Although we often take these words for granted, they are the cornerstone of our republic - an enlightened premise upon which our nation was built.

The fifty-six men of wealth and influence that signed the Declaration of Independence knew that in doing so, they were guilty of the capital offense of treason and faced the hangmen's noose.

But the prospect of self-determination was so compelling that it overrode all trepidation and fear of consequences. And this fervor for freedom enabled a rag-tag group of militias to defeat the better armed, better equipped, and better trained battalions of British Redcoats.

Richard... I grew up in a town with the distinction of have a zip code of 01776... this Independence day and the revolution that broke our country away from the British monarchy was a constant topic for children in my home town. Not many knew the sacrifices made by our forefathers, they were extraordinarily tough and patriotic men who gave up life and liberty to gain our freedom. I posted on these thoughts as well.

I think it is often forgotten that the men who signed the Declaration were creating tyranny. Tyranny against their own government at the time. It was a dangerous thing to do, but it was the right thing to do and we are grateful.

I think that is why that one phrase is in the Declaration was added. They tried, it wouldn't work, this was their only option. Unless they wanted to be enslaved to the King forever. 

"When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

We paved the way for other nations to follow in Freedom and Liberty and became the standard of that across the world.

The whims of a monarch which had been thrust into an unwanted war 20 years prior and who had been put into debt by those 56 men and others who initiated that war and refused to pay a dime for it.

What am I talking about? History, of course. We teach the "patriotic" side, and don't really know all of the background as to how we actually got here. Am I being revisonist? Not at all. Just pointing out the truism that there is always more than one side to every story.

BTW, I teach the Declaration and the Constitution to my students...10 years now, including summer school, and I don't leave out the inconvenient facts just so they can feel all warm and fuzzy about our country. They need to be able to make decisions based on all of the facts available.

Nothing "inconvenient" about those facts at all. The desire for self-determination doesn't reside in the validity of the grievances ... as you know, most of those were rather petty.

And the fact that the Monarchy has been nearly bankrupted was the underlying reason for the success of the revolution.

That doesn't change the fact that these men laid it all on the line to create a new country, and the there is nothing revisionist about that.
