Do you recognize this face? No doubt you've seen photos of this face thousands of times, yet perhaps Lady Liberty Life Size Facefrom a different perspective. It's my personal visit with the Lady.

This is the face of freedom, the face of liberty, the face of hope as millions of bright-eyed immigrants sailed into the harbor.

This is of course the face of Lady Liberty, the Statue of Liberty. This life size model is on display in the Statue's Museum on Liberty Island.

Early this a.m. the local morning showed the Statue of Liberty is opening today the crown for visitors for the first time since 9/11.

I took these photos last December on a cold blustery day while visiting New York City and of course a visit to the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island.

Statue of Liberty

We were in the "Big Apple? for a visit with family and friends including fellow Rainer Marlene Bridges to help celebrate my daughter's birthday. And of course the Statue of Liberty was high on our list for a visit. Yet for me this visit was from a different perspective, it was a very up close look at Lady Liberty.

Lady Liberty Torch, View from Ellis Island, Foot

Top left is the original 1886 torch which after many years of weathering was removed and preserved inside the island's museum.

Middle, is one of my favor photos that I shot from inside the processing center on Ellis Island. I can only imagine the thoughts of hope shared by millions arriving from across the seas. My own grandparents traveling with a 2-year old child in 1913 from Amsterdam Holland were among those looking for a better life in America, the land of opportunity.  The Ellis Island website maintains a history of passenger records of those processed through the center. It's an amazing look back in time.

Right the full scale foot of Lady Liberty.

Without exception our visit was an experience of a lifetime for this proud immigrant's granddaughter. them if you like.

God Bless America the land that I love ~ Happy 4th and happy birthday birthday USA!

~ All photos are my own from December 2008, feel free to use them if you like.

Lynda:

What a neat tribute for the holiday! The Statue of Liberty is amazing - I still remember climbing to the top as a kid many years ago.

Have a wonderful holiday. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this special day!

Lynda

That's neat; I never looked at the face or had a chance to. I looked at it and wondered at first. They did a great job of restoring the original torch per the photos

I went to the World Trade Center, Liberty Island, and Ellis Island for my fifth anniversary back in 1999. Although we got to Liberty Island on what we thought was the first ferry to the Island, obviously there were other first ferries, too, because the line to go to the crown was already three hours long. So we skipped it. Fortunately, we did go to the top of the World Trade Center, which didn't exist just 2½ years later.

Great 4th of July post... Oddly, I have travelled all over the country and a little bit of the world and have yet to make it to NYC.  Nice tribute...

Lynda, I was in NYC with my sister before our daughter gave up her apartment for a crash pad and we took the cheap way to see the statue (the Stanton Island Ferry).  I got some great pictures though and it was FREE!!  I have visited the island before but I must admit I missed the museum.  Was it located on Ellis Island?

Lynda, she sure is a beauty and your family story adds to it!  We agree, the middle shot does make you wonder how immigrants feel as they are approaching her for the very first time!

Oh wow! I would have never recognized her face, that close-up! I've never seen photos from this close. I'm surprised this didn't get a feature. It's truly unique, and so fascinating!

Lynda, Great photos and a very interesting story. I especially like the photo of the face. My trips to New York have always been for business and I haven't had a chance to see the museum. I will have to make time in the future.
