Wow what a day!!! Today is one of my favorites days, a day where I get to load up a plastic plate full of all my 4th of July goodies. However, have you placed much thought in what is actually going on your plate? Here is a quick breakdown of my typical plate and the calories that accompany all those goodies.

Jim's Average BBQ Plate Jim and Maria Hart

  • Hot-dog with all the trimmings = 315 calories
  • Hamburger with all the fixin's = 500 calories
  • Chips = 115 calories
  • Corn on the cob = 59 calories
  • Baked Beans = 140 calories
  • Cole Slaw = 180 Calories
  • Banana Pudding = 115
  • Cup Cake = 170

May I have a drum roll please? So, 1 trip to the family table would equate to 1992 calories. It would take 392 minutes of walking to burn that many calories. Now, will I change my ways??? Most likely not, but I don't normally go back for seconds and I am comfortable with that.

PS. This does not even touch the beverage aspect of the day.

Happy 4th of July!!!!

You say that's just your "average plate," though. One would need at least two plates in order to get an average. So I think I caught you going back for seconds, didn't I?

Jim, there are no calories on holidays...don't you know that?  I had a veggie quesadilla on the grill, chips, and many summer shandy beers...I don't want to know the total!!  Oh, yeah, and a couple cookies!

Maria & Jim --- I agree with Kristin and Ann on this one --- BTW, I enjoyed my day without thinking about the calories -- sounds like ya'll did too.  Have a great week.

I must agree with your commenters. On holidays and special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, there is no calories counted or foods to avoid. If I feel a little guilty, and that is alittle, I watch the portions and leave food on my plate. Glad that was an average for you and you had a great 4th.
