Anyone who knows age-old gardening expressions knows this one -- "Knee high be the Fourth of July."

That refers to the corn crop, of course. Last year, at my house, due to circumstances, we did not have much of a garden. This year, things are better. But, there was still some tension. Is the corn crop "knee high by the Fourth of July?"

The wife and I had some discussion about it, we thought that the answer was borderline at best. Maybe yes, maybe no. Then, good news, we had a visitor who happens to be the grandson and he confirmed for us, 100 percent for sure, that the corn is "knee high by the Fourth of July". It is a good feeling to know that the corn meets the growing guidelines, for sure, once and for all.

Sometimes in Bellingham you just have to help things along a little bit.

Steve, This the second year for my garden and things are going badly due to our unseasonably cool weather and LOTS of rain. My tomatoes are almost non existent, the peppers are puny and the beans and squash are just starting to flower. very disappointing. Looks like your having better luck than I am.

So I guess it just all depends on whose knee you are talking about!  Actually, it looks pretty tall - maybe that's just the camera angle!

What a cute grandchild!!  You have to read my blog tomorrow about my husband's tomatoes.  He wanted them to be fruitful by July 4.

Steve - So, knee high can vary according to some body's age and height? You know, based on how fast kids grow, you'll have to be a little more successful each year to beknee high by the 4th of July if you're using your grandson for good measure. Cute guy!

Hi Steve, I'm hoping we can be a little bit lax on the old rule of thumb for our garden's corn crop down here in Vancouver.  When I went to WWU (fka WWSC) in B'ham, the times I drove home to Vancouver at Spring Break or Thanksgiving break it seemed like going forward two weeks in the growing season for Spring, and going backwards in the season for Autumn (more leaves still on the trees the further south I went).   John

Farmer's Almanac - page 47 or so.

I often wonder about the ark, being 450 cubits in length.  Whose cubit?
