal blogs are a great idea as it gives folks the opportunity to get to know you a little better and relate to you.  I rarely write a members only post.  For more active rain and Realtor oriented post, I will just leave it public but just not post it to our outside blog Philadelphia Real Estate Voice .  I think the content that you share on your blog about the mortgage market is awesome !

Irene - I hear you !  I almost deleted a few of ours but it really can become a great learning experience : )

Love it! Thanks! Especially since I am so new to blogging!  Not new in the real estate biz since I've been doing that for 13 years.  But new to blogging!  Facebook and twitter are easy since it's just mini updates.  But blogging takes time and thought.  And I appreciate all your help and guidance!  :-)

Gita - Yes, we saw some fireworks from our condo in No Libs.  Hope you had a great weekend as well and when you get time, review some of your old blog posts.

Eleanor - So true !  You do not want to write a blog post and six months later the guidelines have changed and you still have that old blog post out there !  That is a great reason to update and review your old posts for sure !  And as a prior commenter stated, when you update and refresh them, that is good for SEO and all too.  Thus, there are many benefits to review those old blog post !

The point about being out of control with tags is great - years ago i didn't understand the true use of tags and would perform tagapalooza on each post - now I keep it down to simple and relevant key words and don't get carried away. I've noticed it makes a big difference.

Tina - Exactly !  It is a great exercise to see how you have grown as a blogger over time !  And you can get some new blog post ideas at the same time !

Malita- "Tagapalooz" !!!  LOL, that is great.  I hear you.  I have done similar things so it will take us some time to clean up our tags, put a little progress each week is not bad.  I think it will make the blog outline much cleaner and structured for consumers to find related blog posts and for ourselves to find our old blog posts more efficiently as well.
