I hear it's hurricane season again.Something finally knocking doom and gloom about real estate sales of the front pages.

I think in Florida or at least in southwest florida, where I live, this means something different to us than to those reporting in the national press. Over the last 3 days we were cheering on the strenghthening of what has become tropical storm Barry and hoping that it wouldn't miss us. Quite frankly, we need the rain. As I sit here it is partly cloudy and becoming a little muggy and no we didn't get enough of Barry.

The news media has been warning us to prepare. They will do their seminars and promote tax free opportunities. For those of you outside of Florida that's where the state allows you to purchase particular items, which have been earmarked as necessary hurricane items, free of sales tax.

I have this feeling though. That's a feeling that the residents of southwest florida are listening, but that's about it. Oh we'll buy our water, batteries, etc. but will we leave?

The answer for many is NOPE!

Nothing happened last year. Houses built over the last several years have been built to codes to withstand almost anything, it seems. We've added all the safety features and

WE'VE SURVIVED A HIT!

I doubt this will be a very popular opinion, especially with safety officials, but it's the truth. I'm not going anywhere. This is home and i'm staying.

You know, I do not want to leave either. I want to be there to assess the damage and start covering it up or moving what I can so I do not have that much water damage. I guess I always believe that the roof will stay on.

Jay,
The weather people love hurricane season and promoting FEAR in people.  I have lived on the coast of NC most of my life and have seen the media reporting a few miles from me in what appeared to be "horrible conditions". When in fact, I could walk out the door and see for myself that it was not that bad.  The weather people ride around the area and look for a building that has lost shingles or siding (probably old and in need of repair) and wait for the biggest  gust of wind and then report the "terrible storm conditions".  Yes, hurricanes can be very dangerous and destructive and coastal residents need to be alert and aware of impending weather conditions. But, would the media please just tell it like it is!!

I was spoiled by Katrina because the eye went right over my condo when I lived in Bay Harbor Islands - and it was an incredible experience.  Nothing at all like what hit LA and MS.  Now I want more.  :-)

Well, not a Cat 5 but the normal ones are fine.  I was in bed when Wilma hit and the whole building shook (we were on the top floor), I could hear the elevator clanging in the shaft and the rumbling of the roof being torn off.  I actually pulled the covers up to my ears and went back to sleep.

So like you Jay, I'm here to stay.  No Fear!

We got some heavy - and needed - rain in St Pete, but no hurricane. High tide, but no storm surge.

AMEN Jay, I'm not leaving either.  I'm totally over driving like a mad person trying to get away from weather.  I'm as prepared as I'll ever be and plan to stick it out, come hell or high water.  But I'm fortunate to have a new construction which should hold up pretty well.  Unfortunately others not as well situated as I am will also stick it out and pay a heavy price.  Its kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't here in Florida.

Jay- I just met some prospective clients at an open house today. They just moved to Denver from Miami. While they loved living there, they'd had enough of the hurricanes.

Sounds like most Floridians work to be prepared. That is a good thing. Hopefully this season will be like last years.

Jay, I am not going anywhere either... When and if the next one comes, we can sit together and discuss how many deals we will put together when its done...I dont think the Doom and Gloom will go away for a very long time, but it will fade...

California has earthquakes, the Midwest has Tornado's, both of them come with almost no warning at all, and in lots of cases more people are hurt and die with them. We know days in advance in most cases, and have the time to prepare and load the fridge with Beer.....
