How does the AR blog dashboard work?  How do posts from 3 hours ago get back to the top?

I'm very curious as to how the main AR blog dashboard works...if anyone knows, please chime in here.

I am reading a blog post that was on the board 3 hours ago.  It has one comment made by the person that wrote the blog.

I know that when the AR "G*ds" write informative posts they keep them at the top so we all are aware of new things going on.

But, how does this work?

It is apparently not a "How many reader's commented" situation because some of the more popular blogs go down the board and/or are featured and move to the coveted "Featured post" big board.

I just wonder if anyone understands the way the dash boards work, if there is any rhyme or reason or is it the same as who gets gold stars?  Just depends?

Hi Karen ~ I hope to read some answers here.  Sometimes it's like deja vu all over again when posts pop up to the top that I read some time before.  Very interesting...

Karen I just found the answer out from another blog and tried it.  Go back to an old post, hit edit, then change the visibility from "members only" to "draft" and hit "post blog entry."

Then go back, make the visibility "members only" and hit "post blog entry" and it will appear on the dashboard again.

Karen also if a post gets "featured" it goes back to the top of the blog dashboard.  I have seen that happen as well.

Well I thought it had to do with the activity of the blog. IE a blog gets a comment or maybe so many clicks on it so it gets moved back to the dashboard section, maybe not.

Liz,

I hope so too!  I'm just curious, so let's see if anyone knows the answer.

Michelle,

How can you publish a draft entry?  AND what if it's not a "Member's only" post? What if you want it to be on Localism, etc?

Tammy,

I know think it stays on the main dashboard longer if it is featured. However, I read a post tonight with no more comments than that of the person that wrote the blog that showed up 3 hours later at the top of the list.  This post did not even have enough words in the body to get points and it was back on top.  Michelle might have some info, but it still doesn't make sense to me and I've been here awhile.

Heather,

Thank you for your comments, however, that would not make sense either.  If that was the case, the blogs would be posted from top to bottom with the amount of comments, and it's a mixed bag.

Karen, essentially you are changing the status of your old blog to a "draft," but you have to hit "post blog entry" to save it as a draft.  Then go back into that same post and change the visibility back to "members only" or "public" and it should appear back on the dashboard.  As far as Localism I have no clue how that works.

Michelle,

Do you mean as you have "edited" the post?  If you don't do Localism...talk to Katerina Gassett about it as she is the AR "Queen" in Wellington...did she invite you?  I'm only 40 minutes from you in east Fort Lauderdale...glad to have you.  Thanks for you help.

Karen, it depends on where and how you're viewing the blogs.

If you go from the "active rain" in the upper left hand corner of the page, you get featured posts, at least I do. If I scroll down the page, on the right, I can select "Recent Blog Posts". That gives me posts in chronological order, with most recent at the top of the page.

If you go to "Blogs" on the colored bar, toward the right side of the page, you can then select a number of parameters that influences the order in which the blogs appears. If you change the selections, you change the order of appearance.

Hope that helps.

I don't know Katerina, but I did see she's in Wellington too.

Yes, when you go to the old post hit "edit" then follow the steps....

Change the visibility to "draft" and save it.  Then go back to the post hit "edit" again and change the visibility back to what it was.

Hi Karen  Hope you got over your cold last time we talked you were un der the weather.  My comment to this is ...Another AR mystery.

As far as what Michele said I thought if you changed an old post and resubmitted it. That it would be re-entered in the same date and time as the old blog post.  That way they have control over bloggers re-submitting the same post over and over again.  That is what I was told  by one of the AR staffers  I think it was Steven Graham.

Anyway I tried it and he was right ...It was like an edit and just edited the post and submitted it to the old placement.  Maybe Michele ran across something new and different.   But...it didn't work for me   Enjoy 4 th keep well

Andrew and Michelle, thanks.

June,

Thanks, you know it, I was sick for almost 2 weeks...thanks for remembering (see Andrew?)

I have edited mine when I saw typo's or didn't like a sentence structure...but it didn't go back up to the top.  Not that I was trying...

How is it in PA, my family is from Harrisburg.  I raised my children in Gettysburg...but you know that, right?

I had wondered about that too... I even saw posts that were a few days old pop back up. What Michelle says, makes sense, I never tried it tough. I should just to test it. But isn't that kind of like gaming the system? Just asking. ~Rita

Karen - I just 'tested' this and it seemed to work exactly as Michelle said. Now I see the post dated for today. I didn't check the points though to see if I lost any or received any extra? ~Rita

One more thing. For some reason it makes me feel like I'm not playing by the rules... I don't know why. :)

It didn't count it as a new post - no points given

Rita,

I too think this is "gaming" the system if what Michelle says does work.

I won't do it...I don't want that.

Thanks so much for stopping by...maybe someone from AR will step up and let us know.

Karen - I completely agree about the "gaming" and I was also curious how old posts were popping back up.  I'm assuming a lot of people aren't aware how to do this because if they were I think everyone who had 0-3 comments would repost it again.  The guy who commented on how to do this figured it out by accident.

Michelle,

I don't know which one you are talking about, but I have seen this on multiple occasions.

If it's the same guy, you are probably right.

I think if it's an AR post with information, they control it though.

Interesting, and I would think it could be controlled internally.  Hopefully they will revise this to be fair to everyone.

Karen, you reminded me one such case. There was a left wing post, that was featured. Katerina Gasset wrote a rebuttal, whihc also was featured. Then they played that trick and the initial post popped up first again. This was a very strange situation. The rebuttal, that came two days later was at the bottom, and the initial post was #1.

Was very weired.

I did that unexpectedly about knowing the outcome was to bring it back up to the top. After posting the blog, and receiving 2 comments, I just wasn't sure if it was the "time" of the day to post it. I went back to put it back into draft mode. So, it "disappeared" for a while and few hours later, I "re-posted" it. It went back on top.

So, the draft mode is what you are seeking for the explanation.

Also, as Tammy has mentioned, "Featured Post" puts it back on top as well.

OK...after reading your other post....I know how to game the system now.  Game on!  Just kidding, but I suppose that where there's a will there's a way.

Karen,

Not sure if this applies to your query, but I had a post redated (by the gods) when it was featured. Posted on Thursday and had comment saying it appeared as a feature in the newsletter.  Got the gold star and dashboard slot on Monday - which was the new date of my post. Yes, the older comments remained but the post popped up as new.

I think this was just a "backlog" on features; the post date needs to be freshened to appear.

They know about the problem and they are in the process of fixing it.

Jon and Larry,

They know there is an issue and I deleted the post that I wrote about the issue.  Not that I had to however Bob really didn't want the info out there.  I deleted for AR.

Loreena,

Yes you are correct.  They are aware and working to fix this issue.

Irene,

Seriously, there is never a "backlog" of features, I've been here forever.  That is never an issue.  There are so many featured slots a day and most of the time they don't fill all those slots.

There is a glitch in they system and they are working on fixing it.  Consider yourself lucky!  :-)
