I happen to think very highly of my GPS. I liked the one in my prior car, a lease, better because it was built in and had more functionality, but my Garmin works pretty well.

This is what I like about it, and how I use it.

I love my GPSFirst, it tells me where I need to go and I'm normally pretty compliant unless I think it's wrong (and I occasionally tell IT where to go). Despite living here in SoCal for 4 years I am still learning my way around. There are a zillion roads and with the large area I cover there is no way I can get where I need to be efficiently by relying on a map. And with buyers in a broad range of price ranges, and being interested in many different areas, it will take years to know my way well enough to not rely on my GPS. And it's so much easier - I don't have to think too much.

Plus if I make a wrong turn, I don't get yelled at or insulted - it just "recalculates." And I can blame a wrong route on the GPS rather than taking the blame myself and looking stupid

When heading out on a tour of homes I just pre-program in all the destinations and we're set. For the most part it works well, although every now and then it sends me on a wild goose chase, or in circles. And brand new subdivisions don't work.

My GPS helps me gauge my time so I know approximately when I will arrive at a destination. This is useful if I need to let a client know when I might arrive if I am running late. Not good when it tells me it will take far longer than the time I allowed for - it's step on the gas time.

But being able to check the time also helps with answering buyer questions about commute times from point A to Point B (traffic notwithstanding). I've used it a number of times to help them figure out estimated times from homes they like to work, etc.

I can also track the mileage - a common question is "how far is...?" and the GPS can be useful in providing that information for folks who don't know the area. And they don't have to rely on me if I have only a rough guess or no clue at all.

And if I need to find a local restaurant, tourist attraction or something similar - often in an area I don't know really well when out with buyers - I can do so on my GPS and have it guide us there.

My GPS has also, interestingly, stimulated some funny conversations about GPS experiences, and jokes about driver vs. machine when driving buyers around...a point of commonality and some rapport building, if you will.

I have yet to download the GPS application for my Blackberry - that's next, as I've heard it works well.

My Garmin drives me crazy!!  It's wrong so much of the time. It likes to take me on routes that are longer, and if I don't agree with it, in a very snide tone she says "Recalculating".  I also map out my showing routes in the Mapsco before all showings, and never rely on the GPS for anything.

I have had a garmin for some time now!  My friends on AR responded to my inquiry.. and they didn't let me down.  I have named my GPS JOURNEY!  So, Jeff, enjoy the journey and your gps... they are awesome!

I have one built in my car, and it's pretty good. I haven't updated it, but it works for me.

I love the hands free link navigation in my car.  Between that and my iPhone 3Gs, I'm a happy camper and have everything I could possibly want or need!  Enjoy!

I have problems with mine taking me in circles. Its wrong a lot of the time and if I have clients following me its embarassing. Does anyone know what the most accurate of GPS's is?

I don't have a GPS system as I NEVER get lost. LOL Seriously, having lived in & around the central OH area all my life, I don't have issues with finding places and I pretty much know all the short cuts. Plus, we have so many new subdivisions here that I thought it wouldn't be as useful as need be.

I have already used the mapping app that comes free w/the Blackberry. I find it helpful to give buyers or open house guests the "official" commute times since they may not drive as fast as I do. I recently used it to answer a question for an open house guest. They thought it was "pretty cool" so it is a good ice breaker as you say.

Jeff, I've never had a GPS until I got my iPhone. Now I use it quite frequently. At least when I remember it's there!

I'm inspired to take my gps out of the glove compartment and REALLY try, once & for all, to learn how to use it! (I hope it's a garmin too!) A safe and happy 4th to you and your family, Jeff!

Jeff - I keep saying I'm going to get a GPS but have yet to purchase one.  My son just purchased one and loves it.  I may have to finally bite and bullet and get one myself.

Donna - I find that mine is pretty good most of the time, but there are some times it makes no sense at all - the satellites must be out of whack.

Joan - I will...mots of the time.

Suma - the ones that are satellie based are best since they get updated automatically.

Terri - sounds like a winning combo

Jennifer - well I have had the same problem. But if the clinet has one and gets the same directions at least it makes you feel a little better. Don;t know which one is the most accurate - it may depend on the area and how well they have done the mapping.

Elaine - I need to play with my BB more.

BB - isn't that true of so many applications?

Mara - they are pretty easy to use, in theory at least. Have a great holiday yourself!

Donna - well when i was working in Cambridge is was not a problem since the area was small. But out here it would drive me nuts. And I find it useful when visiting Los Angeles and other cities nearby.

My wife thinks I love my Tom Tom more than her. Not true but I do think it is a great tool for our business.

We both have one but Brian uses his constantly with buyers. Does yours automatically load via the POI loader (Points of Interest) ours does and it's awesome - except when it takes Brian in circles. We have one of those built in ones in Brian's Tahoe but that is old and most areas built in the last 3 or so yrs are not on it and it was way more expensive to buy the updated disc for that than get two garmins! ~Rita

Hi Jeff ~ I'm a late adopter of GPS and have probably used mine only half a dozen times (and cursed at myself for forgetting to use it another half dozen times while lost!).  I think mine is a lemon even though I spent a lot of money on it - it's always recalculating even when I haven't deviated from its directions.  I'm really looking forward to the dashboard one when I get a new car someday.

Great advice for things to do with the GPS - I'll have to put that bossy woman through her paces!

Jeff, my car has one, and I can't believe how much I love it!  My market area is pretty huge, and it's saved me a whole bunch of potentially embarrassing moments of getting lost somewhere in outer Montgomery County or Northern Virginia.

Jeff I have a TomTom and it is great.  The one I have now is my second one, I got it for Christmas and it has Text to Voice.  I don't know what I ever did without one.

If you get out into a very, very rural area, the car on my Garmin screen is driving off road in a sea of white and the lady keeps telling me "Turn Left... Turn Left... but I do love her help. Most of the roads are actually mapped which really surprises me.

Lynda - yeah, those traffic reports could be a great benefit - have to see if there is an application for the Blackberry.

Terry - better be careful

Rita - LOL. I priced out cars with them and without and decided the $1200-$1500 extra for the in-dash GPS was not worth the money. Mine operates a bit differently from yours but I suspect there is more I can do with it.

Liz - ha ha. Well, she can be relentless.

Pat - same here.

George - you do get dependent on them don'y you? I hardly ever look at a map, expcept Google maps.

Mary - LOL. Yeah, I have been in a few areas like that here.

Jeff - I got a Garmin for fathers day and it is fantastic.  It eliminates any argument between me and my wife about how to get somewhere.  We just plug in the address and go.  Very handy for agents.
