Survey the damage

Good news:  the bridge & concrete abutments withstood the racing flood waters that came down Trout Run which is usually a meandering stream most of the year.

Bad news:  there  is three foot wide by two feet deep gap between the path and the bridge.

Good news:  Onions, tomatoes and squash and some of the fence survived the flood

Bad news:  Everything is covered with soupy mud.

A few days ago I asked Robert Hammerstein to lend us his ark when I wrote Under Water and Still Rising

This morning three days after the flooding Hubby & I rode his ATV down the neighbor's path to the back entrance to our field, garden and woods to assess the damage.  In the stream we saw many rocks that will form the base to rebuild the access ramps to the bridge.  Then we will mix cement to pour over the rocks to solidify the base.  Finally we will cover the rocks with dirt and tamp it down.

We are hoping that a few days with no rain and hopefully sun will dry out the garden.  If not, there is a Farmer's Market just down the road.  Besides I did plant a few extra squash plants around one of my flower gardens near the house.

More good news:  We are just grateful that our house is 25-30 feet above the stream

So sorry about the damage, Mary.  I know you walk that and enjoy and respect your land deeply.  You will no doubt put it back to order and make it even more beaurtiful and possibly protected, if it can be done. It is certainly a gorgeous parel of land.

Sounds like onions, tomatoes and squash are made of the same sturdy stuff that you and your hubby are made out of, Mary.  :)  Also sounds like you guys have your work cut out for you.  I'm thinking sunny thoughts for the next several days to dry you guys out.

Michelle--Thank you.  You are right we will restore the beauty.  The ravages of a flood can't take that away, just temporary inconvenience.

Heather--I appreciate the sunny thoughts.  Sturdy stuff--yes, that is us.  We will recover as will the beauty of the land.

Have a great 4th of July Michelle & Heather.

Carole--I am always happy when you stop by with encouraging words.  And today is the 4th and time to celebrate our country's birthday and reaffirm the freedom we have inherited.  More later in post after the boat parade.

Mary Last year we had 2 floods plus and made the national news as the first was a 500 year flood and we went right to a 1000 year flood within 8 months later. It was very hard times for those living in low areas, good you are high and dry.

Mary--I know our damage was small in comparison to what others experienced this time and in years past.  Gratitude and reach out to those less fortunate are important lessons to learn.  Was your property damaged?

A friend just sent a series of photos from the fire station in another section of Erie County.  First the firefighters had to rescue the office manager when the water rose suddenly. The fire hall suffered at least half million dolllars in damage and five fire fighters's lost their cars.

I hope by now you have dried out and have been able to do whatever repairs were needed.  I'm so glad your home was not damaged.
