This blog will go into how you can forward your Gmail emails to your cell phone and some advanced tricks.
Most people don't realize it, but your cell phone has an email address. For Verizon the format is YourNumber@Vtext.com so it would look like this 7035551212@vtext.com
Even if you have the LOWEST tech phone, you can ask whoever deals with your email to have a copy of each email sent to your phone. That is if you own a Yourname@Yourdomain.com or Yourname@YourCompanyDomain.com (if you have gmail, keep reading)
This hack (I call it a hack since it isn't true FULL email to your phone, like with a blackberry) has some drawbacks.
- You only get the first sentence of the email. But for me that is 95% of what I need. That tells me a) who wrote, b) when, c) about what. It is GREAT if you get your faxes via email, it basically acts like an alert to say "your fax came in". Maybe in a few years we can see the fax from our phones
- Verizon will BOUNCE large emails (not attachments, just large amounts of text). So the customer receives an error message and thinks the email didn't go through, when in fact it DID go to your inbox, but the CC to your phone was the culprit. I don't think Sprint bounces.
So I couldn't stand the bounces, and I didn't want FULL email on my phone (too many). So since a copy of ALL of my emails go to my GMAIL as a back up of sorts, I set up a filter to forward emails to my phone. Since I don't want ALL emails sent to my phone, I picked a keyword to put in my emails. That KEYWORD triggers the forwarding to my cell phone. My keyword is "vtext". I just slip that in at the end of an outgoing email that I want to be alerted to the reply and that reply email will get forwarded to my cell.
One downside is the email "from" is from Gmail and not the sender, so this still isn't 100% ideal, but with the subject line I can see "oh Sally wrote me"
TO FORWARD IN GMAIL:
- Go to Settings (upper right)
- To forward EACH email to your phone go to "Forwarding" then put in your 7035551212@vtext.com
- To forward SPECIFIC emails click on "Filters"
- Click on Create new filters
- Next to "Has the word" put your keyword, like vtext.
- (you can also use filters for specific people)
If you use Outlook, you also also use the Rules Wizard to forward certain emails to your phone as a text message. Either using the keyword system, or all emails from XYZ person.
Good luck
