A recent reminder has been issued by mercer County executive Brian Hughes about the County's "Bark Parks" here is a copy of that release as well as the link to mercer County Parks and all the great features they have to offer. TRENTON, N.J. -Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes reminded dog owners across the County of a great option for enjoying the warm weather with their canine friends: the "Bark Parks" at Mercer County Park.

"Our Bark Parks are a terrific resource for keeping your dog healthy and happy when the weather is good," said Hughes.

The Bark Parks consist of two separate parks-one for dogs weighing under 35 pounds and one for dogs weighing over 35 pounds.  The Small Dog Bark Park measures approximately 13,000 square feet; the Big Dog Bark Park, approximately 29,000 square feet.  Both parks include fenced-in areas, different surface areas, obstacles, "dog friendly" water fountains and a variety of other active recreation resources for dogs.

Since the opening of the Bark Parks in 2005, this site has been a very popular destination for pets and their owners all year round.  To this end, the Park Commission installed portable lighting in both to improve visibility during the darker evening hours of early spring and late fall.  The Bark Parks provide a safe, clean, and environmentally friendly environment in which dogs may run free. They also constitute the only area in the Mercer County Park System that does not require owners to leash their dogs at all times.

Hughes remarked that he "was really proud to get involved with this project a few years ago.  When possible, government needs to open up new recreation opportunities for every resident, both human and animal."
